Hei Hei Rice Roll is located at the Richmond Public Market, oh wow - this place is really popular, on the 2nd visit I was the first in line then the line wasn't so long but while waiting for our order, the line got super long. I was lucky I didn't wait long in line. Best to arrive early. I am not sure what the secret to the rice roll but Wow, it's so thin, silky, smooth texture with the toppings, so great together. The last 2 times we had rice roll with my daughter at Portland and Seattle- followed per Instagram reels- those did not even compare to these rolls. My first visit I got the combo which is the best deals, starts at $15.50 but depends on what you select for the selection for rice rolls and congee. I got the pork & preserved egg congee, shrimp, mushroom, pork rice roll. The 2nd visit I got the combo again, with liver & preserved egg congee, scallop and shrimp rice rolls, but I got my order wrong for the roll- they missed the shrimp. fyi-I found out that bean sprout, corn, toppings are free! Both combo came out to $17. super cheap! Cash only, they take USD but its the same dollar $ value. I wish they take credit cards, hehe. & the Verdict: Yummy, the congee hits the spot for comfort food, loved how it is cooked and they add peanuts too. Love the packet of sauce for the rice rolls, the umami-ness, so good. Best to eat it hot and fresh! Don't forget to ask for chili sauce, to add that extra spicy kick! For now, I am not sure I'll ever find a spot that is closest to Hei Hei for my congee and rice roll fix until I get to visit Richmond, BC again.

Also, my Taiwanese friend said this was the best in Richmond so I think that's a good sign. The friends I have brought here have also enjoyed it and would come back. The food comes out pretty promptly, hot and fresh. You can't go wrong with ordering one of their beef noodle soups. I also like their deep fried items, having tried their chicken nuggets and squid tentacles. I want to try their other appetizers as well. Their menu is quite extensive and also has a dim sum section. I notice a lot of customers ordering their drinks too, although I have not tried any myself. Service is very good and attentive. They are not short staffed here at all. The staff are always refilling your tea, which is delicious. I will definitely be back. The restaurant is a decent size, so even if it is busy, there shouldn't be too long a wait. Plus you can add yourself to the waitlist online before arriving, if needed. Since it is in a strip mall, parking is free and always available and you can do some grocery shopping in the area afterwards.

We came in a group of 3 and had to wait about 10-15 minutes to be seated when they just opened at 12 PM. I ordered a Tripe Beef Noodle Soup with the flat noodles and they were delicious! I also got a four seasons tea. It was refreshing and nice to have with my meal. My friends both got a Beef Shank Noodle Soup, which they also enjoyed. For those that don't know, Chang Fen is a silky and soft steamed rice noodle that's made in a sheet, filled, and then rolled up and served with a savory soy sauce and chili oil. Classic fillings include shrimp, beef, pork, and veggies, but there are many other combinations, and Yin Ji introduced me to my new favorite, pork and olive! We also had to enjoy a "frozen HK milk tea" with it! Frozen here = chilled and it's served in a big bowl of ice so you don't dilute the rich flavor of the tea! As a non Chinese speaker in a rich Chinatown, service and communication can be challenging but that was not the case here at all! The staff was so welcoming, happily spoke English and helped us where necessary and made the visit incredible! It started because we saw signs saying cash only, but had not exchanged USD, and they quickly told us CC was welcome with an added fee, which we happily paid. I'm so glad I found Yin Ji and made the trip to get here during my time in Vancouver. If you're a fan of Chinese cuisine, especially breakfast and lunch staples, this is a must!

I'd been wanting to try some Xian specialities: particularly liangpi and paomo. My group shared two liangpi (the classic and the sesame, these were around 8-9 dollars each and you could probably eat one as a meal or share with someone as an appetizer/side), a biang biang noodle in Xian pork vinegar soup as well as a lamb paomo. Both liangpis which are cold chewy noodles were flavourful and had a great texture (I think I'd recommend classic if it's your first time!) What blew me away was the biang biang soup, the pork pieces were generous and the vinegarness of the soup was very unique. The paomo had vermicelli and lots of soaked bread pieces and lamb: much more gentle and lamb flavoured. Overall, portions were huge and the bill came out to around $55 for everything which was more than reasonable! I definitely recommend getting the liang pi and biang biang noodles. The liang pi is perfect for the summer as it's served cold (it's also slightly spicy) with cucumbers. The biang biang noodles had a really delicious sauce and the texture of the noodles made it stand out. It's very wide and had a nice chew (this might become one of my favourite noodle dishes)! The restaurant has a lot of space and can accommodate larger groups as well as individual diners. Service is quick and the staff calls out the order to each other so it's a very lively environment.
