Can I get a 2.5? First off let me start by saying that if you dine in, the place is VERY dingy and a little tricky to find. There are no frills here, at all. I cannot speak for the sanitary aspect of this restaurant, but they do serve some pretty tasty vermicelli. I tried the lemongrass chicken vermicelli which had a lot of flavor, and my mom had the grilled pork and egg roll. Both were very good, but the dining space alone makes me question the conditions in the kitchen. Sometimes it's better not to ponder these things. read more

This establishment is close to where I work so I will go there for work lunches from time to time. The service is inconsistent but always friendly. I've had the pho and was Meh about it. The standouts on the menu are the fried pork spring roll which comes out cut into bite sized pieces with lettuce leaves for wrapping around the fried goodness. The other standout is the bun with meatballs. The meatballs are peppery, grilled with a crispy, crunchy outside and delicious. I don't know what they are made from and I do not intend to ask. They can also be acquired in the pho but are best as a grilled appetizer or in the bun. The pho is ok. I would not drive across town for it but if I'm in the neighborhood and want to get my soup on, this is the place I'd go. read more

Pho Hai An is hidden in the corner of a strip center a half-block off of Walzem. I've actually driven by it numerous times without ever noticing its existence - so once again, I am grateful to my fellow Yelpers for alerting me to a business worthy of patronage! The restaurant has a lot going for it: its dining area has a clean, uncluttered look and an abundance of natural light, due to the fact that it occupies a corner niche with windows on two sides; the owners (/employees) are efficient and hospitable; the pho is extremely tasty and very inexpensive. I'm not smitten with the summer rolls, however, which are kind of flavorless and are cut in half - making them rather apt to fall apart while being devoured. Nevertheless, I consider Pho Hai An to be a terrific find; and I'll be back to try out the rest of the menu! read more

This is of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants in San Antonio. Its unassuming but made up for in great food and attentive service and staff. Usually I go for lunch when it is no busy and my food is out almost instantly. The pho is delicious, and the bahn mi is REALLY good-- its bread is nice and toasted and seemingly home made. read more

Hidden Gem! Fantastic authentic Pho. Accidentally stumbled upon this place and I am glad I did. Would post a pic but I couldn't stop eating.

I been looking for Pho spot for a year now in San Antonio. Who would guess the 7th largest city in USA would be so hard to find good Pho. Found this place and I believe my search for PHO is over. This place makes the best Vermicilli and sesame chicken I have ever had. Owners aren't the most outgoing but seem like nice people. If you go enough they remember what you order. Watch out sometimes there has been confusion on the billing ending up getting double charged but we got it fixed. If you like Sesame Chicken, try theirs I promise you will love it! read more

Well, not sure how I would begin to describe our disappointment. The food appears to be OK, but the restaurant looks like it is going through a time like in 2008 where every other business is closed down. It just doesn't appear clean to me (and I have a pretty low expectation for cleanliness for a Vietnamese restaurant). The worst thing about this is the service. The younger server that day has tattoos all over but he appears to be quite nice, but the older man (seems to be the owner as I heard him shouting out orders) is rude, even to customers. He didn't have any patience at all to wait for us to order, and didn't bother asking questions as to what else we want or if we need more water, for instance. We came in with a baby and he didn't offer water for the baby, not to mention a clean plate and chopstick so we can feed the baby with our food. Just water for the two of us, then rushed off before we had a chance to ask for the baby's water. I saw him dropped the menu on the floor (quite sticky) and he picked it right up without cleaning it first and gave it to a waiting customer. Did we come in at lunch time where the restaurant is busy so there is a reason for the rush? Lunch time, yes. Busy, no. read more

I'll start by letting you know that I personally have never felt strongly enough about a dining experience to leave a review. I made an account strictly to warn others about this restaurant, I sure wish I had been warned. The food? Terrible. I have had pho numerous times, and this was by far the worst. We ordered vegetable and chicken pho, and hardly ate any. The chicken was old and over cooked, and the vegetables were clearly rotten. The broccoli was turning black and had a sour taste. Our stomachs are queasy. The staff seemed friendly, but very quiet. Hardly acknowledged we were even there. Didn't approach us but only for our order and to deliver the rotten food. Maybe they were busy, you ask? Nope, just our table of two and one other of four. I should have known it was a bad idea to trust an empty restaurant. The hot tea was good. read more

Decent Vietnamese, but not fantastic. It was very close to the hotel I stayed at on this side of San Antonio, so that was a definite plus not having to get back on the highway after being in a car accident on Saturday, and then having to drive down here on Monday. Portions were good and the price was spot on. I had the goi cuon (fresh springrolls) and a bowl of bun with shrimp and pork. The lettuce in the springrolls was starting to brown, and the pork inside didn't taste very fresh. The sauce served with them was okay, but I would've been fine with some hoisin mixed with sriracha (this is what I do at home, and sometimes add a little bit of chunky peanut butter and some water to help it mix). The bun was a little bit better; the pork was really good and the shrimp came out fried. More of the browning lettuce, and most of the veggies didn't taste all that fresh. One of the things I love about Vietnamese food is how fresh and flavorful it is. This restaurant had decent flavor, but definitely lacked in the freshness department. The restaurant had a lot of business on a Monday at 5:45 pm, and the service was good, even though it looked like the owner was doing everything. Maybe Pho Hai An excels in their namesake, pho. So this place has been on Walzem for quite a while; but because of its obscure location, I had never tried it. But after my go-to Phô spot closed, I decided to try it. Okay, so the place isn't like your typical Ancient Asian Secret decorated Chinese restaurant. There's no red tassels and creepy dragons hanging all over the walls, no funky table cloths, no crazy Asian music blaring out of some sound system. The furniture is a little dated and the box TV in the corner leave a little to be desired in the ambience department. But that leaves the concentration to be about the food. And OMG, the FOOD. Yum. Fast. Hot. Fresh. I've tried several menu items, and I've been more than satisfied every time. The spring rolls are delicious, and two go a LONG way. Made the mistake of ordering four once thinking they were those itty bitty things most Asian cuisine spots carry. The Phô is great, nice broth without the fishy smell like some places. I actually turn my bowl up like a kid with chicken noodle soup. My only gripe is that they can be stingy with the sprouts and cilantro, they try to give only one plate per table, but are more than accommodating if you ask for another. Oh, and did I mention they're friggin cheap? Yeah. Two people can eat til they're full for less than twenty bucks. For that, who cares what the place looks like. read more

I have had pho in so many different states being a military spouse, infact my husband and I would consider ourselves phoking knowledgeable on the subject of good pho. We have yet to find a broth as phenomenal as the one at this little gem hidden in a bleek shopping lot. The owners are friendly, attentive, and know our order everytime without even asking. This restaurant is close to my work, so I finally made it over for lunch the other day, on the insistence of a colleague who was craving pho. I went with the bun, which was pretty decent. The pork was well cooked and the serving generous, although I was a bit puzzled by the large amounts of shredded lettuce in the bowl. The best think we had though was the pork spring rolls. They are fantastic, crispy and cut into little pieces with lettuce to wrap them in. I'd like to try the pho sometime, and will probably be back due to proximity to work. Unless you are in the area though, I'd recommend finding somewhere better as there is better pho to be had in San Antonio. read more

in the next chapter of our pho quest my son and I had to try this place. Firstly the place at dinner time was so dark we actually thought it closed. It wasn't just creepy. The soup itself was OK but nothing spectacular but did fill all the requirements of pho. The menu also was not adventurous but kept to the basics such as the summer rolls which were pretty good. The staff was polite but English was severely lacking so work on your point and nod skills. To recap: Nothing ventured nothing gained. Tried the Shrimp Pad Thai today. The taste was very unique and much sweeter than what I am used to. However, the most attractive quality were the portions that were served. Normal human size portions instead of the obiece incentivizing amounts normally found in restaurants in San Antonio (Charles Barkley). Pho was delicious. Food came out fast. Keep in mind, this review is based off of my general perception and experiences of mom and pop Vietnamese shops. This is not a date night restaurant but definitely a comfort food spot for lunch or dinner! My husband and just moved to SA from Boston and we're looking for delicious pho. It was great! Simple, savory, and also good portions. Saw some general options there like every Vietnamese restaurants like rice dishes and other types of soup+stir fry noodles. Owner was friendly and prompt. We went when no one but one other table was there at an off peak lunch time so service and food was definitely fast. :) has a good conversation and Vietnamese about our travels. Generally well kept, but the cleanest it can be in that building. Very quaint and in an obscure area-would have never found it though if I wasn't looking! I really like this place. I've brought 3 sets of diners here, and all of us have had great experiences. I'm pretty standard in my order--always get the chicken pho (#13)--and the meat is good, nicely cooked, and the broth is always tasty. I go here at least twice a month, and I've never been disappointed. I know it's not a glamorous looking place. You won't get a lot on atmosphere here, but for me that's part of the charm. read more
