I cannot describe the slow, horrific realization I experienced as the night progressed when it was clear that nothing would be tasting good...but it started with the rice. It was effectively clear that whoever made this rice had never eaten, nor actually seen rice. What this restaurant markets as a $5 bowl of "jasmine rice" was drastically undercooked and indelibly dry, with no vapor of Jasmine within its sad grains. I had no choice but to abandon this bowl of rice on the table, slowly succumbing to its fate of cold inedibility--a cruel yet necessary act that my Asian mother would appallingly remark is a punishable crime against our family. Every dish, from the "crispy" brussel sprouts to the miso pork jowl was soggy and oversauced, and to add insult to injury--often with a starkly disappointing, overpowering sauce. The pork jowl was charred beyond recognizability, leaving much to the imagination of whether this was actual pork jowl to begin with, or any other sad part of the pig that was martyred to make this dish. Even the papaya salad--a simple and executable dish, was tasteless aside from the overwhelming vinaigrette that drowned out its sad tendrils of papaya, leaving no complexity in its flavor. I do not doubt that this was once a great restaurant, worthy of its accolades--but I would be remiss to not warn patrons and the owners of this establishment that whoever is seemingly running this restaurant now, cannot in good respect be called a cook with experience in Asian cuisine. read more

Yet another spot I have had on my list forever and finally came in. BLOWN AWAY. We sat at the bar because when we arrived every single table was already reserved! We tried 6 cocktails (all outstanding) the papaya salad, and from the HH menu the pork laab, the wings and Brussels. This was my first time dining at Picalilli, and we walked in without a reservation--not realizing how popular this spot is! We were initially offered bar seating, but we were hoping to sit outside. The patio was full, but thankfully, the staff was able to seat us at a sidewalk table, which worked out perfectly. My friend and I wanted to take advantage of their happy hour, which runs 4-6pm on Fridays (and just one hour--starting at 5pm--Monday through Thursday). We were seated about 15 minutes before happy hour ended, so I quickly went up to the waiter to place our order. He was super chill and polite, and honestly, every staff member we interacted with was friendly and accommodating. A+ for service! I'm not typically big on East Asian fusion cuisine, and some of the dishes are on the spicy side, which I enjoy. That said, the food was good--just not something I'd personally go out of my way for. We ordered the potato wedges and chicken wings, which were recommended by one of my clients who's a big fan of this restaurant. We also tried the pork cheek with rice--a dish I'd never had before, but my friend wanted to try it. I actually enjoyed it more than I expected, especially for a first-timer! We had two puppies so we were seated on the patio which had heaters (thank goodness!) and a cute aesthetic. Although we never went inside, it looked cool and vibey. The menu is accessible via QR code and you order via Toast on your phone. We ordered our cocktails and food items in their entirety without a server coming to our table. It's definitely convenient but felt the personalized touch of a sit down restaurant was missing. We enjoyed the Venetian Spritz ($10) and Phuket Let's Go! ($9) cocktails from the happy hour menu; the Venetian Spritz was slightly on the sweeter side and the Phuket Let's Go! was a creative blend of alcohol and tea. TLDR: 5/5 service and ambiance, 4/5 food, 2/5 value - and beware if you don't like spicy food! To start off, our server Diego was amazing! Service is definitely top notch here. The restaurant is also super pretty. The indoor seating has dim lighting and is louder (probably not great for a first date or meet up with a friend), while outdoor is a little quieter with a nice view of downtown Culver City. They also have heaters outside and blankets for you to use, since it gets chilly at night. The dining experience and ambiance were really nice. The food was good - kind of like expensive tapas, spicy Asian style. Most items on the menu are spicy, so if you don't like spice, your options are pretty limited here. For 2 people, we got the pork jowl, fried squid, and tomato curry. The pork jowl was unique and tasty. The fried squid was essentially a small portion of calamari marked up 2 or 3 times the usual price. The tomato curry was the most expensive dish (30 some dollars), yet it seemed like the smallest one - just some vegetables in a tomato curry sauce. We added some jasmine rice for ~$5 to go with the tomato curry. I also tried the passionfruit lemonade, but it was a little too sour for my liking. Everything was yummy, but I'm not sure if it was worth the price. Our bill came out to ~$120 (3 small dishes + rice, 2 drinks). This was a lot higher than we expected, considering the meal felt pretty small and not too filling. Overall, I'm not sure if the prices are justified here - Piccalilli is a bit out of budget, so I'm afraid I won't be returning. read more

tldr: Unique flavors for Culver City with a great happy hour and nice bar. Food - 4/5 Nam Prik Wings 2 flats and 2 drumsticks came out piping hot and spicy, with a strong peanut flavor. Even the mint salad it was served with had a kick (so no relief there) but it was a bit on the sour side in my opinion, but I will readily admit I am sensitive to sour and that's a big reason I generally don't like pad thai (too sour for me... even when others don't think it's sour) Brussels Sprouts At some point they probably were crispy but by the time I received them (still very hot) they weren't so crispy so more but had absorbed the flavor which is part of what made it so rich with that dark soy sauce flavor. If you like dark soy sauce with a spicy kick, this is a great choice. Miso Pork Jowl Served slightly chilled with an INTENSE citrus ponzu flavor. My server recommended scooping up extra sauce, but honestly, even without doing that it was too much for me. This was least my favorite dish but could be because as I mentioned above I am not a big fan of sour/citrus/acidity. If the flavor was a Singha Thai Lager/Beer Same as any Singha with a decent happy hour price but nicely served with a chilled glass. Bangtao Tea Basically a spiked Thai tea, perfect accompaniment for the spicy food it is served with. I have a medium spice tolerance I would say- so as a warning for those who are sensitive my tongue was tingling the whole time and nose was runny. Good combo with the beer though - hehe.
