READ THE LABEL. We collect wind chimes and art as we travel. When in Big Sur this past week, we bought a medium sized bell windchime. It was a little pricy at $110, but we like to support local art. The attendant gave us a new one in the box, instead of one already hanging that we were looking at. When we got home to Arizona, I unpacked the item, and found a MADE IN CHINA TAG!!! They appear to buy cheap art from China, and mark it up. If you want to support local art, find another store. read more

I hated this place. It has nice things, but they are so expensive that it made me mad. Now, I expected that things would be expensive, I mean it's a gift shop for tourists (i.e., things will be overpriced) and at Big Sur (i.e., an area where everything is overpriced). But if you look at something in this gift shop, and think about what would be an overpriced price for it, and then double that, then you'll almost be at the price for it. Like there was this tiny little jar of local salt that was about the size of a thimble, and I thought oh that's cute, maybe that would be a nice souvenier, and then it was either $17 or $19 when I looked at the price. I mean it was tiny!! I mean, it was the kind of thing that should be like $3, but I thought gift shop so probably $7 or $8, but no, more than double that. Things were crazy expensive, and the more I looked at things, the more it just pissed me off, and took away from the experience of even just looking at nice things without intention to buy. It made me want to leave the store. I've never had a feeling like that in any touristy gift shop I've ever been to in my life, not anywhere in the US including other coastal areas of CA, not overseas. It was also not friendly while you are browsing, nor welcoming when you walk in. I would not go here again, and I would not recommend it to friends. read more

I almost did NOT go inside the gift shop because I thought it would have something I have already seen. I was wrong. There's a lot of things to see and a downstairs section with clothing. I did purchase a bath fizz/bomb because I could use some de-stressing. The best part of this store? On the main level, go outside where the garden/outdoor merch is located and take in the beautiful view. I could just stare at that all day! read more

Phoenix gift shop at Nepenthe restaurant in Big Sur on Pacific Coast Highway is a nice addition to the restaurant scene to come by and explore! It's adjacent to Nepenthe restaurant upstairs, you park on the lot below and take the staircase up passing the entrance into Phoenix store. The wrap around outside terrace offers absolutely stunning views of the ocean, incredible! Be sure to check out the bliss below looking out from the cliff, the greenery and blue waters in the distance. They are magnificent and you don't have to work for it:) This is not your typical small souvenir shop but relatively large space occupied with all sorts of curiosities where anyone could find something their soul desires. My family and I are locals, we live in Carmel, and have been here more times than we can count..we have friends who have their goods and art in this shop...I always recommend people visiting to come here and take family visiting here. I love this gift shop and so do my kids. Yesterday 4/13/2023 my husband, two daughters and I decided to stop here after a hike so that my daughters could buy something with their allowance money. My eight year old walked in with her wallet and my 11 year old with her cash in hand perusing the aisles with smiles and excitement. Then I noticed a woman with shoulder length brown hair, eye glasses, in her 60' pr 70's I would guess, lurking around us watching us...she walked around the table of books slowly as we walked around just staring at us..then it dawned on me that she worked there..finally she was standing two feet away from my eight year old and I just STARING and I looked at her and said "hi!" And she said "hi lots of things to look at in here isn't there?" And it hit me that she was purposely following us as though we would steal something!!! I couldn't believe it and my blood was boiling..I walked away and told my husband to go with our kids as I stood outside beyond insulted and angry to be made to feel so uncomfortable! I had pointed out some jewelry and perfume as ideas for my birthday next month to my husband but will tell him to go elsewhere locally. Unbelievable! read more

Each time we are in Big Sur, we like to visit certain places. This is one of our favorite places to pick up a memento. Whether it is clothing from downstairs, or jewelry from upstairs, or just something random that catches your eye, there is a lot to choose from. The back deck has a great view and a garden feel. Don't forget to take the stairs down to the lower level. There's a cute dressing room too. Parking can be tricky in the summertime as it's limited and located on a curve so it's easy to pass by on your first visit. The jewelry is what catches my eye. They have a nice mix of different jewelers. Necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings to remember your visit. Have breakfast above at the cafe or lunch & dinner and a cocktail at Nepenthe..., then go shopping. It's a nice ritual. read more

Excellent gift shop, one of the most beautiful I have seen lately. It has 2 levels, and after seeing and admiring the above floor I was not expecting to be utterly surprised by the second level, equally attractive and full of surprising goodies. The good thing is that is not that expensive! The prices come in various ranges, from affordable silver jewelry to more expensive one with semi precious stones and intricate patterns. You have your dose of Americana stuff, faux vintage 50s and 60s, you got your native American section, Latin American colorful gifts(remember this place is super colorful, monochromatic people stay away:) and many soaps, floral smudges and anything and everything that smells good. The clothing section is very ethnic, boho-chic, with beautiful designed long dresses (Anthropologie, you stay away now), pretty hats and cute items that will make any coquettish woman very very happy. I recently visited Big Sur and had the unique opportunity to visit the Phoenix gift shop in near total, blissful isolation. The store sits literally on the side of a stunning Big Sur mountain next to the ocean. Rarely does a store, or any business really, have ocean views. Phoenix not only has ocean views, but it has breathtaking ocean views, from 1000 feet up, annd a balcony! It makes for mesmerizing views while shopping their eclectic array of bohemian goodies. Note: if bohemian chic isn't your style, they have lots of charming home decor and small gifts that easily pack in a suitcase. (Relevant for Summer/Early Fall '17) For those who don't know, several mudslides and a bridge failure cut-off a large portion of Big Sur that was accessible only via Highway 1. Long story short, there's a temporary footpath (a fun adventure, definitely check it out) from the northern side that allows you to visit "Big Sur Island" and bypass the failed bridge. If you were originally deterred from visiting Big Sur due to the road access issues, I definitely encourage you to take the footpath (an easy quarter mile hike), take the shuttle to the last stop (Nepenthe/Phoenix), grab a bite upstairs and then head to the gift shop below and snag a souvenir and soak in the amazing views. Bonus: be sure to find the balcony at the rear of the store, it has a bunch of wind chimes gently blowing in that ocean breeze. They instantly relax you while ceasing to care that you haven't had a cell signal the entire time..! Highly recommended read more

This place was a great addition to the restaurant up stairs. *look up for the Alien* We came down to check out this little wonder after we had dinner and a couple drinks. I must say, what a near collection of things to be sold. Very nice collection of inspirational books. Fun books. Educational books and other fun little things to take home with you. There is jewelry and art work. Local I believe. More books and a friendly staff. To greet you or help you find that special gift. I took my daughter over by the old school toys they had. I usually stop into this unique shop when I'm in this neck of the woods but I just received a one of a kind Birthday card from their along with a bar of Miso Pretty Deluxe Exotic Luxury Beauty Bar in Juciy Persimmon and Wild Orchid and a card with a vintage photo of some lady on the beach with a little roll (belly) that read: "My liquid diet is going well. So far I've lost 2 days." and inside: Hope your Birthday finds you celebrating!" Felt like the card was custom made for a second. read more

Fantastic location of course, but the items on sale here reminded me a bit of an upscale Cost Plus with a smattering of Berkeley Tibetan handicrafts thrown in. Add a bit of incense, jewelry, New Agey music, selection of metaphysical/spiritual books, statuettes of the deity of your choice, and you get the picture. I could spend hours inside this cute gift shop and a lot of dollars too. You can find lovely one-of-a-kind pieces ranging from Latin America to African designs, even some cool Asian artifacts. There are also amazing rocks, jewelery, spiritual books and neat displays of art. Most items are a bit up there in price, even the sale items are very high, however I still enjoy what this store has to offer. I recently purchased a beautifully hand-crafted box here & get compliments on it often from my house guests. Its more about a reminder for me, every time I look at this piece it brings me back to this wonderful area and what an amazing experience I had both in this shop and above at their great restaurant. read more

The store has a nice variety of gift items from books to furniture to odd items like African items, jewelry, music and more, with clothing in the lower level. Spiritual & Bohemian!! Almost anybody can find something special in any price range! I got 2 books for gardening that were awesome! Totaled $30 I also went downstairs to the clothing department and the ladies down there were extremely helpful! I got a handmade sweater that's cost $364 it was very pricey but I couldn't resist!! It was my little splurge on my vacation & I'll have it forever :) this place was very special and if I had more money Id buy everything! read more

I love buying gifts here to send to my family members. My daughter's employee discount doesn't hurt either. I sometimes stand outside while I'm waiting for my wife to turn over every item to look at the price. I go in and get what I want in under 7 minutes. Wow there are so many talented artists and jewelers up in the area. The shop has some beautiful things and is well worth browsing through.

OK, let me precede my review with a disclaimer: I love jewelry and books so any place that carries a good selection of either is aces in my book. This gift shop was much larger than I anticipated (2 levels!) and carried a large and varied assortment of goods. There is a balcony where they hang windchimes where you can stand and gaze out to the sea and a table outside the store where they place clearance books. Walking in is like walking into a kaleidoscope of bright bits of color. They have a pretty big selection of jewelry and a good number of bookshelves stuffed with interesting books on all sorts of subjects. They also have a great section dedicated to children's toys and the entire downstairs houses handmade clothing and purses and knit goods. They also carry cd's, lotions & perfumes and handkerchiefs. Some of the stuff they carry can be found at run of the mill giftshops but mixed in are some great and unusual finds. It's a great place to browse and you're sure to find something for everyone on your list. It may not all be at affordable prices though but it's still fun to nose through all the piles and displays. read more
