I LOVE THIS PLACE. Best most authentic pho in the Ann Arbor area. I always get the Pho Tai or the Mi Xao Thap Cam. The Mi Xao Thap Cam has fresh seafood in it, including squid and shrimp, very high quality. My Ma and I have been going here for years and it's a family-owned/run place and it has a very clean and pleasant atmosphere. This is my second time at Pho House, and I came with four other people. There weren't many people around, so service shouldn't have been issue. However, there was still a 15-20 minute wait for food. The waiter had to come back a few times to get our orders because my friends weren't sure as to what to get, but after he delivered our food, he never came back to check on us. I got a #10, which is a beef pho with flank, tripe, and tendon. It is a "small" bowl for $8, so pretty good price for the amount they give you. However, there were some things I had issues with. There weren't a lot of flank in my bowl of pho (maybe 4?) and 1 piece of tendon that was cube shaped. The pho broth was passable, but it just tasted a bit too salty with a lot of MSG. The noodles were pretty good quality. Overall, the pho wasn't too bad and they give a lot of beansprouts and onions. There wasn't a lot of green onions or cilantro like I'm used to in other places, but that's okay. I think this place is pretty good price range for pho. I definitely think it's one of the better ones because, in my opinion, pho is determined by how good the broth is. The broth, as stated, was better than average but lacks flavor in a sense. Probably one of the most affordable place to eat in this area! Love the pho soup and the garden rolls(#3 on the menu)! The vermicelli salad is also delicious! I typically get the beef pho soup or the grilled pork vermicelli salad. Their house made fish sauce is really delicious and goes super well with the vermicelli. Overall quite a good Dining experience. The service is great as well. Food comes out pretty quickly. Great pho place in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area! The inside of the restaurant looks, smells, and feels like your typical pho joint (in a good way), and the staff is friendly and accommodating. Along with ordering our own pho, we shared a $8 Grilled Pork Banh Mi (large), consisting of homemade mayo, pate, pickled strips of carrots and daikon, onions, cucumbers, cilantros, and jalapeño peppers. They are not lying when they mean large, and a full large banh mi could easily satisfy one person for lunch. I ordered the $8 Pho Tai (small #9), which only comes with rare beef flank since that's my favorite type of meat to eat with pho and I can go without the other types. I had just watched Buzzfeed's Worth It episode on pho, so I knew that the best way to start off the meal was to take a sip of broth, and it was so hearty and fragrant! The noodles and meat were good as well, and even though it was a small (tbh not that small!) order, they were generous with the portions (my Worth It Winner of the day). I recommend that if you only want to come here for the pho, get a large pho so you can really enjoy some pho that hits the spot! I'd give Pho House a 3.5/5 since the food is DELICIOUS but the service, TERRIBLE. Whenever I want pho or banh mi, I would come to Pho House cause it helps with both my cravings. Whenever I order, the lady would give me an attitude. She asked if we were ready to order but we said we needed another minutes. She turned around and was about to walk away but I asked her for a straw. She turned around to face me and put her hand up "stop". That was pretty rude. She walked over to another table to help them. I was surprised. Why would she do that? She could've said "give me a minute". She then came back with the straw and asked with an attitude, "ready?". I knew what I wanted - I always get a small pho cause there's always so much noodles which fill me up and there's also so much meat. Literally it was amazing. I only come back to Pho House for the food. I decided to go back recently and this time my boyfriend and I was ready to order. The moment we got our water, we told the server we were ready to order. She came back with my Pho and they gave me half the portion of noodles and 1/3 the amount of meat. I was highly disappointed. It's been awhile since I came back so I thought maybe they changed the amount they put in? I wasn't sure. However, my boyfriend was still eating his. He always finished before me. He said he had a lot of noodles and meat. So I was annoyed since I got hardly anything. We also ordered the cold meat banh mi. Super delicious. As we checked out, the cashier rung us up for $8 per bowl of pho and then $10 for the banh mi. I was confused cause on the menu it said $7.5 or so. She took my boyfriend's credit card and charged it. Pho House is usually my go-to place for pho in Ann Arbor. It satisfies my craving, and I honestly can't tell the difference between good pho and great pho... So the food that they offer here is fine for me. Two things though: (1) the price is a bit high for a bowl of pho. I think that it could be a dollar or two cheaper. It makes sense to me because there aren't a ton of pho restaurants in the area, but I'd definitely go here more often if it was a bit cheaper. (2) It's not very clean. They could really step it up here. Sometimes there's a weird smell in the restaurant, kind of like a dirty wet towel. The service is pretty good, which makes for a better dining experience. Broth is nothing to really brag about but all the veggies are fresh. The inside of the place is not very clean at all, dirty floor, bar counter looks like it's a junky storage shelf and wall are not very clean. The counter has about a 1/2" of dirt/dust and the floor is nasty.I sometime question how clean the kitchen is if the main eating area is not. Every time I come here I tell myself I'm not coming back. I have eaten here four times, and the experience just keep getting better. My favorite dish is pho tai, the noodle soup with rare steak. The flavor of the soup keep drawing me here, besides the fact that it is very close to my workplace. My favorite place remains Vkitchen in Ann Arbor, with their pho exceeding this place in flavor. Nevertheless, this is my second choice for pho. Other dishes I like include the rice dish with pork chop and Vietnamese sausage, as well as beef with fried rice. UPDATE: now Pho House is my favorite pho place! pho is hot and flavorful, and the soup is so good. Can I tell you how happy I am to have decent Vietnamese food closer to me than Madison Heights? It's a delightful thing. Now I would not say this place compares to the greatness of the east side deliciousness but frankly I don't care, it means I can have Vietnamese more often and that to me is worth any nitpicking I may do. The pho is decent, not magic but pretty happy, definitely better than anything else I've tried in this neck of the woods. Better yet is the banh mi, yep David is correct, get the large. I also quite liked the spring rolls. Things can be a bit oily here and there but luckily I am not overly sensitive to it, my arteries bear sad witness to this fact. People here are much friendlier than on the east side and I like the atmosphere with the open kitchen and roominess. They have not been open too long and I think they will continue to improve. The #27 was good as well - crunchy spring rolls and tasty grilled pork. Portion sizes for both were HUGE. They give you a ton of vermicelli noodles - great for those carb-lovers out there. Tried out their bubble tea as well, having seen other yelp reviews. The honeydew bubble tea smoothie base was awesome, but the bubbles themselves didn't seem entirely cooked through. Same with the jasmine tea (which was mediocre). One star off because the service was a little iffy. Food came fast but they seemed to be understaffed. Lighting was a bit dim as well. With this being the only pho place in the area, I think they are doing a darn good job. They are still in their "soft opening" phase so give them a second to adjust before being too harsh. Soo, for example, if you say you'll give them 3.5 stars please round to 4 for that reason. (And also because halves are rounded up any other time in your life. Well, at least they should be.) ;) I found everything to be very light and fresh, not heavy at all. The pho broth itself needed a little more depth of flavor, but I am certain that will perfect after time. I requested my meat on the side, simply because I like mine more rare. I thought it was very cool that they offer VEGETARIAN broth! The fresh rolls were the perfect texture. I wish they had a bit more meat but they were light and delightful. The sauce was thicker than I am used to, but in a good way. One of the reasons I am giving this 5 stars because they were SLAMMED when we went, and this was before their actual grand opening. And as far as I understood, this is the owner's first attempt at running his own place. His sister was helping out (basically manning the place like a total boss) without expecting the crazy amount of customers, so props to them for maintaining friendly customer service and handling everything else! I anticipate going back when in the area for as long as this place is open. I sincerely hope the food is great enough to keep people coming back and not crumble like previous restaurant businesses in this joint have. (I honestly trust that it will work out with the demand for this type of food and absolutely no supply saturating in the A2/Ypsi area.) Too bad Pho House wasn't around when I went to school over there. But it's now another reason to visit the area more often. Oh! Here's a silly little fact for you! I don't really want to leave this review. Why? Because I'm so excited that there is a new Vietnamese restaurant in town that actually specializes in pho, but I wasn't impressed. The vegetarian selection is decent. TWO vegetarians were in my group of five and were able to order plenty of food. The pho was good. Not the best I've had or anywhere near the best, though. It was a tad saltier than I expected (without adding Sriracha or hoisin sauce) and a tiny bit oily, which affected the texture of everything as I ate. The broth was slightly green (?) right when my bowl was brought out, and it honestly reminded me of... the broth for hu tieu Nam Vang. I'm not saying they're making it wrong--just that their style of pho broth is not what I'm used to and prefer. It is still good. But it's not good enough for me to drive all the way to Ypsi when I have a pho craving. So while I'll probably return with some other friends who haven't yet been and want a token Vietnamese friend to tag along, I won't go out of my way to eat here. Dalat is still my favorite Viet restaurant in the area; Saigon Garden is still the most conveniently located and where I'll probably go to get my pho fix. They are still working out the kinks, so service is kind of "meh" but still very friendly. (A friend ordered fried tofu banh mi, which never arrived but appeared on our check anyway. The feel of the restaurant was very authentic from the moment we walked in. The tables were laden with plenty of sauces for the spicy and non-spicy foodies alike. The interior of the restaurant had a "green house feel" to it, as there was lots of greenery and the lighting came mostly from the windows. I've been on a pho binge lately and decided that I wanted to have something besides Ginger Deli (in downtown Ann Arbor). Also, I've been reintroduced to eating meat after being vegetarian for several years, so big moves here getting something with a lot of meat. I ordered the Pho Dac Biet. It comes with a ton of beef, in a good way. It was to the point where the noodles to beef ratio was like 1:2. The broth was a little more bland than what I am used to having with pho. They offer a bunch of sauces on the table so you can flavor your soup however you want. I also ordered the Crispy Pork Spring Rolls (I forget the actual name of them). They were good as well with a good balance of pork and vegetables inside of the rolls. I'm not sure what the dipping sauce was, but it complemented the spring rolls well. I'd give pho house like a 3.75/5. The service was decent, maybe because I got a good server, and the food was too and cheap. I got the large pho because I eat a lot and my friend got a small. And I was kind of disappointed on how little meat there was. We had about the same amount of meat. I just had more noodles and broth. To me, it wasn't worth the extra two dollars if I was going to get more noodles. I love cilantro, but I was pretty disappointed by the amount of cilantro there was. I wish there was more. Also, to me, the broth tasted kind of sweet to me. To me, pho gotta be refreshing, not sweet. But overall, despite it's minor flaws, the pho was good. I have arrived at the restaurant at 6:00PM and it wasn't too busy. There were a few tables open. I was pretty excited to try Vietnamese food here since it seems pretty traditional for Ann Arbor. The guy told us that it'll take 10 minutes to seat and serve us. 5 minutes later, 2 tables were empty but nobody was there to clean it up. 20 minutes later, we were still not seated. A party of 3 came in and the same guy told them that it'll take them 45 minutes to serve them. At this point, at least 5 tables were empty but we're filled with dirty dishes. We left because (1) we couldn't wait an additional 45 minutes for food and (2) we have not been seated even though tables were empty... I was really excited to learn that there will be a new Vietnamese restaurant in town especially since the selection in Ann Arbor area is pretty dingy. I constantly yearn for the smell of the comforting beef broth or a nice hearty plate of rice and porkchops, which I would normally get my fix of when returning home to Chicago. After hearing so many good things on yelp about Pho House, we decided to give it a try and was not disappointed. The menu selection was not as extensive as some other Vietnamese places I'm use to, but most of the staples are available, so no complaints. The pho is flavorful and the sizes are generous. I opted for a #39, which was the rice plate and pork chops with a fried egg, Chinese sausage, Vietnamese sausage, and egg "cake." They ran out of egg cake that night, so the waitress kindly offered to give me more of something else and I chose the Vietnamese sausage. My mind was blown by the amount of food that arrived on that plate. There were two sizable slabs of marinaded grilled pork chops on top of all the other said ingredients. UNHEARD OF. I was stuffed silly. The store itself is a little difficult to spot if you weren't specifically looking for it. The Fat Phllly Burger signs that use to occupy the same space still stand, so hopefully that will be changed soon. I hear that the space has been occupied by a number of unsuccessful businesses as of late, so I really hope that Pho House is here to stay! 3 1/2 stars! What I take issue with across the board is the overwhelming greasy nature of all the dishes (especially for it being Vietnamese!). While the pho broth was good with some layered flavors, there was a shiny skin of oil on the surface. I've never had such heavy pho before. The beef brisket was definitely fully cooked, far past the point of tenderness, and the meatball was a little rubbery. It was good but not great. The 'spring rolls' (the fried kind) were translucent with oil which is too bad because the filling was promising (pork and scallions and things?). The "grilled shrimp" appetizer is actually fried shrimp paste. I should've read the Vietnamese name because I expected something WHOLLY different based on the English description. I was not crazy about it but it was made from scratch which was nice. Finally we had the pork, egg, and sausage combo. Everything was SO HEAVY, though the sausages were tasty. I did not like the flavor of the pork chop - was a little too sour and funky. So far the food is three stars. I liked the atmosphere and the service was very friendly. I hope the oil is toned down and the flavors pop a little more. Then I'll be a loyal fan hands down. read more

There are so many places to grab good food in between Ypsilanti and Ann Arbor. Pho House is one of those places to stop in for a cheap and quick meal! It serves traditional Vietnamese options like Bahn mi (sandwiches), Bun (vermicelli dishes), rice entrees, and of course pho. Their pho is very affordable ($8 for small, $10 for large), and very good! The broth his so flavorful, yet not too salty. They don't skimp on the portion sizes of the meat/filling that comes with it. As with most pho places, the food comes out very fast, which is just what we needed after coming back to Ann Arbor from a long road trip. The interior is spacious and kind of clean, though the whole restaurant looks pretty old and run down. There was only one waitress working when we came in, but she was still quick and polite! Especially because it is solely based on Vietnamese food which is where Pho originates. Tomukun Noodle Bar in downtown Ann Arbor has Pho as well, although Tomukun looks more modern and has more of a variety of food, it is: 1- more expensive than Pho House 2-not as authentic and rich tasting as Pho House 3- I got sick 2/3 times from the Pho at Tomukun. What can I say that has not been said??? Well this family has owned/operated a few restaurants in the Ann Arbor area. My favorite was Bahn Na, which was down the road, now a "Roma Bakery." In any event, hands down best phone around. I have tried Dalat, and they do not even come close. I have tried almost everything on the menu, but #7 is my favorite and there is a great sweet and sour soup on the back of the menu. Friendly staff, but if it is busy there is only one waitress.
