Cute little campsites. Has everything you need. With tall tall tall tall trees. Very green. We really enjoyed it here. It's perfect for families with kids and there are little playground areas to enjoy. The bathrooms were overrun and dirty so a head's up on that. The lakes and beach areas were cute and very kidsy for the little ones. I found the waters way too murky for my preference but if you love bullfrogs and lily pads in black water then this is the spot for you. I just can't do too much algae overload.

(This review is for the Fall Furnace Fest that takes place here annually at the end of October and by no means implies that this stuff is going on here daily.) We've got a thing for National Parks but every now and then when perving the reviews of my Yelp friends for ideas (Dan R. Holla!) I'll remember that yes indeed in PA we also have an awesome state park system with a website that is super easy to navigate so I decided to hit it up. When I did I found out about PGFSP and about the Fall Furnace Fest that happens there every October. Both sounded like Charlie Sheen type Winning! so we made the two hour trip to the badlands of Gardners Pennsylvania to see what the festival had to offer. Upon entering the grounds and getting our map & guide the first thing I noticed is that damn, this place is big but also damn, this festival really brings out a lot of people. Here's a basic idea of what's going on: - Free Parking - Free Shuttle Bus between different parts of the park on Saturday - Free musical entertainment - Free tours of the Ironmaster's Mansion - Free demonstrations pertaining to charcoal making, blacksmithing, antique tools, candle dipping, apple cider making, beekeeping, pumpkin carving, gourd painting, scarecrow making, hay rides and a Bird of Prey Program from a guy who works at Hershey Park with their Falconry Experience. That doesn't cover all of the craft and food vendors that are selling their wares or if you stick around until seven on Saturday night when you can take part in the Hairy Hand Pumpkin Float (that's too much to explain-Google it if you want more info). This park looks beautiful even without all of the hubbub going on and would be a great place to visit year round with lakes, camping, a small sandy beach and part of the Appalachian Trail cutting right through the park. We had a blast at the Fest and hopefully at the very least we'll be back next year if not sooner to enjoy everything that PGFSP has to offer.

My husband and I were in Carlisle, Pa visiting my sister in law and were looking for things to do with our nephews. We came across Pine Grove Fall Festival which was perfect for a Fall Saturday afternoon and Only 20 minutes away from town. For the kids: There was no cost to enter the fall Festival which was great since we weren't sure how long we were going to stay. Surprisingly there were plenty of things to do for the kids. Right when you walk in they had 2 stations set up for pumpkin carving and to make your own scarecrow. I loved how the kids were stuffing nude nylon stockings with hay and dressing them in donated cloths to create a real life scarecrow. The park also had complimentary hayrides that circled around log cabins located in the park. The owners of the log cabins decorated their home and yards making the ride a viewing pleasure for both the kids and adults. For the adults: The park has a beautiful trail that overlooks a lake. The views really allow you to enjoy this time of year since you are surrounded by trees changing color. Along the path many vendors have tables set up selling an array of items From baked goods to homemade decor. Even if you don't plan on making a purchase just walking around to view the merchandise is entertaining. The food: Now most importantly what is there to eat while you are enjoying the festival! When you first enter the park there are multiple food trucks offering various types of food. Naturally I spot local barbecue and all other options became a blur. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with fries from Redds Smokehouse. The fries were delicious... crispy, thin, perfectly salted. The pulled pork was good but not overly flavorful. The sauces made the sandwich. Redds offered various bbq sauces which is great if you love to dip like me. My favorite was the spicy bbq and once added the sandwich was great. The park also had homemade apple cider that they pressed right in front of you! Talk about fresh... we also purchased homemade kettle corn which was a great snack for the kids since they were able to munch while we spent time looking at the merchandise.

There is an Appalachian Trail Museum, and it is tradition for thru hikers to gorge themselves with ice cream at the general store!

Pine Grove Furnace State Parks is one of my favorite places to visit with my family. We love Laurel and Fuller Lake, especially when the fall foliage is on point. As an Appalachian Trail nerd, I love visiting the museum or seeing thru hikers get their ice cream fix at the general store. There are trails for people of all hiking levels. My sister and I prefer the views from Pole Steeple Vista. There are great picnic spots all around, and the park is surrounded by the beautiful Micheaux State Forest.

My friend and I at one of the look outs at the end of Pole Steeple trail.

This is an amazing place to relax and hiking. For those who love hiking, you will love Pole steeple trail! There are two awesome look outs at the end of Pole Steeple trail. I take my friends and family here all the time and everybody love it!

To get to the waterfall you have to walk a path that's about 10-15 minutes. Notably, the parking lot requires an advance reservation on peak dates, and this policy has been expanded to cover more dates due to the pandemic lockdown pushing people to spend their days outdoors. The trail is a short loop to the falls. Great Falls this isn't, but it's significant enough to generate a nice spray. A rather upset-looking fish flopped down shallow water as I approached. Upstream of the falls was a challenge. Few fords were viable, perhaps owing to heavy rain, and signs suggesting the area was blocked off were ignored by expeditions looking for better crossings. I made it across the stream and back, but I did get a little wet. The scenery isn't worth a long drive on its own, but paired with the other local park sites, it makes for good viewing, and in particular this space with its parking limitations can't get too crowded.

Food, crafts, live music, crowds, and enough traffic to require Park Rangers directing cars--definitely more than I bargained for, but sometimes that's half the fun. The mansion itself is a gorgeous 32-room stone villa perched on the mountaintop, built in 1908. On this day, the inside was open to wander through, though I admit I was a little disappointed to find vendor booths set up in many of the rooms. Not exactly ideal for soaking in the mansion's character or snapping quality photos, especially when another full field of vendors was set up right across the street. Still, it was cool to step inside and imagine what life here must have been like in the early 1900s--quiet, peaceful, with endless valley views. Speaking of views: the terrace overlook is the true star here. On this bright, cloudless day, with the leaves just beginning to turn, it was absolutely stunning. The terrace even had two velvet chairs and some pumpkins set up for a fun fall photo op. I spent the most time here, just taking in the sights and thinking about how many people have stood in that same spot over the last century. I also popped by the Education Center and wandered through the mansion garden (though the garden seemed like it could use a little love). All told, it was a fun stop that combined history, nature, and a little unexpected festival energy. I don't know that I need to go back, but it was definitely worth visiting once--and that view alone is bucket-list worthy.

In historic Downtown, museums and exhibits tell many sides of and dark memories around Harpers Ferry, including the John Brown Museum and John Brown's Fort, Black Voices: African American History, the Industry Museum, and period sites such as the Boarding House, Dry Goods Store, White Hall Tavern, and the Confectionery.
