In my former American life I was very active... ballet and pointe from a young age until my early…read more20s, then yoga, pilates, spinning, Muay Thai and kettlebells up to 5-6 times a week. Since moving to the UK, it seems to come in waves. Yoga has been the only calming force and constant. Over a month ago, Abi opened up her boutique studio near Strathbungo and Queens Park and I have been a fan ever since. Compared to impersonal big box gyms, Barbreck is intimate and unintimidating, while offering you the ability to challenge yourself. Kettlebells? Athletic strength and conditioning (Olympic lifting)? Bootcamp? Boxing? Metafit? Pick your poison, and step up to the challenge. Classes are small, and guaranteed individual attention; something that is lacking when you sign up for a class where they squeeze in 30 students! It's a challenging environment, but also friendly and encouraging. In addition to classes, I work with Abi during personal training sessions where she creates workouts geared towards my goals. Though I think I made the mistake of telling her I wanted to strengthen my core for yoga inversions and arm balances, and I'm now in a world of pain. To compliment the fitness side, Abi also offers sports and massage therapy which is housed next to the studio. From training, injury assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and therapy, is there anything Abi cannot do? Oh she's also part owner of the Scottish Kettlebell Club too ;-)

After a wee hiatus and having only focused on yoga/pilates the last few years, recent strength…read moretraining and boxing has been really testing my body. To compliment a rigorous training program, it's important for self-care. While I have my favourite massage therapists in the city, it was important to receive comprehensive treatment from Abigail Johnston Sports Therapy. Since I have been working closely with Abi the past 2 months, she understands the strain and stress my body has been under. By seeking sports therapy, it helps decompress and relieve tension in muscles, and assists in the recovery process. Following a week of kettlebells, personal training, and a 3-hour session on bar bell and kettlebell technique, my body was in desperate need of R&R. I booked in an hour for sports massage with Abi and she worked her magic over my wrecked body, while focusing on the areas with the most tension. This was no fluffy spa massage with hardly any pressure; Abi gets in there to relieve the tension... in my shoulders, back, quads. It's murder at the time, but once it's over you feel like a brand new person with a spring in your step. After the session, she shared some observations and tips that I could do to prevent future injury. In addition to massage therapy, Abi offers injury assessment and rehabilitation. As I continue training with Abi, there is no question I will seek her expertise in recovery and book in for massage as often as I can!
