There's just something about Pho that makes me very happy. I ordered my first bowl 25 years ago, and it's been a favorite treat ever since. I've eaten at many of the Vietnamese restaurants in Portland and I have my favorites, but honestly, sometimes convenience is all it takes for me to choose one over another. Pho Gia rates highly for a number of reasons. The restaurant is very centrally located on NE Sandy in between Hollywood and downtown, so it's never very far from the areas I frequent. Pho Gia has a pleasant vibe, is clean, and the waitstaff are generally pleasant. The food is always served very quickly, and I've never been disappointed with my meal. In fact, they have some of the best fresh herbs and garnishes I've ever been served in a Vietnamese restaurant before. Their hot chili oil with fermented soybeans is ridiculously good. I'm not sure if they make it in-house, but I always use it generously when I dine here. Parking can be a bit of a pain. There is a small parking lot around the corner that has 15 spots that are shared with other local businesses, and there are several spots in front of the restaurant on the street. There aren't many Vietnamese restaurants with outdoor seating in Portland, so I really appreciate the picnic tables on the sidewalk. It's a nice convenience when I want to take my dog out to dine with me. Pho Gia sits solidly amongst my Top 10 favorite Vietnamese restaurants in Portland. I stopped in this spot mid afternoon one day. I was the only one there, which could be a bad sign. As far as my experience, this place was phenomenal. The staff were nice and quick to make it all happen. I ordered the veggie Pho and an iced coffee. WOW! I was not disappointed. The coffee was delicious and in a fun glass. My first time here, just saw it driving home and thought a bowl of pho' sounds good!I ordered the special bowl super size with tendon and tripe. The price is $20.00 more than most places but it was very good the garnish plate had really fresh basil and two other types of greens. I've only ordered for delivery, so I've not experienced the ambiance or service, but the delivery never takes very long. I typically get the chicken pho, and my son likes the orange chicken. I've always driven past this place and finally I was able to give them a try today. First off, really great customer service. I was greeted by this sweet lady as I walked in through the doors handed me a menu and within a minute or so I was ready to put in my to go order. There was another gentleman ahead of me that was also waiting for his to go order. I would say the turn around was pretty quick. They got my order out give our take 7-10 minutes. The portion size is pretty generous! Definitely one pho could easily feed two people (as long as you're not like super hungry or anything lol) or plenty of left overs for the next day. The beef is not the most tender but has a good fresh flavor. The tendon, on the other hand is the softest ive ever had! The iced tea is very lightly brewed. I rarely leave reviews except when I'm thoroughly impressed or offended & I NEVER want to hurt someone's business, but in this case I feel health codes are consistently violated. I was excited to take my wife here for banh mi because that's her favorite & the Window decals said sandwiches & seafood in large letters so I was looking forward to that. Upon entering the 100% empty restaurant, the young man greeted us & we went straight to the restrooms to wash our hands & immediately I felt like I was in the restroom at a dive bar metal venue. The toilet has large lumps of drying feces stuck to it that WASN'T FRESH. The wall was covered in tiny dead fruit flies. Several hundred easily. The grimy, crusty garbage can was overflowing & couldn't shut properly. The hot water didn't work & the soap dispenser was empty. I haven't seen a restroom that bad in a long time. When we sat at our table I was looking at the window right next to us & noticing how covered it dripping grime. If the kitchens sanitation & sterilization practices are anything like the rest of the place then you should Definitely be fearful of Food borne illness. I regret not taking pictures.
