You pretty much know all you need to know about PINK before you've even rounded the corner and laid eyes on the place, through the medium of Radio 1 being blasted out at high volume, which has always struck me as rather inappropriate - particularly in the North Laine. Surely if there is one place where the generic-ness of Radio 1 is inappropriate it would be here. I'm surprised there hasn't been a petition to have PINK's radio permanently retuned to the ailing 6 music... if there was such a petition I would certainly sign it. But I digress.
Once you have rounded the corner, PINK flaunts its wares on mannequins set up in the street and all up the building's frontage in all weathers, with the reserve and restraint of a street walker. Come to mention it, some of their clothes are rather whorish; teeny little studded stretch dresses, leggings with slashes all down the front, etc. It also sells lots of cheap t-shirts with sequinned slogans like 'I Heart Brighton', and jeans with more sequins on the pockets. Its obviously quite popular though, particularly with the groups of young international students that move around Brighton all together twittering and getting in your way, like giant flocks of starlings. I suspect the appeal is largely because it is very cheap, pains of jeans for £15, lace tops for a tenner, and so on. read more
