I have enjoyed all the many restaurants, and all the boutique shops every time I am in the area. I make it a point to come down at least once a week. Some of my favorite places are in the tree lined street downtown. There is ample parking in lots and also along the streets. There are also so many things to do! If you want to paint pottery or make candles or have a paint and wine night or go to trivia or an escape room! All followed by some delicious food. There are festivals all the time, as well as farmers markets and parades galore. It reminds me of the small-town areas you see in movies. Let's all keep downtown thriving!!

I was very excited to go to the Freedom Balloon Festival for the first time this year! We wanted…read morethe tethered balloon experience so we woke up at 5:30 and drove 40 minutes to get to Fuquay by 6:30! We parked about a mile away to avoid paying for parking. People were charging $10!! (Come on, this isn't the state fair) When we almost got to the park, directions were a bit unclear. We decided to just follow the crowd and we somehow ended up inside. When we got inside, again, things were unclear. We went early for the tethered experience and we couldn't find any balloons. Finally, we found one and we walked over there. It seemed like they were having issues with getting just one up. After waiting around 20+ minutes, we asked someone and was told that due to the weather, no balloons are flying. But she saw there were people in line to get the tickets for tethered balloon ride. We walked to the direction she told us but no one and no balloons were there. No one at that early of an hour were able to help us. We ended up just walking around. Since it was early in the morning, 90% of the vendors were unavailable. We waited 1.5 hours for the Disc Connected K-9 Frisbee Dogs. We enjoyed the dogs catching frisbees and hearing about their stories. All dogs with them were rescued, adopted, or fostered. Great show and great dogs. I think I would've had more fun had went in the evening with more vendors open. The only reason why we went early was for the tethered balloon ride since they only scheduled to do it either at 6:30am or 6:40pm. It would've been nice for them to post something on their website or Facebook page. I was quite disappointed. To Be fair, it did state on the website, weather pending but they didn't say what the appropriate weather would be. Other than the frisbee dogs, there were absolutely no activity available for people who came early. Maybe next year, I'll have better luck.

The balloons were an awesome sight, especially the night time glow. The pilots and crew were friendly and informative. Great selection of food trucks at decent prices without ridiculous long lines. Two local breweries were selling cold beers for $5 each. The Fainting Goat (who we met) and Bombshell Brewery. Bring your bag chairs and hang out by the stage and enjoy the bands. Visit the vendors and if you bring the kiddos, there are plenty of activities for them too. We paid to park in a person's front yard for $10 and we were right by the park. My advice is arrive early on Friday--we got there about 4pm and plenty to do staying through the evening glow. Just be warned--balloons in flight depend on the weather and not just what's happening on the ground, but higher up. So be prepared that there's no guarantee on times and activities of the balloons. We lucked out--hope you do too!

There are over 20 Masonic lodges that are competing for a win for best bbq and sauce. The tickets are only $20 and you cannot eat as much bbq as your soul desires. I look at this festival as a prequel to the state fair that is held in October.

I went to the sip and shop area where you can get an alcoholic drink and wander around. I got to sample so many amazing local foods, sauces, and sweets. I walked out of that place work so much stuff! Then the agriculture center has livestock and learning experiences for the little ones. This festival is definitely a must try if you've never been!

Experience: We had the best day at the state fair! I hadn't been to one since I was young in different states, but it had so much to offer, we were thrilled. I didn't expect the live music and beautiful country aesthetic. We started out walking around the mill area and the waterfront, and tried a frozen and hot apple cider and both were delicious. Then we walked and saw a ton of livestock and beautiful award winning gardens. We sampled crazy foods along the way that I've added in my pics from fried watermelon to pork belly churros. We ran around taking tons of pics of the rides and people watched until the sun went down and the fireworks began. Our hotel was in walking distance, and we were exhausted after walking for about 8 hours that day. I surprisingly didn't even gain weight from all the naughty food since we walked it all off. I can't wait to go back in the future, the NC state fair is the best!

Friendly drivers. We got dropped at the gate- then enjoyed ourselves- We didn't ride any rides - way too expensive (giant slide $7) unbelievable. In keeping with my string of world's largest, Duplin Winery, in Rose Hill, NC, is the World's…read morebest-selling muscadine winery and the oldest winery in North Carolina. It opened back in 1972 and has been family-owned for three generations. Their wines are typically made from muscadine and scuppernong grapes. I learned that they also carry Mothervine Wine, which comes from clippings of the 400-year-old vine in Roanoke Island. Duplin Winery was allowed to take clippings from this Mother Vine and established a new vineyard. Legend suggests the vine may have been planted by Croatan Native Americans or settlers of the Lost Colony. Scuppernong grapes are a white muscadine variety that is North Carolina's official state fruit. Duplin Winery is also known as the winery of the South. There is a large parking lot. The building's exterior looks rustic. Inside, you will be greeted when you enter the door. Remember to get your basket or cart, as it is difficult to carry items without one. The first room has the wines and food products. They had a section for sampling the dips, salsas, crackers and other items. The other room has the wine tasting and gift shop. Then, beyond that, there is the Bistro. I was delighted to find non-alcoholic wines. They offered Muscadine cider, Scuppernong (white), and Muscadine (red). I left with all three. While I didn't get to try the specific Mothervine wine, I did get to try the Alcohol-Free Scuppernong at the Bistro, which features the same historic state fruit variety that made the Mother Vine famous! The gift shop has items to find those perfect gifts or just something for yourself. From the rustic charm to the friendly greeting at the door, Duplin Winery truly lives up to its reputation as the 'Winery of the South.' It's a great stop for the history, the gifts, and the delicious sweet treats.
