Had a friend coming back for a visit so we decided to get some pho while the weather was a bit chillier. Normally, I'd go to Cafe Hoang or Le's Pho but wanted to try a new place. Inside is pretty big, looks like it'd be good for a celebration or small party/gathering. As soon as were seated, they gave us waters and menus. I got the rice plate (which came with two sunny side eggs! an extra plus in my book, and a side of soup) and my friend got the pho dac biet (special) with no tendon. The broths were very tasty and hearty. We were pretty happy with everything, except the service which was why I knocked out one star. It was just maybe three tables? We were heading to a nearby Asian restaurant on Broadway for a holiday dinner, but that place was very full with diners so we wound up needing to look for an alternate venue. We sort of stumbled upon Pho Viet, and we were impressed by how it looked clean and "not empty" from the outside. Based on these factors, we walked in and hoped for a good meal. There seems to be a large room in the back with a stage area, so you can even rent the place out for a big event or party. We sat in "Booth Number One" which just happens to be a small table in the corner on the flip side of the entry. The service was efficient and courteous, though there was a puzzling moment at the end when they were wondering if they gave me the correct check or not. Pho Viet has an enormous menu listing hundreds of menu items, though as you might expect from a Vietnamese restaurant with the name in its title there is some emphasis on pho. I ordered a bowl of pho with beef and meatballs. The beef broth was pretty good, and to be honest tasted better than the slices of beef or the meatballs. There were noodles that did the job, and I studiously added the toppings (bean sprouts, mint leaves, lime wedge, jalapeno slices) to enhance the flavor. I was amused by the baby pho listing, as this is a kid's serving and emphatically states that no vegetables are in this one! My friend enjoyed a veggie-friendly adult dish featuring tofu, and also a cup of coffee. I'm no pho expert, but my bowl of pho at Pho Viet did the trick. read more

One Wednesday, after attending a talk about Sex, Wine & Chocolate, my friend and I were hungry for some real food. (Wine & chocolate were not cutting it.) My friend was a fan of Chinese food, but had never had Vietnamese cuisine. I thought she would love a warm bowl of soup at Tank Noodle. We drove to the restaurant and discovered Tank Noodle was closed! Week nights in Little Saigon (Argyle & Broadway) are pretty quiet. Only a few restaurants still had lights on. Like a beacon in the dark, Pho Viet was bright and bustling. People of all sorts were happily gathered around square tables, hunched over steamy bowls. This was a good sign. We sat down and asked the waiter if there were vegetarian dishes and seafood dishes. There were plenty! My friend ordered the shrimp and crab noodle soup with clear noodles (special order). I ordered combination seafood and vegetables and vegetables on crispy pan fried rice noodles. I also got a plate of Ong Choy (hollow vegetable, special order) sauteed with garlic, shrimp egg rolls and pork egg rolls. The egg rolls were a little thick skinned for Vietnamese egg rolls. That didn't stop us from wrapping the crunchy rolls in green leaf lettus, dipping it in the salty-sweet fish sauce and finishing the whole thing. Our other dished soon arrived. The Ong Choy with garlic was good, but lacking umami. The seafood combination on pan fried noodles were delicious, but it needed just a little more salty-savoriness. And my friend's soup was delicious, but they brought her a bowl of pork soup instead of shrimp and crab soup. (She is a vegetarian, pescetarian). When she discovered that she had been sipping on pork soup, she was mortified. The waiter apologized and brought her a bowl of the noodle soup with shrimp and crab. Surprise, surprise... it tasted exactly the same! We decided not to ask if the broth was made with land animals. We were thankful for the warm food and friendly service, even if it wasn't perfect. But trust me, if Tank Noodle is open, that's where I would go. read more

I've never been a big fan of Bahn Mi, but maybe I just hadn't eaten a good one till I tried one at Veit Pho. The bread was fresh with the perfect crispyness to the crust. Overall very flavorful and was like $6 for a pretty good sized sandwhich. My wife had a vermicelli bowl and loved it. Restaurant Review Pho delight! We came to Argyle late and Tank pho looked packed so we walked around the corner and found this place was rather empty with no wait. The prices are a bit higher than Tank Pho. 9.25 for a large combo pho. Service was friendly and the restaurant looked clean. Our waiter spoke perfect english which was a plus! After ordering our food came rather quickly. The everything beef pho large came in a rather large bowl with lots of soup and noodles. Protein was average amount. The pho soup was a good blend of flavoring, not too sweet which is what I like, however maybe a touch or two of MSG as I am a bit thirsty after my meal. I would ultimately say a little bit more pricey than Tank Pho, but the soup tasted better IMHO. More protein would be better but what can you do! Came here for lunch on a Sunday afternoon and the place wasn't busy. Self sitting and service was prompt with our waters and order. Ordered their Pho Dac Biet, Bun Bo Hue, and Beef panfried noodles. Pho lacked Beef flavor, meat were skimped on the BunBoHue (only sliced beef no pork/hock), and the Beef on the pan fried noodles was hard with old meat aftertaste to it. Be warn, what we thought was the prices of what we ordered were increased by $3-$4 was tallied into our final tab and after we questioned the price differences, we were told new price increased were written in the front of the menu in small handwritten writing which is misleading. Delicious! We grew up in the neighborhood and moved to Naperville. We decided to try this place since it looked so clean on the inside. Cute inside with cloud cleaning decor. We were so pleased we ordered Pho from here. We had 2 pho's (beef & chicken) and a side of shrimp fried rice. The pho was flavorful and noodles were perfectly cooked. The shrimp fried rice was delicious and tasted so freshly made like someone's home kitchen. The place was spotless everything cleaned thoroughly. Bathrooms were so clean too! I had lunch there today with my wife and daughter. All of the food was fresh, well-prepared and flavorful. I had Bun Bo Nuong Cha Gio (#76). The beef was very thinly sliced and tender with excellent flavor. My daughter had Bun Bo Xao (#85), which had different beef, but also tender and flavorful. My wife ordered a couple of appetizers, Goi Cuan Ga-Vit with chicken (#7)--which was excellent--and papaya salad (#15), also excellent (with delicious pork and shrimp accenting the shredded papaya). The service was very good and the owner stopped by introduce herself and say hello, since she did not recognize us as regulars. We definitely will be back to try some other dishes. Very good food with authentic herbs and spices in their soups. The noodles were cooked perfectly which was awesome because so maNy places overcook rice noodles, especially pho noodles as they cook quickly. They were great with the kiddos food allergies too!! WHAT A GREAT PLACE TO DINE. I've been back here 3x in 2 weeks if that says anything and each time I am very impressed. Of all the places around Asia on Argyle to eat this is my favorite and I bring my friends here all of the time. My most recent visit I had the Papaya Salad (Shredded papaya w. shrimp, pork, onions, basil, cilantro, vietnamese coriander, lime juice, and roasted peanuts) and even the aroma of the dish was intoxicating. The pork was so tender I just wanted to savor every bite. My friend had the Muc Rang Muoi Hoac (Squid crispy deep fried) which he enjoyed as well. A funny thing happened though when he ordered a drink from the cocktail menu, a strawberry mojito they didn't know how to make it, but figured it out. When he finally got it some 20 minutes later he liked it. It just too a while. Another of my personal favorite dishes is Muc Xao Sa Ot (squid stir-fried w. lemongrass and hot pepper). It might very well be teh best squid dish I've ever had. I usually always also order the Special appetizer for 2 (spring rolls w. shrimp & pork skin spring rolls, fried egg rolls, fried shrimp cake, pork, grilled beef. Served w. lettuce, cucumber mints, steam rice noodle, hoisin peanut sauce, sweet & sour fish sauce) and most of the time have enough left over to take home. The aptmosphere of Pho Viet is a step above the other restaurants in the are and it's very clean and the staff are not only polite but at times quite fun. They have events at night sometimes and I look forward to checking that out sometime as well. Can't wait to try my next dish. read more

In my quest to find the best Bun Bo Hue spot in town, I stumbled upon pho viet and decided to try it. It was mediocre at best. I ordered bbh and chicken wings. Service was incredibly slow (despite being the first and only customer at the time). The chicken wings were disappointingly small. OK, well John B's review has pretty much summed up my opinion of Pho Viet. Cool, modern interior, OK service, OK food. The pho was not anywhere near as good as some I have had in the past, but everything was very fresh and you cant beat a hot bowl of soup in mid-January, so I gotta give props to that aspect. The meatballs had a strange consistency, with some having chewy bits inside. Probably best I didnt know what they were made of! I liked the fresh mint in the spring rolls we ordered, but again, overall they were not as good as other places. And thankfully Pho Viet had not gone the way of other Argyle Street restaurants with the triple digit theme. I went to two pho places in the matter of two hours - first I was at the all-time fav, Pho Xe Lua, but when I picked up the hubby, he wanted pho, too. So, back to Argyle, it was... I agree that the inside was very spacious, modern design, even Samsung flat screen tvs, too. They even had a dance floor with a karaoke machine and screen. However, service was a bit spotty - we asked about their egg rolls and if it came out with lettuce wraps and even though the waitress said yes, it came out with a lettuce garnish. Our friend asked how many egg rolls came with one order and we were told 'either two or three depending on the kitchen' - what kind of answer is that?? Since we had three people in our group, we went with two orders of the egg rolls. The pho was good - I liked the noodles and the tripe was a little lacking but the bowls were HUGE. If i can give NO STAR, i would!!! We waited around 15minutes to get seated when there are so many empty tables. When we got seated, we waited MORE than an HOUR for our orders to arrive, even WATER we weren't served while waiting. My family and I went here for lunch while at Argyle again. We came in and it was pretty packed. We were taken to one of the bigger tables. It took the waitress 15 minutes just to bring out our warm water. We were given three menus for 8 people. I noticed the employees were running around like crazy, but they were still very nice. The waitress lady came over like 3 times going back and forth to take our orders after a long 20 minutes of waiting. We even had to raise our hands. My brother wanted the fried squid and tofu but she said it would take very long to make so she suggested to pick something else. What in the world?.. I got #110 which I believe is the rice served with over easy egg and grilled chicken. The food took incredibly long to come out. We were starving. Plus, chicken was a little.. raw? There wasn't any raw "taste" but it definitely looked more raw than grilled. The rice and egg was okay. I saw many more people come in and waiting and lots of tables clustered with plates and dishes that were never cleaned up. I also saw like 3 tables of people looking around because no one was there to take their order. I'm not saying we're never coming here again, but I hope next time it wont be as chaotic. I didn't come here for the pho. *GASP* I know, I know...it sounds ridiculous considering the area that's packed with pho restaurants. We were actually craving Pad See Ew on a Friday night around 9:30pm. Note that this is only 1 of 2 restaurants that are open until 10pm in the Argyle/Broadway...so we got lucky. Our waiter was very attentive. Food came out quickly and was pretty incredible. Chunks of fresh vegetables, juicy & tender meat, broad rice noodles tossed in dark soy sauce definitely satisfied our cravings. One order was plenty for the two of us. I couldn't help but notice how big this place was compared to the other pho restaurants in the area. There was even a dance floor of some sort toward the back of the restaurant and I immediately had this mental images of parties being thrown there with performances on the dance floor and/or karaoke. Sort of gave the place a really homey and hospitable feel...but I'm not so sure if that's the type of ambiance I'm looking for when dining out. Would definitely return here to satisfy my occasional must-satisfy cravings for Pad See Ew...but not for a special occasion. read more

as far as argyle area pho restaurants go, pho viet's bun bo hue had by far the most different broth and ingredients that i've ever tried. the dish came with no cilantro and no onions on top, which is extremely uncommon for bun bo hue. the broth was also lighter in complexity and the noodles were thinner than normal (more akin to pho noodles than bun noodles). it was very bizarre - like walking into a parallel universe where everything is just a little bit off. to be fair, it's all a matter of perspective - had this been the first ever bun bo hue i've ever tried, i probably would've really liked it. so it's not to say others won't like it. but after having tried so many other places first with more "traditional" bun bo hue, pho viet just pales in comparison for me. bf's pho seemed to be more on par with what's "standard" as far as pho goes though, so maybe you'll fare better with the classic pho dishes. read more

Pho Viet has a ton of items on their menu and I can't say that I have tried too many of them but what I can say is that the few dishes that I have had have all been very good. The one thing you shouldn't get, although we all know you want to, is Pho. There are SO MANY other options here! Really great, freshly made options that you should try. Some of my favorites are the Vietnamese style marinated fried chicken wings, which are perfectly crispy and flavorful (think of the rich flavors of fish sauce, garlic, and soy sauce) and always arrive at your table freshly fried. It's best to wait a couple of minutes before you bite into one lest you burn yourself. The Hu Tieu Xao Ga is another of my favorites. It's a pretty basic seeming dish; rice noodles stir fried with chicken and vegetables. But once you get it at your table you'll know why it's something to talk about. The dual texture of the noodles, soft on one side and crispy on the other... makes my mouth water just writing about it! I've eaten many orders of this all by myself. The Bun Bo Hue, which is a new discovery for me (it helps to be married to a Vietnamese person), is a revelation. Why had I been ordering Pho for so long when I could have been ordering Bun Bo Hue? It does have beef, but also sliced Vietnamese pork sausage (the kind they put in the Banh Mi), blood sausage with a tofu-like texture, and pork belly! It comes with a plate of fresh accouterments, like a Pho would, but instead of the basil and other herbs, there's shredded cabbage and bean sprouts, as well as lime and sliced hot peppers. My husband prefers the Bun Mam, which is a seafood rice noodle soup. Being allergic to crustaceans, I haven't ever tried it, but it looks great and in his opinion, Pho Viet is the best place for it. At some point, you're going to get tired of always ordering pho and you're going to want to step outside the box. If you're not a picky eater and you like good food, you'll be pleasantly surprised. read more

Place is located in the prime of pho places being right in argyle- asian town. With all the other phone places around something has to be below the rest of the others and this would be it. First, location was fine they seem to have alot of space and the back even have a karaoke. It seems huge groups go there alot due to there fimiliarity of the location probably. Even got a ton of beer drinking the whole time. Second, the food was bad.. pho tasted like nothing especially the broth. Where it failed so hard. Isn't worth a try.
