I was thoroughly impressed with Pho Saigon. Met up with Meg T on a chilly and rainy evening here a few weeks ago. The weather was perfect for pho and this was a place that had come recommended to us. The atmosphere is casual and inviting. We sat down and decided on what we were going to order. I went for the #40 (PH GÀ THT TRÁNG) and she went for the #59 (BÚN BÒ NNG CH GIÒ). The food came out quickly and in heaping portions. We ended up splitting and sharing each other's choices. The pho was flavorful and had a nice balance of noodles and chicken in it. The vermicelli was a bit dry as we weren't sure we liked the sauce that came with it or the other sauces at the table, but the egg roll and meat had amazing flavor. Poor customer service, the waiter kept touching my menu and didn't even fully explain the dishes to us. My soup had some piece of plastic in it and considering the other reviews that I've read there was probably more things like that inside of it. The places hygiene is extremely horrible the walls were grey with dirt and the floor is sticky all over and I even heard a lady working in the back who was coughing. My beef had mostly fat and it was yellow? Is fat even supposed to be yellow? The soup felt like it had been chilling in the heater all day long. The home page of their website says "delicious, fast, affordable". They definitely got that right. I imagine Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City as it was renamed in 1975 to be a bustling place and maybe someday I will be able to visit. Wikipedia says that it is the largest metropolitan area in Vietnam with more than 9 million people. This restaurant is also a bustling place. A friend and I tried it out on Sunday afternoon and people were often seen waiting at the front entryway for several minutes until a table opened up. The food was awesome. Even though most people were there for the Pho, I tried the "Steamed rice with charbroiled sliced pork" and my friend tried the "Steamed rice with charbroiled chicken". We shared the dishes a little and both were excellent as was the Thai iced tea. Maybe when it gets a little cooler outside, I will return to sample the Pho. You can expect a casual, quick dining experience in a nice space in the Chinatown Center on Lamar. Check it out soon, because this may very well be one of the best Pho places in Austin. read more

The pho was excellent as were the pork spring rolls. Also got the thai iced tea which was great as a dessert, though I was so full already. I wish the tendon meat was thicker though as they were very thin slices to the point I couldn't really find them in the soup lol. The regular size soup was more than enough for me and I felt like exploding afterwards. It was very busy when we went but there seemed to be only 1 waiter actively serving the tables so it took multiple attempts to flag down the waiter to take our orders and to ask for other things. Came to eat after riding my bike at Walnut Creek. We did not want to leave our bikes outside (not Walmart bikes) and first they said we could leave them in the front entry. After we sat down they came to tell us we can't leave them here. We eat here frequently. I was disappointed in the customer service. Our bikes were not in anyone's way. These bikes cost several thousand dollars. If you are in the Austin area these kinds of bikes and clients with such a thing is common. My point is the customer service is and was terrible. read more

The best pho place in Austin - that's I've managed to try... and I've tried a lot! They have large bowl options which is nice.. the soup base doesn't taste artificial, but rather, slow cooked. The place is always packed, but if your drinks are running low, they are quick to give you a refill, they definitely try to provide good service. As soon as you finish ordering, your food comes out piping hot minutes later... I'm so sad that this restaurant is many peoples' experience with Vietnamese food in the Austin area. Their pho is a step up from instant noodles, it's very lacking in flavor. Don't even waste your time with the oxtail, you get tiny weird pieces with no meat & it's not cooked long enough to get tender. Their brisket was fine - not great, but on par with average pho joints, only reason they don't get a 1 star. The bun bo hue is abismal - does the cook even know what bun bo hue is??? The broth didn't have any flavors of bun bo hue, and wtf they included some pho brisket meat with it instead of beef shank???!!! Won't be returning, this place is a complete joke. My sister recommended ordering Goi Cuon, it is a fresh spring roll appetizer made with shrimp, pork, vermicelli and fresh vegetable wrapped in thin rice paper, served fresh with peanut sauce. It was heavenly. Then I had Bun Tom Thit Nuong, but we had pork switched with chicken. This is a yummy entre of vermicelli with char broiled sliced meat and shrimps. Amazing. This is a great place for a huge group of people to eat for Sunday lunch. The space is really large and brightly lit, so it sort of makes me feel happy. The food was okay. Not bad at all, just not as good as most places. The service, however, definitely affected the meal. I got chicken pho and pork spring rolls. Both came out so quick that it was like they were bringing them to the table before I arrived. This could be a good thing, but it did mean that the spring roll outside was a little tough from sitting, which wasn't a huge deal, but affected the taste, and also made then stick to the plate, causing them to rip open when I picked them up. The meat was quite flavorful, and I like the peanut sauce. I got the mixed dark/white chicken pho. I have concluded that I will never ever find a bowl of pho as good as I Heart Pho, which closed, so I am just going to stick with vermicelli bowls from now on. The pho was not bad, but there were so many noodles it was hard to find the broth, which is my favorite part. The noodles were cooked a good amount though. There was a lot of chicken skin and gristle, but the meat was pretty good. The service though... I was seated immediately, which is good. I pulled out my camera to take a picture of the menu for my reference, and it was like 3 different waiters were suddenly hovering at the table. When I say hovering, I mean someone immediately came over, and when I said I'd be a few minutes, the next one came over about 30 seconds later, if that. Same thing, and then another one came over a few seconds after that and basically stood at the table until I finally just ordered without looking at the rest of the menu. It was pretty annoying. So then my spring rolls came out immediately, which was okay, but then my soup came out 1 bite into the spring rolls. Not the end of the world, but I appreciate Twin Lions where they subtly keep an eye on you to bring out your food right around when you're finishing your soup. So I get my food, and that's the last time anyone comes. There were around 4 or 5 waiters, but they were really enjoying socializing. There was a table that needed to be cleared the whole time I was there, but they didn't move from their chatting spot. When I needed a container, it took some work to get someone's attention. Not a huge deal, but if I'm going to a sit down restaurant, I do expect the crowd of waiters to maybe come by and check on things. I had been considering picking up a to go for lunch the next day, but was just ready to go. Definitely a huge contrast from Pho Thanh Ni in Cedar Park, whose employees are super attentive and helpful, bagging up my leftovers for me, and even taking the ice out of the water pitcher to refill my no ice water (on their own, not at my request, they just put that much effort in). Made a return visit with the family in tow today. This time, I ordered the bun with grilled pork and egg rolls. It was excellent. Pork was hot and crisply charred. Veges fresh. Husband and son happily shared and finished one #12, pho with beef. Accompanying vege condiment plate looked fresh & appealing. Daughter was enthusiastically scarfing down her sandwich from nearby Baguette House, and tried bits of our food (which she also liked). When my parents came to visit my Mom was craving soup. So what not have Pho? I'm glad I took them here because it was so good. I ordered the Fried tofu Pho, Mom the shrimp pho, and my Dad the pork and rice. I forgot to take the pics but let me tell you it was so good. We ordered a couple of appetizers: the egg rolls and the clear shrimp wrap rolls (forgot what they were called). The egg rolls were okay. I love lumpia better. Although some people may say it's the same thing but I beg to differ. The peanut sauce that came with the clear wrap rolls was my least favorite. I'm not sure if they put fish sauce in it but I'm not a fan. When our food came out we all shared. Except my dad although his food smelled so good. My tofu pho was delicious! Pho Saigon is a trademark name that labels itself as one of the best of its kind in Vietnamese cuisine. Unfortunately, it didn't completely live up to its ego. I had myself the pho dat biet (everything in it), as well as their chicken and pork spring roll. The chicken and pork spring roll was about average of what is normally served in Vietnamese restaurants, noting that the meats are bit on the dry side, although well seasoned and charbroiled for a little smoke-y taste. Enjoyable still but could be better. The pho was on the average side. One thing I've learned that you must do before digging in, is to mix up everything in the bowl to ensure all the ingredients are coated in the broth to allow for the last bit of cooking and giving them seasoning. As far as the taste goes, it was disappointing that the broth fell short as tends to happen if you cook the broth to perfection without considering that adding the other ingredients reduce the flavors entirely. Additionally, the amount of proteins were about average portions but they completely left out of my favorite bits, the tripe. One of my go-to places for Pho in the Austin area. Always a safe bet as well if you're introducing someone to Pho. The service is very casual and fast. I usually get my food within 5 minutes. The broth is very authentic (tons of MSG, haha) and the noodles have a good consistency to them. I'm also very satisfied with portion size for both the noodles and the meats. I always get #17 which has the right combination of meat for my liking. #18 has all the meats. One of the best pho places in Austin. It's in Chinatown, so you know it's authentic. It's also conveniently located next to Bambu if you want dessert/boba and the MT market if you need groceries. Even if you're at the domain and don't want to shell out too much money at their fancy restaurants or aren't in the mood for the asian food there (Thai, Indian, Japanese/ramen), then you can always swing by Pho Saigon. It's only a twelve minute drive. And there usually isn't a wait because pho is a quick meal. You can order almost immediately, and the food follows ten to fifteen minutes afterwards depending on how busy it is. I like to get the dark meat chicken pho here. It's nice that they let you choose between white meat, dark meat, or a combination of them. My husband likes the combination beef pho. They really do have all options, even for vegetarians. If you don't want noodle soup, they of course have stir fry noodles or some kind of rice dish. The spring rolls are good here. They're huge. Although there's not more pork or shrimp, there is more noodles. I personally would rather have less noodles, but I guess you get more bang for your buck this way, especially if you have a big appetite. read more

If you ever go there, don't let the long line fool you, because it's not a long wait unless you're there during weekends! Can't really go wrong here. Good noodles, good juice. It can get busy and/or a little crowded so that can increase wait times. Service is typically above par but I've had a few occasions where it seemed that the server was a bit cursory. Generally this is good soup base, good noodles, with the requisite greens and accoutrements. Pho is good just about in any iteration as well as the Bun, which is one of my personal favorites. Fish sauce is nice and light while still giving you that "oomph" that it should have. Spring rolls and fried rolls are good but I did notice that the holder that held the soup spoons needed a good dusting. Yes go here, yes it won't be expensive, yes visitors are welcome including the uninitiated. In no way is this an overwhelming experience for folks who are first trying this great addition to the food utopia. read more

But let's get back to why you want to eat here...PHO. My God the "regular" size was so full of meat and noodles that I thought I was served the "large," until hubby's vat of deliciousness arrived. I swear there was an entire steak in the bottom of his bowl after he had eaten half of it. The steak was fresh, tender and flavorful (the "lean" was my favorite). However, the broth was not as rich as I would have liked. I have yet to find the ultimate pho, but this was damn good and we will return, if craving pho in north Austin. read more
