First time at a pho restaurant! My fiancé brought me here for lunch since I've never had pho before and we had an amazing time! The restaurant was pretty empty when we went early in the afternoon, so our wait time was pretty short for our meal. Naturally it was quiet, but it felt a little busier with all the televisions on the walls with different things playing across them all. They weren't at full volume, but it was still enough to be a little distracting. TVs aside, the staff was incredibly polite, the restaurant clean, including the restrooms, and the food was delicious. I ordered the Vermicelli Noodles with Grilled Shrimp, Pork, and an Egg Roll. As it was my first time trying pho I didn't realize the Vermicelli Noodles would be 'dry,' and while I was initially disappointed at my own error, I was still very happy with my meal. The noodles themselves were very soft and held the flavors of the other parts of the meal really well, the plump Shrimp and the copious amount of Pork seasoned with a sweet tanginess, and the crispy Egg Roll packed with yummy goodness. The bowl was so big that I had ample leftovers! My fiancé shared some of his pho with me, so I did get to try a bowl with broth and it was super tasty as well! I absolutely love ordering from this place. The pho broth is so good. I even have to order myself an extra pint to go. Yes you can do that. You can order more pho broth just for home when you want a second portion. The fresh summer rolls so good so big and the peanut sauce I think is the best in town. We stopped coming here for years because of a very unpleasant experience with a lady cashier who had extremely poor customer service--bad as in BAD. She was rude, dismissive, and honestly a total embarrassment to what is otherwise a great Vietnamese restaurant. Because of that we totally avoided this place for a long time. Thanks to our recent visits to Teso Life nearby (otherwise we probably wouldn't have), we finally decided to give Pho Hung Chong another chance after many years. I'm happy to say it was worth it. The food is still as good as we remembered. Everything we ordered was delicious and satisfying. My cousin, aunt, and uncle shared the Banh Cuon, and the portion was so generous they even took leftovers home. We also ordered Lemon Fish, Corn Soup, Pho Dac Biet, and Com Ga Roti--all flavorful, filling and comforting. What really stood out this time was the service. The servers and waitstaff were warm, welcoming, attentive, and genuinely happy to serve us. The difference was night and day compared to our past experience. Since we stopped dining at Pho Win nearby for bad customer service experience, coming back to Pho Hung Chong will definitely be a regular thing for us whenever we're craving Pho of other Vietnamese favorites. We were craving pho and went with a friend who brought us to Her favorite Pho place. We ordered the Special Pho and the vermicelli with pork and egg rolls. Both were good, solid dishes and the service was friendly. One thing that stood out was the menu pricing. Items were priced at amounts like $17.05, $16.78, and $17.88 instead of the usual rounded numbers. Maybe it means they're trying to keep prices lower rather than simply rounding everything up. A decent low key Vietnamese restaurant my sister and cousin took me too. Probably the only issue not with me but with my cousin was that she ordered a pho with a different type of noodle she used egg noodle instead of vermicelli noodle which is traditional. Service was pretty decent with that only mistake regards to my cousin's order of pho soup. Ambience was pretty traditional if not typical for most Vietnamese restaurants with that modern TV in a plaza. This is one of my favorite Pho places to go on any given day. The service is always ready seat you take your order or refill your drinks. The food has a wide variety of dishes from Ala carte family style to individual plates and many soup different choices. The atmosphere is welcome several different televisions going on with no volume, a low slow music with good lighting. Overall friendly service and good taste of food. My family and I have been eating at this establishment since it opened. Typically their food is good, service is normally fast and friendly. I can't say that about my last couple of visits. Recently I dined in and ordered Togo. The female waitress is not friendly, acts like eating at the restaurant is wasting her time. The gentleman who took my Togo order this evening saw me standing inline looked at me and then Proceeded to ask a gentleman standing behind me if he would like to order. The gentleman waiting in line to order was nice enough to point out that I was there before him. The male server was not very pleasant when taking my order, then gave the gentleman his order before mine. I don't mind waiting, I don't like feeling as my business doesn't matter because I'm female. Ordered- F2 broccoli chicken F21 lemon fish and F9 moo goo Food was decent- fresh variety of vegetables and rice made well. Good quantity since no lunch portion. Chicken was rubbery. Fried fish lacked flavor. Service was good - waitress friendly. The Bill mischarged- deceptively overcharged - so I won't be returning and I noticed this for any patron will experience this. Bill presented as "total without detail", just prompts for adding tip amount. Upon requesting a detail receipt I see the discrepancy. Notes: 1. Menu and prices not match. Menu first page appetizer page - has a small white label posting "all items add $1 more". So all menu items up charge $1- throughout menu. A little sneaky - recommend that label be added to every page if not each section. 2. Actual bill then overcharges each item added more than the $1 stated. For example F1 broccoli chicken $12.50 was charged $13.87 before taxes. See my bill photo. Wish I had taken a picture of the menu. Not worth going back to do it. Totally understand costs increase- take the time to revise existing menus, get them reproduced or at a minimum charge what you actually state you do. This used to be my favorite pho restaurant. Half of my winters are spent there! Until this last time... the broth is a bit different... not as flavorful as it used to be. Which made me sad... I hope it was just an off day! I have eaten so many things from frog legs to many unusual Vietnamese dishes... The service is always quick and on point! Wow so sad this place has taken such a downturn!!! I stopped by yesterday for their beef stew pho with egg noodles and let me say: sad day. The aromatic flavors were just not there. Gone were the ginger, cinnamon and earthy tones that made the broth previously something I'd travel across town for. I also got the summer rolls with beef. Filler with nothing but inedible gristle. They should really just not be serving food ATP. The service was also terrible. Used to be a great place 3-4 years ago, not sure what happened but won't be back. Paid $30 for inedible food. First time having the grilled meat in my pho and it's my new favorite. The broth is delicious and they didn't miss on any of the add ins. Must try! The combination fried rice is delicious too. First time here and it did not disappoint! We were treated so nicely as we enter the restaurant. We ordered the fresh spring rolls, fried egg rolls, and steamed bun as an appetizer. The main entree was (2) orders of the Pho special it has brisket, tendon, meatball and tripe. In addition, we ordered a grilled pho (basically has pho broth and noodles and the grilled beef as the protein on the side). The broth was good just a bit under seasoned for me and a little more on the greaser side than what I typically like. Either way, it satisfied my Pho craving! This is legitimately one of the weirdest places I've ever been. And strangely enough, I want to go back because I know I'm bound to experience something cray. I don't know how to truly articulate all of this, so here are my thoughts: :: The initial draw for me was the name (#1), which is atypical and if anything, somewhat prominent. Also the fact it's perched upon a hill in a standalone building and hard to miss from the highway. It's like its own billboard. :: Supposedly the place is Chinese-Vietnamese, yet no one speaks Chinese (#2). The pricey'ish menu understandably leans more toward Viet, but the Chinese items are mainly American-Chinese dishes (#3) to attract diners who don't know any better. :: The food is not inedible, but it's not particularly great either. I've never had pho served in such a square bowl before and I've also never had thit nuong with it. The latter was sweeter than I'm used to. Cha gio is definitely of the tau variety with the crinkly skin and a bit pricey at nearly $7 for one (big'ish) roll. The beef & broccoli is pretty mediocre but the com tam rice plate was probably the most passable thing I tried. :: Service is a bit of a hot mess. I realize it's family owned / operated but there was a lot of cluelessness with the staff and the pace really needs some picking up. If the food were not so up to par, the service would be the biggest downer. :: Super random bit: They have pies for sale ($13) near the entrance. I realize this is also a bakery, but Vietnamese food and whipped pies, cheesecakes and donuts? Okay. :: More randomness: There's a stage just behind the pie stand. An actual stage for live music, performing acts, etc. For now, there's the owner and his computer desk, which may seem somewhat awkward at first, but is kind of amazing at the same time. :: The most random bit: There are back rooms that are hidden from the main dining area. I figured it was a bar since I saw a ton of older dudes back there drinking (and playing poker?) but there's also a bar out front. The real kicker was these scantily clad females going in and out of the place. I'm not suggesting anything illegal is happening but it definitely looked tad shady. (#4) With so many cars in the parking lot but a near empty restaurant (dining side) suddenly all made sense. __________ (#1) Hung Cuong as in "Mighty" or "Powerful" or "Formidable" (#2) Typical in Texas. I was visiting family in San Antonio when I decided to stop by (per my aunt's recommendation) because I was craving some Viet foods. Walking in, it seemed like a typical Vietnamese casual/small restaurant. The menu also seemed pretty typical for the most part. I noticed that many reviews complained about the service here, but I had no problems with the service at all. Maybe it was because we were here during off hours (early afternoon), but our server was pretty nice and helpful. There weren't many customers at the time that we went. I was just glad to finally eat some decent tasting foods after being so disappointed with so many food places around San Antonio (really can't beat foods in Houston though). I grew up eating these foods, and I thought they tasted pretty good, and the portion sizes were pretty decent for the prices too. I got the pho dac biet (that I forgot to take a pic of) and the bun tom thit nuong cha gio (grilled shrimp, grilled pork & egg roll rice vermicelli bowl). The pho broth was clear and flavorful, and it came with a very generous amount of meats and good portion of pho noodles. The vermicelli bowl was also packed. I especially loves the grilled pork and shrimps; they were perfectly seasoned and not dry. It came with 1 egg roll, which was bigger than the typical egg roll you'd find at a lot of Viet restaurants, and it was crispy and flavorful as well. I actually had to order some egg rolls to-go to eat on the road back to Houston. Overall I'll definitely be back here next time I visit San Antonio again to try their other dishes. If you're from Houston, don't expect the foods here to be as good as there, but this was definitely one of the better places I've tried here in San Antonio. read more

The service is usually great & with only three tables occupied, the wait staff spent more time on take out orders than us. Went here for lunch with my girls and the food delicious..it was. I was not a fan of the strawberry smoothie..tasted like strawberry milk.. We got sat down right away. No one was there.. The server was a little rude.. the atmosphere was just off. They had random things inside like a bakery but no bakery items .. bar but very old looking and no bar items ...They get very busy because I guess they have poker nights but maybe that ties in with how the place was taken care of. Whew--this was one wild ride of a dining experience, and not in a good way. My Pad Thai had a smell that could only be described as "should not be consumed by humans," so I tapped out after a couple of cautious bites. My daughter, braver (or hungrier) than I, ate her meal and ended up battling what we suspect was food poisoning. The ambiance didn't help much either--grimy walls, and a general "abandoned set of a horror movie" vibe. We came for noodles and good vibes, but left with regrets and hand sanitizer. Pho Hung Cuong still hits the spot for my pho or vermicelli craving. While they have other dishes, I always order one of these two noodle options. I think in the past year, they added banh mi sandwiches, which I love. We used to get the summer rolls as our appetizers, yet this is better. I do wish it had more of that butter-mayo cream on the bread, yet it has the flavor I'm looking for otherwise. We order just one, have them slice it in half, and they are happy to accommodate our request. It's also become one of the few Asian places I can take my child to because they serve kid-friend food that my child will actually eat. This is my favorite place to get Pho. Out of all the restaurants I have tried, I think their broth is the most flavorful. I usually get the "#33" which is the pho noodle soup with grilled pork slices. This is the only place I've found so far that will offer grilled pork slices in pho. The vermicelli noodle bowls are very good as well. There are also Chinese cuisine dishes on the menu. Have not tried any of them, but they're the standard dishes you find at any Chinese food restaurant in town. The service is fast, friendly, but after you receive your food you probably will not see your server again. This is a very casual restaurant and I noticed many people order to-go. If you're hankering for pho in San Antonio, this place is the closest purveyor to the university at seven minutes away. The interior is a dated Asian feel from the 1980s, which isn't all bad as it's pretty typical even in Asia. They have an assortment of flatscreen TVs showing international cooking, dramas, and sports, all muted. They take care of you here with diligence. As I've lived in Seattle much of my life, I've been to a LOT of pho restaurants and this place is a solid place to eat. The pho options are HUGE so bring your appetite. And their spring rolls are the traditional unfriendly rolls with yummy peanut sauce. The menu has many other Vietnamese dishes that I look forward to having in the future, so they have much more than just Pho. read more

The moment we walked in the server seemed annoyed. We sat down and another server came over to take our order and he tapped on our menu several times as if rushing us saying "do you know what you want yet?" And we literally just sat down. He never checked on us to refill waters. Then when it was time to pay he held out his hand for the card and wiggled his fingers without saying anything or providing us the receipt. When ordering, I ordered Thai tea with boba not knowing they didn't have boba but instead of telling me. They brought me the tea which is fine but at least tell the customer what they are going to get. I ordered pho ga and the pho was oily and hard to eat. The chicken was undercooked and I didn't complain to the staff but it's hard to support a business who doesn't accommodate the customer. Growing up eating Vietnamese food in Houston all my life, I am glad to find a good Pho place in San Antonio that has good flavors and a big menu full of other Vietnamese dishes. My boyfriend and I got 2 #23's which had everything in it, 2 thai teas with whip cream, and 1 pork Banh Mi to share. Unlike most pho places, they only have one size for pho. The portion is really big! And the broth was good and flavorful too. There was also a good amount of meat in it as well. The banh mi really stood out to me! The bread was served toasted, a bit crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The grilled pork and slaw inside compliments each other perfectly. The Thai teas were ok. It's more sweet milk than tea in my opinion. It was good, but not authentic. Of course, compared to Houston, the prices are higher but I know their prices are normal for San Antonio. I think this place has solid food quality. If I crave Vietnamese food again I'll come back to try their other dishes. read more

Prices have gone up substantially in recent years. Food is still good but it has become prohibitively expensive for lunch compared to other options, like $30 for egg rolls and pho for one after an appropriate tip. They also inherited the very dated Marie Callender's 1980's tall booths from the other (now-closed) location during the covid craziness and they don't fit in the space. I wish they would just get rid of those things and open up the space again. Their egg rolls are incredible though so I will periodically bite the proverbial bullet and pay the price. read more
