Our favourite Vietnamese restaurant closed in Eastwood a few years back and as Cabramatta is bit of a drive away we have been on the lookout for a new local favourite. I still crave the Vietnamese style Spaghetti and Meatballs that I became addicted to at the other place but I was going to keep an open mind. We do enjoy the Crispy Chicken at Tan Viet, but why wait in line at lunch time with so many options available on both sections of Rowe Street. To be honest the food we had here was good but nothing to jump up and down about like the aforementioned Spaghetti. We kept it safe and ordered things that we know and it was very tasty and generous. We started with crispy Spring Rolls and I had Chicken Pho. My wife order the Vietnamese Vermicelli Salad with Crispy Pork Chop. The broth on the Pho was fantastic and flavoured the rest of the soup beautifully. The salad was generous and I though there was no way my wife would finish it but she did because it was tasty and fresh. I have had better spring rolls but they were passable. We will go back because I want to try the Beef Pho and maybe it will knock our socks off!

But my wife tried the Pho one of her excellent dishes and whilst it is not as good as hers, the food is good and prices okay. Today I found out they're a small Vietnamese restaurant serving pho, tomato rice and Vietnamese noodle salad. I ordered the beef pho, the stock was good but a touch bland. There were essences of richness coming through the broth but perhaps a little more salt or soy or an even longer broil and this dish would've been amazing. I love the beef served rare just as it should, cooking to perfection in the hot broth. It was a generous and hearty bowl of soup and the service was quick and polite.

When I walked into Pho Sam and I was hit with a palpable wave of indifference, I knew it was winner winner crispy skin chicken with tomato rice dinner. Which was delicious. By the way. Of course to accurately judge a Vietnamese restaurant I had to try the raw beef pho. It was very good. They must have read previous reviews because they now give you all the trimmings as standard. Well most of the trimmings. Owing to my gingerness I had to request chilli. Bill got salty fish and chicken rice (oh so nice) and a chicken laksa (ok but there's better nearby). Pho Sam is a pretty casual affair. You're there for the food not the atmosphere. Get in, eat, get out, repeat. We did go back again tonight for takeaway. We got more of the same plus Sichuan Beef. My brother reckons that wasn't very good. He's a guts and he didn't finish it. The lemon chilli chicken wings are not bad. Verdict: delicious Vietnamese but stick to the Vietnamese options on the menu.

Servings are bigger than your face with some like the Nasi Goreng just seem endless. Just like any good Asian restaurant, the service is brusque but efficient. The owner is an unsmiling lady with a fierce bob. She may seem scary at first but deep down she's a real softie, known to slide a free plate of spring rolls or a glass of red bean ice onto the tables of her regulars. Because in the end, it's all about good food at good prices.

The menu is extensive and very reasonably priced. I had a seafood satay noodle soup which was not only a feast for my eyes but it was beyond delicious and so comforting for a cool night. The staff were accommodating and attentive. The food arrived at our table within 10 minutes and I would happily recommend this restaurant to anyone. We'll be back.

If I knew that I would never have this dish again I would have eaten it everyday until I was sick. My advice is to learn how to make your favourite dish before it could be gone. The onsen eggs on toast and salmon was okay, but tasted a bit too ordinary. I saw both the ex Masterchef contestants hard at work. I liked seeing that they were personally behind the food and care about delivering quality food to customers. Too often these days, a celebrity chef will leave the restaurant to run itself.

The salmon is out of this world - super tender but with a lovely charred surface. My money's on sous vide then blow torched. The accompanying spinach is a curious ball of umami and the onsen eggs have me leave poached eggs behind in the dust. The pho is incredibly rich yet delicate and the black sesame shake is grey like concrete, just the way black sesame anything should be. Despite not being a follower of My Kitchen Rules, I somehow still know of Shanelle and Uel. It's a delight to see them hard at work in the kitchen when we visit and even more so when we see them truly embodying their name, bantering with their staff and checking in to make sure they've eaten. It is clear that the food here is made with love. Kin, try as you may to keep me away with your terrible parking, puns and queues, but I will be back for the rest of the menu!
