Given its name one can only assume it was one of the first parks in the area, a leader of parks, a trailblazer in the park consortium.
The park is grand, both in size and in stature. A Gazebo centralises the action. All through the day you can see mothers groups with their prams sitting in corners of the park, children playing on the equipment and an assortment of locals walking their dogs along the paths and grassy areas.
The park is surrounded on the East Side by the Leichhardt Public school, so if you get too close on a school day your park serenity will be interrupted by the squeals of a game of schoolyard tip.
Where as if you get too far west, you hit the Norton Street border. The main street that runs through Leichhardt, host to busy traffic and loud busses.
Public toilets toilets are available at the park, though, as the park is privy to a collection of people called, "Lads" in the evening, the toilets are a little dubious and not of fantastic standards. This lad issue is also a reason one should avoid the park at night unless you're walking a large Rottweiler.
But should you be caught in pioneer park once the sun has gone down, here are a few tips.
Never look a lad in the eye, it infuriates them and they will take this as a challenge to their manliness and will want to fight.
Never back down from walking toward them; if you remain steadfast in your trajectory and continue on, chest broad, eyes focused, they will most likely continue on, show any sign of weakness and they will pounce. It is in their nature to attack the weak.
And overall, just avoid it too late at night, it's the place where the lads gather to buy and sell drugs, a kind of moonlight market if you will.
Conclusion. Great during the day. Night time? only if you need some drugs. read more
