One colleague ordered the bandeja paisa which is a traditional Colombian dish that includes red beans, white rice, ground beef, chicharrón (fried pork belly), a fried egg, ripe plantain, arepa (cornbread), and sliced avocado.-- generous and authentic. Another colleague had the cazuela de mariscos (seafood soup), which was rich and flavorful. I went with the chicken soup, which was fantastic -- hearty, fresh, and perfectly seasoned. We also tried the empanadas (beef and chicken), which were crisp and delicious, paired with a great Colombian hot sauce. Everything came out fresh. I have been coming to Alicante for over 50 years. I was born and bred in the U.S. (except for about…read more5 years as a child when I started school in Spain and later 2 years after college when I also lived there). My entire family on my father's side lives in Alicante and my best friend of over 30 years lives there and is a big time foodie. I only write all of this to convey that I don't have the taste of a tourist who might be enthralled with the restaurant displaying the glossy photo of a paella and the "made for the masses" fare (which is fine if that's your thing, not knocking it). I grew up on Spanish food and I know what the real thing is supposed to taste like. First of all, this is not a "paella" place. This restaurant makes "arroces" (rices) which, while still cooked in a traditional paella pan, is not paella. There are a few differences, but chief among them is the proteins involved and the thickness of the final dish. A paella is typically cooked such that the rice is about a pinky finger's width of thickness across the entirety of the pan (although lots of places will cook them thicker which is not really a good idea). The arroces are cooked so thin that the rice doesn't even cover the whole pan. In some areas of the pan the arroz is literally one grain of rice thick. If you're looking for an actual paella Alicantina, this is not the place (although you should come here anyway). The arroces here are cooked in the traditional way over open fire (that you can see from the restaurant's interior) using "sarmiento" which is wood made from grapevines. The arroces are cooked hot and fast. They have a fixed price menu which includes an arroz (there are several to choose from, I always get the very traditional rabbit and snail arroz), and lots of plates to share. Although you won't leave hungry, you can ask for extra helpings of everything at no extra cost. The share plates are as outstanding as the arroz and include huevos rotos, a cheese and charcuterie board, pimientos de píquillo, tomato with egg and tuna, ensaladilla rusa de atún as well as dessert and coffee. If someone in your party does not want the arroz part of the meal, they offer a few substitutions that can be swapped out at no extra cost (my buddy didn't want to brave eating the snails so he opted for a steak instead which he absolutely loved). Everything was outstanding. We had friends from the states with us on our last visit. Our trip started in Venice, then Amsterdam and then brought us to Spain on our last leg. We selected the best restaurants we could find in each location. Our friends opined that this meal was the best they had had in Europe. The only drawback is how agonizingly slow it is to get your bill (although we found this to be common everywhere we went). Spaniards, and Europeans in general, are not in a hurry to do much. Especially in the Mediterranean countries and especially at lunch time. So be sure to ask for your bill as soon as your dessert comes out or it'll be a little while. The bottom line: if you are looking for fantastic authentic arroces typical of this region of Spain paired with really good appetizer tapa plates, this is a great place

When we asked, the waitress told us that we needed to be patient because this is a rice restaurant, not a brasserie... Twenty minutes later the steaks came out, awfully cooked.
