We used to go this restaurant because it is close to our home but the owner is extremely rude for no apparent reason. Always mad for some reason. We order a lot but the portion size is getting worse and worse. We ordered the buy 3 get 1 free for 3 of us but the owner told the kitchen people to do something in the back and came out with bowls with extremely small portions. Pho Van is definitely one of the better Vietnamese restaurants in the Hacienda/Rowland Heights area. They are tucked away in a small strip mall off Hacienda Blvd across from the Vons shopping center. They have a pretty full menu with selections of pho, com, bun, banh mi as well as appetizers and drinks. Good hole in the wall type pho restaurant. There was a funky smell walking in but after being there for a bit you can no longer smell it. There was no line or wait period do be seated. For a small mom and pop shop away from Westminster, this place is not bad. They have a small parking lot in this little plaza behind a gas station and Christy's Donuts. There's a jerky shop next door, so that's pretty interesting. I tried a broken rice dish with pork. It was pretty good. I should have taken the lady's recommendation to get the combination plate, which comes with shrimp. Grilled shrimp always makes a broken rice dish more enjoyable. Pho - I found the broth flavorful on multiple occasions. When you get take-out, they give you more than enough soup for the noodles. I ask for the bean sprouts to be boiled, and they remember every time! The place is small but clean. Maybe most customers get take out because there weren't too many dine-in guests. The lady who works here speaks Vietnamese and Chinese. This certainly isn't our favorite place to get pho, but it's the closest and all the other places we like are either farther away, or their parking situation is so bad, it's not worth dealing with so we often go here when we want a quick meal of pho. A man was serving us our pho & his nose is all bloody, which really put me off... I was shocked to see him just walk around serving guests like that. We'v ordered takeout here a few times and we really liked the food each time. Hubby usually get beef pho with ramen noodles, I'v tried vermicelli with shrimps, shrimp spring rolls and BBQ chicken wings. The pho soup flavor is definitely one of the best. The wings from last time were very delicious but the portion was ridiculous. I don't think it was a full order because they ran out of wings on a Sunday evening. To start, Pho is not just Pho. Either there's personality, boxed soup base, or it's diluted to that point it's just a shadow of itself. Tonight I believe I've had my first combo of diluted boxed soup base. Now, I'm not going to call myself an expert or connoisseur of Pho. But, I've been eating it for decades now. And, I always sample the broth before I eat. I sample it four or five times. First before adding the sides and once after adding each individual side. Then I dig in. The meat was good, the tripe was sliced thin. So far so good. But, I just couldn't get over the broth. It just wasn't up to that level you would call a decent bone broth. Next was the spring rolls. I don't know where you would serve a spring roll where the stuffing is falling out before you even manage to dip it. What I had was rice paper with a side of rice noodle, cucumber, green onion, shrimp, carrots, lettuce, and sliver of what I think was brisket thin sliced. As for the egg rolls. Just save your money and pick them up at BMC. You'll actually get what you pay for. And it's decent for the price. Here, you get an egg roll literally the size of your thumb.
