We were looking to try out some traditional desserts that we had never experienced before. Of the many food carts parked side by side, this one seemed to attract our attention the most. We stood by and watched how the Marquesita is made. Batter is added to a crepe pan and cooked made to order. A variety of fillings were available to choose from, but we asked for their most popular food item. Apparently shredded cheese and nutella is a favorite choice of the locals. Joe K and I shared this unusual dessert combo, and the blend was better than I expected. I wasn't quite sure at first if I would like cheese and chocolate together, but it turned out pretty tasty after all. It was a nice ending to our all day food truck food binge at the park!

So, being the first English language reviewer on the page, let me explain what this is. Marquesitas are pastries, to go pastries to be exact, rolled into some sort of a fried crispy tortilla, with cheese and a dash of nutella. Granted, there are a few variations, but the one I got appeared to be the most common. The flavor combo is amazing and it's a true street food dessert that you cannot miss while traveling! The truck stays open late, I came close to 11pm. Sometimes the most unexpected combinations get you, so you if you are a mildly adventurous eater, make sure to give this a try!

But hidden away behind an Oxxo convenience store, just to the left of the famous Captains Cove is a little Mayan place. There is no sign out front to tell you where this place is, you have to look hard and kind of know where to look. This is an outdoor cantina specializing in Mayan dishes. They feature baked fish, vegetarian cuisine, some pork, some steak and lots of dishes wrapped in banana leaves. There is no indoor seating, it's all outside with a nice view of the lagoon to keep you company. The bar serves up some mean cocktails, I personally recommend the tamarind margharita. The menu itself is a bit limited but it's all good. I had three vegetarian "tostada's". I think they are called puanchitos or something like that. Whatever it's called, it's fine! This is really an undiscovered gem and I suggest you try it before it becomes common knowledge and everyone will be trying to eat there.
