After an awful day on the road, I arrived at Nipigon dog-eared, late, and keen to get some kip. That bad luck of mine first led me to the Town and Country Inn. An establishment that I later discovered to be as reputable a source of accommodation as is standing in a septic field holding a tarp over your head. I followed my instinct to leave, and drove across the highway to the Timberwolf Inn. I don't know why things worked out for me this time so superlatively, as my usual course of luck should have found me me in a ditch with stab wounds. It didn't, and I'm grateful. Of course, trying to judge an establishment's pedigree at night is next to impossible, so in my sleep-deprived state, I entered the Timberwolf's entrance, and hoped for the best. Low-and-behold, what did I see? Evidence of a very recent and very thorough upgrade. The place was spotless, and fully modernized. I almost wept when I entered my room, as it was exquisite. Everywhere I looked, my eyes were greeted with perfection. Everything in the room was modern, and tastefully decorated. I slept like royalty in these magnificent surroundings, and thanked my lucky stars that for first time in my life, a decision that I made didn't turn into putrid nightmare. What a treasure of a place, and after having slept in a fair number of hotels/motels on this trip across Canada, the Timberwolf Inn was right at the top of the list. I can state unhesitatingly that I'd happily stay there again.

The place was empty but we were given the only room that had a giant patch of ice right outside the door that I nearly bailed on after arriving later in the evening. As soon as I walked in the door with a grungy old key with the plastic room number tag broken, I ripped the sleeve of my sweater on a nail that was sticking out of the door jamb as I came in. I had to hammer it in with a hanger! The sink, toilet and bathroom are updated and I guess that's why the owners think the price is warranted. The rest of the place just makes you feel really dirty and unclean. There were random hairs in the bedding so we opted to bring in our own to lay over top. Not sure how frequently the beds even get cleaned. It looks like a minimum amount of paint and 'updates' were done to call this renovated. You can tell these used to be smoking rooms but because all of the old furniture and tacky wall panelling wasn't ever replaced, you can still smell the smoke. If we hadn't been driving for 12 hours and it wasn't -45, we would never stay here. I'd say you're better off sleeping in the car or driving a little further to Marathon to have better options.

I wasn't about to spend 3 days here, but for a night as a stop off it ain't bad. Sort of like a 1960s cottage on the lake. To note, no wireless, no pool, no gym. It is clean though. You can walk down to the beach it is about 3 km. The girl working the desk said it was 10km- seems her ability to judge distance is not that developed. You can pull right up to the door. There appear to be another three motels in town. Schreiber is another option to stop but not as big. I paid 80 bucks with no reservation on a Monday. An hour after I got there they put up the No Vacancy.
