Pike Place Chowder was one of those places that immediately lived up to its reputation. The line was long on arrival, but it moved surprisingly quickly, and the staff kept things organized and efficient. I ordered the New England clam chowder, and it was easy to see why it's so popular. The chowder was rich and creamy, comforting and well-seasoned without being too heavy. Despite how busy it was, the whole experience felt smooth from start to finish.

Wonderful, but busy little spot! The entrance took up a moment to find because of its location on Post Alley, but the more incredible thing was the almost 50 foot line going up post alley! Don't get discouraged though, it moved very quickly and because of their seating policy, finding seating is easier than you think! (no reserving or holding tables) The chowder was amazing but to try the most i recommend the sampler. The lobster rolls were succulent and perfect and the chowder was delicious, it's just about finding your flavor. Lovely place to sit outside for a bit and enjoy the sunny days.

tl;dr the New England-style chowder is well-executed and delicious; the price is slightly less palatable Seattle is a seafood-centric city, and you can be sure to find excellent renditions of everything from omakase to oysters. When it comes to clam chowder, one of the most popular places is Pike Place Chowder. This soup-centric operation opened in 2003, crafting locally sourced ingredients into small-batch chowders. Over the years, their signature New England-style clam chowder has garnered plenty of accolades at national chowder competitions, even earning recognition as Yelp's Most Popular Dish in America in 2018. Nowadays, tourists queue for hours for the chance to sample the uber-popular soup. The original location in Pike Place is tucked away on Post Alley, a block off the Market proper. Follow the line trailing down the block to the forest-green garage door entrance. The diminutive dining room is heavily decorated with countless Chowdafest awards. A handful of green metal chairs are pressed up to linoleum tables inside and on the adjacent patios, while black stools line the tiled bar counter. Explore further back in the sprawling building complex to find the dedicated PPC takeout window, where employees shout out orders for a crowd of grab-and-go customers. My fiancee and I visited right at opening, and, rather than face the hours-long line, we ordered takeout online. We opted for a small serving of the New England Clam Chowder, and our order was ready in a matter of minutes. The chowder was thick, creamy, and rich, and the clam component was briny without feeling fishy. The accompanying crispy oyster crackers and chewy thick-cut sourdough added some exciting texture. The small bowl costed an eyebrow-raising $10, and it was mild-to-moderately filling. While overpriced and certainly not worth an hours-long queue, takeout PPC chowder is the perfect pick-me-up for the oft-gloomy Seattle day.

Food: New England Clam Chowder in sourdough bread bowl (8/10) - very filling and shareable! i love the taste of sourdough bread and it wasn't a hard bread or anything either. it was decently fresh. the order came out HOT but pretty quick as well. i like how the soup isn't just mostly broth either. there's a decent amount of bits inside such as clam and veggies. Service: Pretty straightforward, quick, and helpful at the front register. They bring out the food at a decent pace as well despite the long lines Ambiance: Super busy and every table and seat is taken. The line will wrap around but moves at a decent pace. Very busy atmosphere! The store itself is small and very limited seating.

No exaggeration. The tastiest clam chowder served piping hot! There is a crazy line for a reason - it is that good! We also ordered the dunguness crab roll. the soft buttery roll is filled with JuST crab. we bought a couple frozen to take home with us because it was that good. Lines move quickly!

Classic - excellent . Crab/chorizo okay. Seafood bisque-fav. Manhattan - too sour not good.

We likes the classic New England chowder and seafood bisque. Okay on the chorizo one. Manhattan no go. Wait was not too bad even though line wrapped around

Every once in a while, I brave the traffic and tourist crowd to satisfy my chowder craving at Pike Place Chowder at the famous Pike Place market in Seattle downtown. Pick a rare sunny day to go because there is going to be an uncovered long line out the tiny restaurant. They've got a variety of award winning seafood chowders to choose from, or you can get a sampler mix if you really can't decide. My favorite is the classic clam chowder, and as someone who has lived in Boston for a couple of years, I've had my fair share of good clam chowders. The other must order item is their lobster roll, again, one of the very best in the area where they truly don't skimp on the deliciously juicy plump fresh lobster pieces. While its customers are 95% tourists, but as a local, I give it a huge stamp of approval.

The Baseline: For a seafood fast casual restaurant the fish/seafood needs to be fresh, the presentation of the food should be comforting and respect the delicacy of the seafood, and there must be a selection of accompanying offerings. Food: Like the sign says you come here for the chowder. We had a a great Connecticut style lobster roll (5 star) which had nice warm bread with a chilled lobster filling. The bread was soft and served as a great vessel for the delicious lobster. The Connecticut style crab roll (5 star) was also great and if you gave me this over the lobster version I would not be mad at you. The Bread bowl of Market style chowder was a superior chowder with lobster, crab, and clams mixed into a succulent creamy chowder bisque. The 8-cup Sampler of chowders was definitely the star to me but not everyone of the chowders was a winner. Here is my review worst to best: Lime & Coconut Chowder (2 star) - if you love Indian spice flavors get this. If you want a traditional chowder then avoid this. Manhattan Clam Chowder (3 star) - Tomato base was very flavorful and the clams were abundant. The salt was also abundant and was mid to my taste that day. Crab and Oyster with Chorizo (3 star) - This may have been my taste for the day but I wasn't gelling with the chorizo and oyster flavors and I felt the clam got lost in that battle of flavors. Salmon Chowder (4 star) - Disclaimer: I am not a salmon fan. That being said I really did like this chowder for the most part. Seafood Bisque (4 star) - An Amalgam of seafood flavor that works well together in the creamy bisque. Recommended. Market Chowder (5 star) - This chowder had a great mix of Lobster, crab, and clam. Creamy, well seasoned, and filling. Worth to order if you are getting a smaller sampler. New England Clam Chowder (5 star) - If you need a baseline to judge then you judge for the basic. This was a creamy, clammy, chowder and how you should judge the rest by. Seared Scallop Chowder (5 star) - My personal favorite because the sweet scallop meat that mixed with the Lucious chowder base. It would be my go to if i could eat here regularly. Service: Fast, efficient, and friendly. One of my party pulled a change of preparation audible and the staff ran with it. Cannot complain especially how they have to handle the volume of people coming through. Ambiance: This small restaurant is located in the Pike Place Market side alley area and had indoor and patio seating. We were 2nd in line and were able to get seating in the patio. The sea breezes still found a way to make it through and it was an enjoyable place to eat.

You simply can't visit Seattle and skip Pike Place Chowder. The clam chowder lives up to the hype: rich, creamy, loaded with clams, and absolutely delicious. There's usually a line, but it's one of those places that's actually worth the wait. I also tried the lobster roll. It was good and packed with lobster, but honestly, it wasn't the best lobster roll I've had. The chowder is the real star here and the reason I'd keep coming back. If it's your first time in Seattle, this place should be on your must-visit list.

WuzupWuzup!! Busy, overcrowded, and overwhelming, but worth it. Place was on my to do list visiting Seattle. The sampler was the best way to go on trying different Chowder, I will say for sure that the vegan one surprised me the most and was tasty in flavor. It reminded me of an green curry, bet it would pair well with some rice. Prices are good, seating can be tricky at times but seats opening fairly quickly. I'd definitely recommend this place out for anyone looking to experience some chowder.

The hubby at our little table happy as a literal clam. Line behind him.

My husband's coworker let us in on the HYPE surrounding Pike Place Chowder and I'm so glad he did! While my hubby was telling me bits and pieces of why we should listen to his pals advice, I have to admit I was wondering "how great can chowder be?" And "won't every spot here have chowder on the menu?" Welll....what we experienced (and our tastebuds verified) here, was NEXT LEVEL! Award winning, piping hot, loaded with seafood, creamy goodness. The menu is decently simple, yet very hard to choose from all the yummy options. We went classic with their most famous chowder, the New England chowder and the Connecticut style lobster roll. We also purchased a strawberry lemonade and had our chowder in a bread bowl. My last minute add-on was a small scallop chowder. I was very tempted to do the chowder sampler, but I'm happy we didn't because our meal was very filling!! Once the chowder hit the table, it was gone pretty quickly the clam chowder had delicious notes of Smokey bacon, many bits of clam, and the creaminess of potato. The way it soaked into the bread bowl was heavenly. You MUST do it. I was more of a fan personally of the scallop chowder, up to the brim with chopped scallop meat and plenty of dill. It was a refreshing, but still decadent chowder option. The lobster roll was absolutely delicious. The butter was melting off into our hands!! I ordered the roll with 1/4 oz of lobster, but they also had one with 1/2 oz of meat! Wow, I'm hungry again just writing this. The Housemade strawberry lemonade was a perfect match. If you have any doubt about where you'd like to eat while in Seattle, this is your spot. The line was truly not that bad and in our experience, a lot of lines are totally worth it for delicious famous food foods and this was no exception. While the restaurant itself is small, people tend to eat quickly and come and go so we were able to snag a table, plenty of people also sit at the bar. The kitchen went so smoothly and you pick up your food. The second you order it! Fresh and convenient! They also ship and offer travel options for their famous concoctions!

Was wondering what the hype is. There's a line around the corner leading into the restaurant. I joined the line until one of the workers told us we can order online if we do not need a table and then you'll be pinged about 5mins later to go into the restaurant to pick up the order. Terrific. We did just that. There was a little wait for the to go order. We did the 4 top chowders so we can enjoy the variety. The restaurant was busy but it's memorial weekend Saturday so lots of ppl in the area. We found a spot to opened it all up. It came with some slices of sourdough bread, crackers. Great flavors. The original chowder is always the best. But we enjoy the other 3 flavors as well. So glad we got the variety

    New England Clam Chowda
    Frank B.

OK, love love love the Chowda at Pike Place Chowder. It's a savory bowl when your in the dead of a Seattle cold spell which is most of the year yet a bowl can supercharge your body instantly.. Frank don't mess around with the gourmet options I just get the straight OG style from New England, the white clam chowder. I'll splash with salt & pepper and add some oyster crackers and I'm ready to consume.... Now I stay away during tourist season due to long lines. But on a normal winter day I may experience a few person wait. The helpers get you ordered super fast and you're eating within 5 mins. Cause it's in the market you have a lot of space to find seating but can also experience a higher decibel levels than most dining places. But hello thats what gives Pike Place Chowder character...

Clam chowder was okay, but a bit salty this time. Maybe they've changed the recipe? It was not as good as I remember from 2 years ago.

Pike Place Chowder Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Pike Place Chowder

Is the fish fresh or frozen?

    Fresh!

Are they still requiring proof of vaccination?

    Nope! And no masks either!

Is the clam chowder fishy, as in a strong seafood taste and smell? Are the bits of clam large or small?

The clam chowder is amazing- creamy and thick with huge chunks of clams in every bite. Can't really smell the fishiness. Only smell the cream and potato, maybe a hint of seafood.

Is there gluten free clam chowder?

Yes! They have a couple of gluten free/ vegan chowders on the menu. Right now, they have Manhattan chowder (GF) plus Lime and coconut chowder (GF, Vegan).

Can you get the lobster roll without mayonnaise?

    Yes

Is there any dairy in the Manhattan chowder?

    Yes

Got back to the bay and missing this chowder already. Anyway to get it frozen and flown over?

Yes they ship for $35. Check out their website pikeplacechowder.com/order

I assume the lines are always long on a Sunday. Is Monday a better choice for a shorter wait time? Thanks!

Yes, it's not as busy on the weekdays but the line generally isn't the issue because it moves pretty quickly. It's finding a table to sit at because seats are limited and it's first come, first served seating.

Does the clam chowder have bacon in it? Can't have bacon.

They have several chowder options. I believe some (at least one) do and others don't. Workers are friendly and can help you with bacon free options.

    Adult & childrens menu?

I only saw one menu. You can get cup/small, bowl/ medium or larger. What we did is ordered two bowls and then ordered other stuff at another restaurant and shared the various items that we each picked near the waterfront.

    Gluten free options?

Manhattan and Lime & Coconut chowder are gluten free.

If I come in at 4:50 or 4:55 on a weekday (right before closing), will I still be served? Will I need to get my food to go?

Generally no. They tend to only make enough for that day and run out of most favors before the day ends.

How often do they change their Market Chowder selection?

The change the market chowder every couple of months.

We're taking our dad to his very first visit to SEA and will definitely visit this delicious and popular establishment for my dad to try. My question is..he's disabled so will there be a wheelchair-accessible seating?

Forget hitting the Pike Place market location, and instead go to the second location, which is on the top floor of the air-conditioned shopping mall called Pacific Center, complete with accessible seating, elevators and no line-up.

    Where do you park?

    Market Place Public Parking

What is the best time to visit so there's not such a long wait?

Hi Damaris! The line tends to be shorter right before we open or close, but if you're local, you have an even better option to skip the line. We just introduced our Grab & Go take-out program that allows you to order online and pick up anytime… Read more

    Is there indoor seating?

Yes, but there is more seating outside. You can also take your food & go to a public seating area in the market by making a right at a sign which reads "Sea View Cafe."

The staff is great. I had a few questions because I couldn't decide what to order, and everyone was friendly and helpful - I was even able to add corn flakes to my matcha soft serve (which isn't listed on the menu), so it was nice to know I could customize it to my liking! The matcha tiramisu was the best I've had, and the hojicha latte with oat milk was just right. The flavor was nice and strong without being overpowering. Everything I had here truly stood out! I liked the variety on the menu and all of the different options. - it's extensive and you could find anything for everyone. It's one of the more memorable matcha spots I've been to, and I'd definitely stop by again the next time I'm in Seattle. If you love matcha like I do, definitely add this place to your list. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Thankfully they are open today on the Fourth of July (they will just close a little earlier for the holiday), and I was happy to see that not much has changed since my last visit. Without even realizing it, I ended up ordering the exact same drink I got the first time: a Matcha Float with mochi. I guess you really can't go wrong with it because it's still just as creamy and satisfying as I remembered. The only tiny downside is that it only comes with three small mochi balls, so for almost $9 I wish there were a few more. However, the quality of the matcha is consistently excellent, sooo I don't regret coming back. They have wonderful customer service too! The employee helping me at the register was incredibly patient while I stood there trying to decide what to order. As an awkward introvert, I always feel a little flustered when ordering, but she never made me feel rushed or uncomfortable. She asked my sweetness preference for the Matcha Float, whether I wanted to dine in or take everything to go, and even carefully packed up my yuzu green tea packet with the rest of my order. She was very kind and thoughtful so just wanna say I really appreciate how welcoming she was. Even from my last Seattle visit two years ago, I still remember the employees being helpful and friendly here. I also have to recommend their desserts from my previous visit. (I skipped the sweets this time due to my budget but I still suggest picking up some of their sweets!). The Matcha Basque Cheesecake and the Matcha Tiramisu were both absolutely delicious, and I still remember how amazing they tasted even two years later. The tiramisu is only around $7 and is definitely worth trying if you're a matcha lover. This visit, I picked up their yuzu green tea packet to take home (last time, I got the hojicha). Each packet contains 15 individual tea bags and costs about $10 (not bad for how much tea is in each tea bag). They also sell matcha powder and other tea goodies. I'm looking forward to brewing the yuzu green tea at home since a good cup of hot tea is always comforting, especially when I'm sick (I've been recovering from a cold so tea has been a lifesaver to warm me up!). I actually stopped by for lunch since I didn't eat breakfast, and ordered the Sukiyaki Don (it was much more satisfying than I expected). I was craving a beef bowl and Nana's was one of the few places in the area within walking distance from my work, that was actually open for the holiday today, lucky me! It came with miso soup and a soft-boiled egg, and I was pleasantly surprised to find tofu and mushrooms in the bowl alongside the beef. It left me FULL, my tummy happy, heck yeah. Costs almost $20 but worth satisfying a craving. I won't lie.. I somehow managed to spend about $40 today between my meal, drink, and tea to take home. More than I intended to spend but no regrets, because everything was delicious and the quality has remained consistently high over the years. The only thing that made my visit a little uncomfortable wasn't the café itself. There were quite a few homeless individuals lingering around the front of the building, so I decided against dining out front like I had originally planned since I wanted to enjoy the nice weather, but one of them was panhandling me so I promptly left (thankfully I asked for my order to be packaged for takeout). That's obviously outside of the café's control, and it didn't affect the food or service at all. They still had many seats available inside but probably because it's the holiday. If I recall, the place was packed during the afternoon when I last visited on a weekday. I will still say that Nana's Green Tea continues to be one of my favorite matcha spots whenever I'm in Seattle. Between the consistently high-quality matcha, delicious meals and desserts, excellent selection of teas to bring home, and genuinely exemplary customer service, it's a place I'll happily keep returning to whenever I'm back in town and have the time to visit.

Frank don't mess around with the gourmet options I just get the straight OG style from New England, the white clam chowder. I'll splash with salt & pepper and add some oyster crackers and I'm ready to consume.... Now I stay away from Public Market location due to tourist long lines so I come to the Pacific Place location. A normal day I may experience a few person wait. The helpers get you ordered super fast and you're eating within 5 mins. Cause it's in the Pacific Place you have a lot of space to find seating. Unfortunately, our experience did not live up to the reputation. The clam chowder was just average. It wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't memorable or deserving of the accolades we had read about. The slice of sourdough bread served with it was extremely dry and tasted stale, which was disappointing given Seattle's reputation for great sourdough. We also ordered the cod fish and chips, and the fish tasted like frozen, pre-breaded cod rather than fresh fish. The coating was crispy; although, the fish did taste fresh. Overall, we left feeling that the restaurant was overrated. We had expected a standout meal based on its reputation, but instead found the food to be average at best. While the service was fine and the line moved efficiently, we wouldn't make a point to return or recommend it as a must-visit dining experience in Seattle.

However I decided to check it out since it's a lot closer to where I live and was craving some sushi. Their selection isn't as big as FOB's but it's still very generous. They have inari, rolls, and nigiri - they do limit the number of "expensive" nigiri you can get though which does kind of suck. I tried a few rolls and a few nigiri. They all tasted really fresh, and I like how they aren't as enormous and one-note tasting as FOB's. Everything tasted unique! This should do the job to satisfy the sushi cravings :)

This is a sushi by the pound place in SLU, but they also have a menu with variety of things such as udon, inari, chirashi, etc. The selection of fish you can choose from in the weigh your sushi section is not that big. They only have 2 high premium fishes available: otoro and amberjack. However you can only get 1 of each, which to me defeats the purpose. I also got a bulgogi inari and it was $5 / piece which is pricey. Another thing is that they use a lot of rice, too much rice. Service is ok, they ring you up and bring the food to you if you ordered through the menu. It's a very relaxing and chill area as well. The food we got was just ok but for the price, it's not worth it. I'm glad I tried but most likely will not be back.

However, we arrived just before 10p on a Monday night and the line was down the street. We waited an hour and ended up not getting in due to seating ending at 10:45p. The hostess would check in periodically, and up to the last 15 mins said we had a 50/50 shot of getting seated. The alternative was to get take-out. There were a couple other groups also in the same boat. Overall, the wait time after submitting our take-out order was around 15 mins for 2 ramen. We ordered the classic ramen, extra spicy, and I added an egg to mine. On the card you use to select your order, you can choose the type of noodle, richness of broth, spice level, add-ins, and beverages. There is a separate vegan menu with lots of options to choose from. The ramen was delicious. The broth was rich and full of flavor and the noodles were cooked just right. The meat was tender and egg was perfectly jammy. I get the hype, but I wouldn't go after 9p again for my own sanity and time.

We walked into a casual, compact space with a mix of counter and table seating that fits the quick ramen shop style. The interior is efficient and well organized, though it can get extremely busy, and the wait times are often one of the biggest parts of the experience, especially during peak hours. Once seated, the space feels functional and comfortable, designed around getting a bowl of ramen in front of you without unnecessary distractions. The ramen is built around rich tonkotsu broth with a lot of customization options. We appreciated the ability to adjust things like noodle firmness, richness, and spice level, which made each bowl feel more personalized. The regular tonkotsu ramen stood out for its deep umami flavor without feeling overly heavy, and the noodles had a great texture that held up well against the broth. The vegan options also stand out, including miso-based bowls with flavorful broths that give non-pork options more depth than many ramen shops offer. The toppings are generous, and the soft-boiled egg was cooked to that perfect jammy consistency. Beyond ramen, the menu has a few sides that complement the meal well, including gyoza that came out crisp and well filled. We also grabbed mochi ice cream for something sweet afterward, a light finish after the rich broth. The seasonal ramen options are worth checking out since they add variety beyond the standard bowls, giving regular visitors a reason to come back and try something new. Service is generally quick and friendly, especially considering how busy the restaurant gets. The ordering system is straightforward, and the staff handles the constant flow of customers efficiently. The team kept the pace moving without making the experience feel rushed, and they were attentive to refilling water and checking in on the table. The biggest downside is the popularity, since the lines can sometimes feel long for a relatively quick meal, but the wait tends to move faster than expected given the efficient turnover. Ramen Danbo is a reliable spot for a satisfying bowl of ramen in Seattle. The customizable bowls, strong broth, and consistent noodle quality make it a place worth visiting, although planning around busy hours can make the experience much better. The balance of customization and quality means you can dial in your bowl exactly how you like it, and the focused approach to the menu keeps the attention where it belongs.
