Walls graves and…read moreflowers The Acushnet Cemetery is a lovely 23 acre graveyard that was incorporated in 1881 but is actually much older. The original cemetery than was here dates back to around 1711 and the new one is just sort of an extension. The graveyard is fairly modest and doesn't have huge or imposing monuments. There are some small obelisks and lots of beautiful designs on the older stones. Many of the new graves are very well cared for and have lots of flowers and other tokens of affection. Unfortunately some of the stones have been toppled, hopefully by natural forces and age and not by some knucklehead intent on vandalism. Some of the really old ones, probably from the early part of the 18th century, are almost worn away by the years and elements. Acushnet Cemetery is a lovely and peaceful place with stone walls, interesting gravestones and beautiful flowers and plants. A great part of the history of the small town.

And this cemetery is maintained by very nice people. Everyone who works here that I have encountered or even watched I noticed how gentle and caring they are with the grounds. I've been coming here for as long as I can remember and I always remember just how clean everything always ways. I believe in order to bury your family member here they have to be Catholic, just something to keep in mind. Consider this cemetery for any passing family members. I know this is such a tough topic, and it was a little hard for me to write, but I know it will be worth it for others.

A lovely old…read morecemetery The Hillside Cemetery is located on an inlet of the Sakonnet River in the quaint old town of Tiverton, Rhode Island. A lovely place for a walk with distant views of the river and some nice rolling hills. The cemetery is quite huge with both new and very old parts. The oldest graves date back to the 18th century and of course there are others that look older but are now impossible to read. Lots of very cool and unique memorials and gravestones complete with unusual and archaic names and symbols. Some of the stones still look new and fresh while the softer stones are sometimes broken and worn down to virtually nothing. Hillside is a lovely old cemetery in a lovely old town. Many old graveyards have a spooky and morbid feel to them but not this one. I wouldn't exactly call it cheerful but it is a beautiful and historic area and a very nice place for a very peaceful stroll.

The grounds are in excellent condition, with winding paths, mature trees, and a quiet dignity that makes it easy to linger. The primary attraction for many tourists is Lizzie Borden's tomb, which is surprisingly simple to locate. Proceed directly down the central road from the main entrance on Prospect Street. A fork will appear after 200 yards or so; bear left and keep going until you come to a little rotary. Just off the road to the right is the Borden family plot; park close by and stroll toward it. Lizzie's stone is plain and level, bearing only her name: "Lizzie." Her parents and sister Emma are among the many Bordens buried there, and it's part of a wider family cluster. The cemetery itself is quiet. Historic without being overgrown. Solemn without feeling oppressive. The kind of place where memory feels tangible, especially when you're standing among the names that shaped one of America's most enduring mysteries. A haunting cemetery off a busy Main Street. It's on the National Register of Historic Places. Its…read moreproper name is the more antiquated "Burying Ground." Many of the gravestones have been lovingly restored, tho some have been lost to time and the elements. One can see tombstones with fascinating names like Jehiel Fish, Priscilla, Mrs. Thankful. It's a place for contemplation. People often relax on the benches out front. It's about two centuries old, and well-maintained. The historical society has been able to connect numbered graves with people's names. A place for history and contemplation.

Graves and poorhouses…read more The Methodist Society Graveyard was founded back in 1809 and is about one acre. Not a big cemetery but one that seems more spacious that the average 19th century graveyard because the graves aren't crushed together. Many of the older stones are getting difficult to read but I did see a couple from the 1820s. Most of the memorials are simple with only a couple of larger and more elaborate ones. The Falmouth Poorhouse was located near the old graveyard and most of the unfortunate people that lived and died there were buried with only a number on their grave. However some volunteers recently searched the old records and found names for many of the poorhouse deceased and placed a small memorial in their honor. Just a little graveyard that has a whole lot of history and memories. A simple cemetery that reflects the simple lives of the people of this area.

Bell graves and…read morecolonels The Union Cemetery is usually considered as part of the old Commons Graveyard right across the street. The two sort of merge into one and look quite similar. Lot of very old graves here, many dating back into the 1600's. Other s are just about gone, worn down to nubs that are impossible to read. This is a very cool graveyard with a whole lot of history. Fascinating going around from grave to grave reading the inscriptions. The ancient town green is here too and the Commons Graveyard Is actually right on the green. A cool old bell guards on side while a church is on the other. History and the feel of the past just permeates the entire area. Not a fancy cemetery with a lot of rich and opulent graves. Some pretty cool ones like a statue of a colonel and some small obelisks but all the markers and memorials blend together quite nicely with the ancient trees and wonderful old houses of the area. A graveyard that has been here for a long time. And I suspect one that will still be here long after I am gone.
