I've been going to Pickering for many, many years. They have a wide selection of brands and types of dry and canned dog food. If you have a question and you can't decide which to choose, Jim is very knowledgeable. In the Spring and Fall there's a wide selection of plants, both annuals and perennials. Also, if you have any questions there's always a knowledgeable person to help. Customer service is great. Prices are reasonable and I prefer to shop at a local, owner's store. read more

STAY AWAY FROM THIS STORE! The customer service is horrendous, especially Kim, the manager in charge of the animals. Last year, she sold us 2 male guinea pigs, which we asked about and she confirmed multiple times. A month later, after our kids had grown attached to their new pets, we were surprised to learn that one of them was female AND pregnant! When we contacted the store and spoke to Kim, to say she was unhelpful is an understatement. The store refused to help out at all with our predicament, caused by their mistake. Apparently they sneak a line into their receipt that states that the gender cannot be guaranteed - something that was never verbalized to us. In the end, we couldn't even get an apology or word of sympathy: just a bunch of excuses and nastiness. Do yourself a favor and stay far away from this store. read more

I started using Pickering Valley Feed in 1990 for buying plants to take to the St. Lawrence River on the Canadian border. Their plants were priced reasonably, hardy & healthy. And I've gone back every year since. Their selection of dog supplies & toys is expansive. Birdseed is plentiful, though higher in price & plants still strong & healthy for PA weather. My neighbors notice how robust my container plants are! Also love supporting a family business. read more

This store is located on the uwchlan ave closer to Pottstown pike. They have wide range of items and my favorite time to go is during the spring and fall especially for their plant and tree varieties in spring. I have got roses from them and are very healthy and also lot of annual plants as a flat. Their pricing is very reasonable on the plants and then service is awesome. Try them during the planting season in spring and fall and you will be surprised and happy you did !! read more

It was such a beautiful day when we visited, and the flowers were all outside on display. It was like walking into a fairy village if there every was one. All the plants were in great health, and blooming in incredible bursts of color everywhere you went. There were a few employees walking around, patiently helping customers choose the right assortments. I must have asked a dozen questions, but the woman who helped us was kind and very thorough as she walked us through the various rows. We ended up purchasing the perfect potted flowers we needed for our front porch. Everything was also reasonably priced, and there was even an extra 30% discount the weekend we visited. Once we decided what to buy, an employee wrote a receipt for us which we then paid for inside. It was really convenient as then we didn't have to haul everything inside when we could load everything into our car first. Next time I'm in need of potted plants, I'm definitely coming back to see what they have in stock! read more

Stopped here upon recommendation of a friend of the self serve dog washing area. For $10, wash your pup and get a free wash after 10 washes. Stalls are of varying heights. Shampoo and conditioner is available. Towels and dryers for after the bath. An apron for you. read more

I love this store. I've lived in Phoenixville for 17 years and have passed Pickering Valley feed many Times. I would go in for bird seed and check the plant prices but never looked for cat food or pet supplies until a couple years ago. Pickering Valley Feed staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. I feel that I'm a valued customer when I walk out the door. Their pet food is priced very reasonably and they carry a wide selection. They have many varieties of birdseed suet, and feeder that are also priced competitively. I've never been disappointed with anything I received from them. They have ponds, fish, and other small critters. My only disappointment is that I feel the potted plants and hanging baskets are too expensive. read more

We purchased a bunny from their store before I realize I had severe allergies and asthma to bunnies. (I have a dog and a cat and they do not affect my allergies.) I contacted Pickering numerous times about our situation and they refused to help and told me to take him to the SPCA. We've cared for and loved the bunny and will always consider animals a part of our family. When we adopt it's for life. Unfortunately, they see them purely as a profit making opportunity and will not assist me in finding a loving home for him. What a disappointment.. I moved here about 3 months ago and despaired of ever finding the brand of frozen food that my dogs have eaten, and thrived on for over 10 years. Thank goodness I found Pickering!!!! They carry the brand that I've always bought for my girls and even have a great incentive program that enables me to get the 13th bag free! I grabbed three bags out of their super cold freezer, and the pucks were nicely frozen and not all clumped together. Winner winner frozen chicken dinner for my healthy little weiners! The staff could not have been more friendly and helpful! They told me when the food comes in every week, and told me that they could even do special orders for me! The store is very clean and well organized in every department. Now I'm thinking about getting a fish so the girls will have something to look at between meals.. read more

Very upsetting visit to their store. Went to get supplies for my rabbits, and saw the way they "care' for small animals there. Horrifying. Absolutely no hay, multiple rabbits in tiny tiny cages, they all seemed to be experiencing heat stroke. Rabbits cannot tolerate heat, they didn't even have a fan or anything! I did say something to an employee, I felt like they just brushed it off as no big deal that animals they are supposed to be caring for, before they go to their forever homes, are not taken care of at all. There were also kittens in extremely tiny metal cages, crammed in together. So sad for the animals they sell. read more

Good selection and layout. I like the quality of sunflower seeds here better than what I can get at Tractor Supply. It feels a little more curated and less corporate lowest-common-denominator in terms of product offerings. Not the cheapest, but I would definitely buy other things here in the future. Purchased three straw bales today. One was 10-15 heavier than the other two. Same thing happened the last time I bought bales there a few months ago. My previous purchases were much more uniform and closer in weight to the heavier bale. Also some guy tried to tell me that a 15 or 17 pound of wood shavings for $35 was a better bargain than buying 4 pound shavings for $6. I like supporting local businesses but I won't be going back. read more

They have a decent selection of items but they have one of the worst, if not the worst, customer service of all the pet supply stores. It didn't use to be that way and they've gone increasingly downhill for years until it seems there's not much further down to go. They have far too many young teens "working" there who just stand or sit around and goof around with each other, even making you wait at the register until they've finished their personal conversations. You ask a question and they stare at you with blind eyes, never knowing the answer but not even having enough sense to respond, just a dumb, blank look. More times than I can remember I've placed a special order for something but never receive the call to let me know it's come in, and the next time I'm in there I see MY item on the shelf for sale, but again, when you ask them about this all you get is that same blank look without an apology or any audible response at all. The other day I called before just going to check on the availability and price of 2 items, they confirmed both were in stock and gave me the price, I asked them to pull them and set them aside because it was a busy day for me and I was on my way. I got there and there was only one, so I told them there was supposed to be the other item and the little girl just snapped, "that's out of stock"...but I'd only just called less than an hour ago and was told it was there and would be pulled for me! I told her that and still, same blank stare with no words or any apology for the boundless stupidity and frankly, rudeness to waste my time with lies. I asked her who'd I'd spoken to on the phone, but still, just a blank stare with no words as she began ringing me up - the absurd audacity! Nope...they lost the entire sale and I went somewhere else...who has this time to waste or the patience to deal with empty heads and such little concern for others, even when they are the ones who wasted your time and lied in the process! I decided I couldn't hold my opinion back any longer and they deserve to get a yelp review so others don't waste their time thinking the voice on the phone is connected to an actual brain that's providing you with the correct information. read more

I just got off the phone with Pickering in the midst of the coronavirus. I've been a fan of this store (which feels more like a community) for a long time, but the service today made me beyond grateful for them. Valerie patiently walked me through food options for my pups, took payment over the phone, and told me to call when I arrive and my items will be brought out to my car. Pickering Valley Feed and Farm. I ordered two cases of dog food and went out to pick it up. They were three cans short and when I asked about it they refunded my money for three cans. I don't know where they got the prices to refund however since I looked on the site and saw the food for 3.36 per can. The guy refunded the wrong amount as far as I could tell but when I went in to ask they kept me waiting and then called the guy to the front desk and that's when I said forget it. I'm not hanging around while they figure this out. They need to get the act together. What if there was no canned food for me? I paid online and they sold some of my order. Not going back. Would give a minus 1 if I could. No I'm sorry or anything. Just made me wait. read more

This used to be my FAVORITE place to go to. Until recently they started to put baby bunnies in this big plastic container so everyone and their mother can touch and pick up the rabbits with no supervision at all. I am a rabbit owner and I know exactly how rabbits should be treated and handled. I went to talk to an employee about my concern about the rabbits being exposed like that. However, her response was neither reassuring or factual. She said rabbits should be exposed so they become more social. This can be true to an extent. However, I don't see any rabbit or even a human wanting to be picked up, touched, screamed at, etc while they're trying to rest. I went in there today for rabbit food, and walked out with nothing but disgust. I honestly won't be coming back here. I used to recommend this place to others but I now will be doing the opposite. read more

In spite of the negative reviews by rabbit owners, this place Is a friendly caring atmosphere where the they have genuine concern about their customers and their animals. It is a family run business compared to the large corporate box stores. The staff is knowledgeable and will help you find what you need. The only reason I give this pet store 2 stars is because it's close to me and they have a few products I can't find at the chains. However the way they keep their rabbits is horrible. Wire bottom cages, hardly ever any hay, giant bowls of pellets...all these things are a big no when caring for a rabbit. Especially since most of their rabbits are under 1 year old. Rabbits have special dietary needs, and baby rabbits even more so. They need to eat a diet that is 80% hay...NOT 80% pellets. And no, the fact that "there's timothy hay in the pellets" does not count. They need to chew the actual piece of hay for the fiber and to help keep their teeth down. These are just BASIC care requirements that should be common knowledge and yet this pet store seems to know nothing about them. Isn't that your entire purpose as a pet store? I have only been here a handful of times and only within the past couple months. This review is only geared towards their fish/aquarium section. I was there today and was appalled by the way the fish are treated. Someone was buying feeder guppies and the girl that was catching them treated those poor fish like they were garbage. One of them fell on the floor as she was transferring them from the net to the bag. The customer pointed it out and she said "oh it's ok". He was trying to catch it and she not to worry about it. He said the poor thing was swimming away on the floor and she said "yeah, to his death" and laughed. Then another young kid helping someone else get fish was banging the net against the cup to get them out. Just an absolute disregard for the fact that these are living things. Clearly a huge lack of training and compassion for animals in this department. The last time I was there I asked a clueless employee for aquarium plants and he put them bags for me without water or even tying the bag closed. Pure laziness. I won't be back. read more

Love going to this place. They always have the best selection of treats and dog toys. I also found out recently that they support local breeders. And if your fish accidentally have babies, they will take them off your hands for you. Not sure why people are slandering the place with negative reviews - if you have issues with the rabbits please go to the store and speak with someone in charge instead of sitting behind your computer and saying nasty things about a fantastic organization! They actually help place animals that are rescued from local kill-shelters and are an amazing asset to the community! If I could give this place less then one star, I would. While I cannot speak for the Guinea Pigs and other animals there, I do know quite a bit of information about rabbits. About 5 rabbits were crammed into one tiny cage together. The cages were too small for even one rabbit, definitely too small for 5 baby rabbits that need lots of chances to play. The floor of the cage was wire and they used pine shaving bedding. This will lead to serious medical problems for the poor bunnies later in life, such as sore hocks and respiratory diseases. Not only that, they sell the bunnies at an extremely young age without being spayed/neutered or given proper vaccinations. Yes, rabbits need vaccinations. The rabbits were on an all-pellet diet, which causes their teeth to grow too far and will result in cuts in their nose and roof of their mouth. It is so upsetting that they "care" for their animals this way. When I went, there was a rescue rabbit in a cage of her own, slightly better off than the others. They claimed she was in good health. They said they had trimmed her teeth a week before. They said toys would prevent them from getting longer. We adopted her, and gave her toys and hay. A couple weeks later we took her to the vet for a check-up, and the vet informed us she had a genetic disorder that made her teeth grow faster than other rabbits, and that it is a very apparent issue that the staff should have recognized. The surgeries she needed would have cost a thousand dollars. We called Pickering Valley Feed & Farm to discuss our options. Even though they offered to trim her teeth for us before, they now informed us they would not and weren't even supposed to the first time. After several more phone conversations, they offered to refund us for the cost of the bunny, only if we returned it to them. We were out all money we spent on food and supplies (from them), and vet bills. All this could have been avoided if Pickering Valley Feed & Farm actually cared for their animals and their customers. read more

I love this place with all my heart. The prices are reasonable for my guinea pigs food, hay and bedding. Every time I go in there, they are very friendly towards me and helpful. I got my baby guinea pig from there (she's a peruvian) and she's wonderful. The vet told me that as a baby,she was extremely friendly and gentle (usually baby pigs are squirmy) and she said it's probably because of how the farm raised her. At the store, you can take out the animals and play with them before you decide to buy, and I love that about this store. It's an hour away from me, but I drive the distance as it's worth it. Next time I adopt a guinea pig, I will be coming here! read more

I run a small farm animal rescue I house a variety of dogs, farm animals & poultry. I am very picky about the care my animals receive. Pickering Valley has been a great resource for me. They have a huge variety of foods/supplies for my little farm and are happy to order anything I need. I was happy to be able to take a course at PVFF on farm animals care. It was a great help when I was first starting out. They answer my many questions and have experts to help with animal husbandry. I have shopped at PVFF every week for 9 years and I have always received great products and services. I have purchased many chicks and 2 healthy happy Flemish Giant rabbits from them , all were in great health. My son purchased a kitten , hamster and 2 guinea pigs from PVFF all were healthy well adjusted animals. I find the staff to be kind and compassionate to the animals. Many of the staff take home unwanted pets. Some of the reviewers said rabbits were suffering from heat stroke in their cages. She also said rabbits were panting. The reviewer obviously doesn't know anything about rabbits. They DO NOT sweat or pant. This is ridiculous the store is air conditioned cages are clean and the animals have a variety of foods. None of the chickens/ducks I have purchased form them have ever been sick. I am thrilled to have PVFF in the neighborhood . I can't understand why someone would want to say nasty things. If you have concerns speak to them don't trump up accusations on line. read more

Poor communication and extremely unprofessional management - After ordering chicks in mid-March, I received an email confirmation that my chicks were ready to be picked up on Friday. Store policy states chicks are held on reserve for 3 days before the reserve is released to the public. Due to my current work schedule, along with volunteering to pick up and transport a puppy mill dog (I also volunteer/foster for a rescue), I was not able to travel to the store until Sunday. The girl behind the counter said the birds were put up for public sale at 3pm (48hrs after the email was sent). She then got Tom, who I presume is the manager. I waited while he milled around looking for my order. He then told me that my birds were not there. I asked why, since they had been put on reserve, and I had received a confirmation email for pick-up. I was then told that the reserve means first come, first serve to all of the people who reserved (i.e. your reserve doesn't mean your birds are actually reserved for you). When I explained that I had just driven 50 minutes one way to now find that what I had been told wasn't true, Tom's response was to 1) blame the hatcheries for having trouble filling orders, 2) ask me if I was aware a pandemic was going on (which didn't affect the hatch rate of the birds), and then 3) tell me "I don't know what to tell you, you waited until the store is closing to come in" (it was 4:35 and they close at 5). I explained that some people are still working, and noted that I would understand if my birds had not arrived due to hatchery issues, but that the communication from his staff stated that they had. He did not want to hear that there was any issue with the mis-information/mis-communication in their current system. I had also emailed twice without getting any replies back. In our discussion, had he acknowledged the poor communication, and/or offered an apology for wasting my time and money traveling, it would have been fine. Instead however, he kept refusing to accept any responsibility, became even more indignant, and told me that he was "done" and to "get out of my store" before turning his heel and walking away. It was an incredibly immature and entirely unprofessional response for a manager/business owner to make to a customer who had just traveled a great distance to support their store only to find out it was nothing nothing but a waste of time and hard-earned money. Needless to say, I will no longer recommend Pickering Valley Feed to the many people I interact with who keep birds and other animals. There are far too many other small businesses who actually appreciate their customers to be treated like trash the way this one just did. read more

Just bought a kitten from them today. Kitten is very sweet and I'm happy to have him. But when I got him home I noticed that he is covered in fleas and that makes me think he might have worms. I called the store, and their response was to bring him back. Luckily I work with animals and I know how to take care of fleas on a young kitten. When I expressed my concerns I was told by the employee. "Well we just got the kittens in not that long ago so I guess they weren't checked well. And you really only spent 25 dollars on it so there's not much I can do." Not only is that sort of attitude completely unacceptable and rude, but it's disheartening to know that those kind of people work with living creatures. We bought our kitten from here and she was in terrible shape. She was malnourished, has a respiratory infection, filthy, had ear mites, fleas, and WORMS. I took her to the vet immediately after we got her. I have another cat and know how to properly care for animals. DO NOT buy animals here unless you're prepared for that. You're better off picking up a feral cat off the street. read more
