Appropriately it is located on the Marc-Aurel-Straße(Marcus Aurelius Street) ... because Marcus Aurelius was the thoughtful "Philosopher Roman Emperor" who lived and died in Vienna right near where this bookstore presently stands. A very nice, relaxed place to have a drink and some café, non-wienersnitzel, food. I had the fish'n chips. Yes. Not battered fish mind you, but breaded - but hey, only brits know how to do battered fish anyway. The IPA was good, as was the draft beer. Not that I had both on one visit, mind you. Had heavy science conference to go to, out at the VIC. Can't be drunk in charge of a laser pointer out there! The first lunch-time visit, just after arriving by plane, and reaching Schwedenplatz by the airport bus, I saw a one-legged football match on the big screen with a young set of newly-weds having a careful drink. The second time, on my last day, I sat in the leather sofa and took notes for a story about time-travel. Same waiter. Cool guy. Short sentences. Perfect service. Tip him well. He nods sagely. Pickwick's is an international bar, more an Irish one situated int he 1st district of Vienna. Close to Stephansplatz, thus can be esily reached. The place needs renovation and some cleaning!!! As far as it concerns me, an Irish pub should look like a pub, thisis more like a coffee shop with Retro look, lots of bookshelfs, a monthly flee market and weekly events (Latin American music, Karaoke nights, quiz nights and live music with DJs). Some fellow CELTA graduates (ESL teachers) talked this place up for months, and we finally met there one afternoon last summer. While it's pretty cool, it didn't quite live up to the hype for me. For people trying to learn or practice English, or looking for English books or media, it seems to have a lot to offer, and it's a very interesting cafe. The inside is a bit like a divey/hipster living room - mostly comfortable with shabby couches and armchairs, and also some "normal" tables and chairs, and desks (if I recall correctly). The interior is a bit too dark for my tastes (not so much light coming in through the windows), but otherwise it has a nice, library-like ambiance. Another reviewer mentioned the slow service, and I couldn't agree more with her! It's REALLY slow. And the prices are definitely exorbitant for what you get. I have a "melange scale" for Vienna (kind of like the "Big Mac" scale to compare worldwide food prices, or IKEA "Billy" scale for worldwide furniture prices), and this place ranks high up on the melange scale, meaning, its melange is overpriced. (The average price for a melange/cappuccino is around €2,80 - more than that and I usually begin to consider a place to be pricey.) Their outside seating area in the warmer months is on a little elevated deck, and I found the service to be better when we were sitting out there. This place is definitely worth a visit, maybe a few visits even, but I'm going to echo the other reviewer and suggest that you don't go hungry for more than a snack (or super thirsty, either), unless you've got money to burn on mediocre food. And as for the coffee: it was okay. Not burnt, so better than that served by most Viennese YOTCH (Yea Old Traditional Coffee Houses). read more

Pickwick is my go-to place when any of my girlfriends tell me they just want to "relax and talk". Which means I've taken pretty much everyone there. Environment/Attitude: Its themed to look like the inside of a study hall/library, and the waiters have the same attitude as one of those grumpy librarians for the most part. They do all seem to be foreigners who speak English, and they hate it if you seat yourself. Last time I asked one lady if we could just sit down (I had already learned my lesson), and that apparently the other waiter wasn't happy about it because for 3 hours he didn't even looked our way. We didn't have a thing to drink and that didn't bother us at all. We just blended in during the day with the hipsters curled up on the couches with their books or computers, studying or watching a movie and at night, when the beer and cell phones came out. Also, don't expect to meet people here. They don't seem to talk across tables to each other. And seating may be tricky because its quite often crowded. Menu: Your menu is also in English (if its not, request it, maybe they just hear me speaking it before). Too expensive for what it is. Turkey cranberry sandwich at 7.50 Euros leaves a lot to desire. Tea I think goes for 3 Euros also, a cookie for 4 euros or the such.... I mean sure its a big cookie, but gees. Bathroom: Oh the bathrooms. Do they not realize how confusing it is? Ladies, the door you want to go into I think is the one that has a A4 sized Sex and the City poster on it. Up the stairs, to the left, down the hall and to the right (last one I think). Its just one toilet room. Sounds complicated? Thank me later. Overall: Don't go hungry or thirsty and you'll be fine. read more

Pickwicks is one of the best bars in vienna. I was there twice. I liked it. Nice people, good atmosphere and i like the flair of the bookshelfs. Its the perfect place for drinking and talking with a bunch of friends for having a good time. A must-go! read more

I often go to Pickwick's when i need to meet someone and have a drink. I really like it there and i find it a great atmosphere. Maybe because it is all in English. I always meet cool Austrians who speak outstandingly good English, as they have lived in England or the USA most often. I know this as i ALWAYS ask. I love their big book shelves! The atmosphere has always been very laid back; the music isn't too loud so you don't need to shout to be heard yet you can still hear it if you liked. People who go there seem to happy chappies too and if not being that big fan if the books downstairs offers a whole different world with the films. Probably best place in vienna for light food and great drinks

The staff are rude and unfriendly and the music is louder than it supposed to be in a Café.

Been wanting to try Pickwick's for awhile now and I am glad I did. The place is great for a meetup for drinks or to catch a game on the big screen, which was what a group of drunk men were doing in the middle of the day. This didn't make for great entertainment and they were quite loud, but I will give the place the benefit of the doubt and hope it is not like that always. As for the cheese burger and fries that I tried, this is the main reason I am only giving 3 stars. I could tell that the meat was precooked and then re-heated due to the short time it took to bring us our food and the fact that it was extremely hot and cooked through. Not a fan of this. It was also over salted as were the fries. It was stacked so high that I had to cut it in half to eat and the sloopiness of the ketchup and mayo made for some sticky fingers in the end. Check that one off the "heard they had the best burgers in town" list. read more

I worked here more than 10 years ago when it was a small video store and dvds were just getting popular. I can't believe how much its changed - but it seems to have got bigger and better. Next time I'm in Wien I'll be popping by to have a look at what's changed. read more
