After the Alter of the Fatherland, we visited this. Nearby, 2 min walks. Again lots of stairs to reach the top. This square is located on top of Capitol Hill. It was an important place of worship dedicated to Roman gods, with a large Temple of Jupiter which has since disappeared. Today it is the seat of the municipality of Rome. Rome is all about Michelangelo, isn't it? This place is also designed by Master Michelangelo who remodeled the facades of the existing buildings and designed the monumental staircase that accesses it. It is square in shape, it is framed by three main buildings: 1- The Senatorial Palace (Palazzo Senatorio, on the right-hand side of the square), this is the Town Hall; 2- Palazzo dei Conservatori, the home of the Capitoline Picture Gallery, 3- Capitoline Museums (left side of the square). In the center is a copy of the bronze equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius , yes he was Roman Emperor too. Wandering around here for 30 minutes especially in the evening was a blessing. Behind this, you can see remains at the Roman forum.

The Senatori and the replica of the Marcus Aurelius equestrian statue in the Piazza del Campidoglio.

Piazza del Campidoglio is a very pretty square in Roma, Italy. This hilltop square is lined with museums and government buildings and offers panoramic views of the Roman forum. Piazza del Campidoglio was designed by Michelangelo in 1538 as part of the revival plan of the Capitoline Hill. Three Roman government buildings, the Palazzo dei Conservatori, the Senatorio, and the Nuovo surround the piazza. A replica of the equestrian statue of the emperor Marcus Aurelius stands in the middle of the piazza. (The original statue is located nearby in the Palazzo dei Conservatori.) I highly recommend visiting this spot in Rome if you want to take some breathtaking pictures of the Forum.

Designed by Michelangelo, Campidoglio is Rome's city hall square on the the same hill that has ruled Rome for millennia - the Capitoline Hill. Ascend the intentionally shallow stairway "cordonata" so your vista slowly expands as you climb higher. Admire the beautiful Renaissance-era palaces that still serve as Rome's city halls in conjunction as the Capitoline Museums. Appreciate how Michelangelo used the building arrangement and even the ground pattern to create one of the unique plazas that you may have seen! If you are traveling toward the Roman ruins area from the north, I highly recommend making this your starting point, because after you admire the Renaissance-era piazza, you will be rewarded with an impressive sneak-peek view of the Roman Forum after! Even if you are traveling from the other direction, you can also look back toward that you have admire and appreciate Michelangelo's beautiful remix of the Capitoline Hill. --- tl;dr version: 1) Michelangelo's design on Capitoline Hill 2) Excellent starting point for a Roman ruins itinerary

Wow I love the Campo de Fiori. The name means the field of flowers, because it used to be a field…read moreof flowers and vegetable gardens here before it became this square. Unfortunately from the 16th to 19th century this place became a public execution site. Yikes. The most famous execution was Giordano Bruno in 1600, in which there is now a statue in his honor for freedom of thought. Happy thoughts, happy thoughts. Pass forward to present day. This area is lively with the open air markets where you can find vendors selling produce, flowers, spices, cheese, and artisanal goods. My boyfriend and I came here to explore the live market and also to look for souvenirs to bring home. The vendors here are really aggressive and I would have enjoyed it more if they gave me space to look instead of hound me to buy buy buy. Like chill dude can I look at what I'm buying. Sigh. We were here til closing time and even get to see how the vendors efficiently and quickly packed up their stalls and belongings to wrap up for the day. And of course... a great area to enjoy some gelato.

Once a site for public executions (Bruno's brooding statue still watches over), it now specializes in overpriced pasta and garlic braids. It's more performance art than produce. Vendors heckle, truffle oil flows freely, and yes, someone will try to sell you limoncello in a boot. I walked through as part of a food tour, which felt like the right way to enjoy the chaos, briefly, and with snacks elsewhere. Not the best market in Rome, but definitely the most theatrical.

We got to view it because we had a tour of the museums that included the gardens. I believe you can only view it by controlled guided tour! Our tour guide took us through describing all the different sculptures and their significance to the Vatican. Many were gifts from heads of state. Others were placed with significance form popes from previous times. There are so many places for the people who live in the Vatican to come and find peace or relax and reflect! There is even a helipad in the back corner so the Pope can hop in and head off to his summer villa. On our tour it was even mentioned that some Popes enjoyed hunting back in the day of different animals that roamed the garden. Awesome...ancient Pope's hunted! Maybe Phil Robinson (aka Duck Dynasty) could come hunt in the garden with uncle Psi and the current Pope! You can get some different perspectives of the different buildings of the vatican from a different vantage point and really appreciate and see a different natural outdoor beauty of the Vatican!
