Rows of cases and tons of shelves. Everything from very smalls and jewelry up to large furniture. This was our second stop after Rusty Farm Girls Primitives and right then we decided the trip to Walnut from the Des Moines IA metro had been worth it. We've driven a lot further for a lot less. The woman working the counter here was very friendly and willing to work a little on prices if we were serious about it. One of the few places where that offer was extended... I would have loved to have taken that HUGE bell just inside of the front door home with me... If only I'd had a spare $1,250.00 in my account. Unfortunately the amount of flex up and down we both could do wasn't going to get us in the ballpark. We were greeted right away when we walked in. A soft spoken older woman behind the counter who I assume was the owner. We were on our way home to the Des Moines IA metro after spending a few days in Lincoln and Omaha NE. There is a TON or stuff here! Two floors. Everything from higher end items to rough, crusty, and dusty. Lots of smalls to some larger items. I walked out with a couple of piano shaped tricket boxes and cocktail shaker. My girlfriend picked up a couple bracelets. Two things I should probably mention... There was a little standing water in the basement/bottom floor over by the glassware. Not enough that the place smelled musty or that it impacted any of the merchandise. It's an older building. It happens. Just be aware. The second thing. Cash only. There is an ATM nearby if you need it. Bear Trap Antiques is definitely worth a stop if you are in Walnut!

Our parking spot was right outside of Rusty Farm Girls Primitives which made it the logical choice for our first stop Rusty Farm Girls Primitives is a nice little shop with a mix of mostly vintage and few new items. Some neat commercial items... Like the collection of sewing machines I snapped a picture of. We were greeted right away when we walked in and we found ourselves browsing both the upper and lower levels. Well laid out...the varied selection of items here is pretty cool. A great first stop on our tour of Walnut's antique shops!

There is a $5 tour of the windmill too. Plenty of parking, a cute park immediately south, and downtown Elk Horn a walk to the north. Located less than 10 minutes north of I-80. Cap this visit off with a stop at The Kringleman Pastry Shop two blocks north, and you'll fully immerse yourself in Danish culture.

Beside the windmill, the grounds include a Danish Viking smithy and home along with historic Viking information and milling information. There is also a tiny church moved here after being donated by the builders family. Models of Danish homes created by a man in MA who based them on the Danish village his grandparents lived in are on display behind the building in a small fenced area. A bust to Hans Christian Andersen is in their lovely garden area and picnic tables are under the trees near the Viking home. Community bulletin boards are near their private dirt parking lot. The gift shop has so many treasures! Be sure to sign the guest book. At the time of this review, tariffs on goods imported from Europe have increased some prices, but there are plenty of Danish kitchen items, holiday decor, candles, mugs, wonderful toys, candy, mead, glassware and on and on. Definitely plan time to wander around. Purchases support mill upkeep and restoration. The gift shop also serves as an Iowa tourist information point where you will find brochures of other Iowa sights. Very clean restrooms at the back of the gift shop. The windmill is just six minutes south of the Little Mermaid Fountain which is another stop worth seeing. Happy motoring!
