I rang in the new year here with great friends and my favorite band, doesn't get any better than that. Staff is nice There is an upstairs bar and 2 downstairs bars. They do have a coat check that if I remember correctly is about 2 or 3 euros. It's a pretty small venue/club so for the most part you have a great view of whoever you are seeing. Which is also the biggest downfall, it's crazy hot in there when it's that packed. During new years eve we felt like sardines. Once the front door opens you are walked in to show your ticket, then check in your coat then you are allowed to the area where the bar is at. There are two other large doors that lead to the actual club, but depending on the event they could be open or closed. Upstairs is usually VIP, which is great because you can sit and chill upstairs with the bar up there. Over the years Finland's biggest bands such as HIM, Hanoi Rocks, PMMP, The Rasmus, Von Hertzen Brothers, The 69 Eyes, Nightwishas well as international several international stars like Nick Cave, Hurriganes and Gary Clark Jr. have rocked Tavastia's stage. With a capacity of just around 700 people manages to give gigs even with big stars an intimate atmosphere. This summer, most of the trendy sea side places seem to be on the other side of town (Hernesaari), but this one has all the charm. The place is cosy and relaxed, the bar tender was funny and helpful (we even saw him serving tables which seems to be unheard of in Finland!!), and the view over the old harbour with wooden schooners was pretty by the sunset. The place had also selected their drinks carefully to display a great variety of Finnish specialties. To our surprise, they even serve Sandels and Iisalmi IPA beers on tap! For those who don't know, they come from a Finnish owned brewery from the Savo-region - worth tasting!

Located in Annankatu it is easy to reach from anywhere in the city center. Upstairs you can hang out with your friends and a cold beer from the tap. Bar Loose has good after work offers every day till 2 minutes before midnight. Later you can go downstairs for one (or two) or their regular gigs. It is quite easy to become homesick but Bar Base makes me feel like a little piece of San Francisco has been teleported to Helsinki. Did I mention the bartenders are really great at remembering what I drink regularly and don't even have to ask- this is bartending at it's best. Also- quite patient with this American Finnish resident who tries hard but always ends up speaking my own hybrid of Finglish. Love the wooden paneling and semi-creaky floors, the young and lively crowd, and the people who work here. Also- their drinks aren't outrageously expensive. Highly recommended on the following counts: value, service, charmingly semi-dive bar feel, and location. If I had to live in a bar, I'd probably bunk in the back room at Bar Base. Or on the terrace at Torni, but that's a different review. Someday my reviews will be written in Finnish ;) For now, I hope they're moderately helpful for English speakers :)

If that sounds interesting to you then you should visit Base today. You find the bar in Kalevankatu between Stockmann and Torni. They serve beer for a reasonable price (at least for the center of Helsinki). And they fill up your glass till the rim. Really good but it makes it tough to get back to your seat without spilling anything. All in all it's a nice place for a drink for a Saturday night. Have fun!
