A big group stopped by for dinner on a Friday evening. There was plenty of space to sit down, no wait for us. You order at the counter. There's a variety of choices, mostly sandwiches or hot plates of meat+ sides. I had the Pipo's special sandwich of pork and veggies with crusty, crunchy bread. This must be one of the best values in town. My $6 sandwich was two meals worth of food once paired with a side. My wife was similarly happy with her veggies sandwich. We had Moro rice, french fries, and salad as sides. The Moro rice was delicious but not veggie friendly (had pork). All of our friends were happy with our food. The staff were all friendly and didn't make a fuss when we stayed all the way until close. They seem to do brisk carry-out business as well. Stopped in for a quick bite after a hot afternoon at the zoo. My knowledge and experience of cuban food is certainly limited but everything was delicious!! We ordered roasted pork, fried pork chunks, and a palomino steak with mashed potatoes and yellow rice. We also got an empanada and croquettas. So, we loved all of it. The empanada was delicious with a great crunch on the outside and the yellow rice was so good. My husband loved the steak which is very heavily seasoned and I loved the pork chunks. My kids enjoyed the roasted pork (shredded) which was tender and juicy as well as the white rice. There's plenty of spaces to sit down and eat. I had no idea that the Cuban sandwich was invented in Tampa but once I learned this important fact, I knew I needed one. Pipo's popped up as a good place to grab one and so I headed in before my departure. Pipo's is located just minutes from the airport making it a convenient spot to stop before or after a flight. Anyway, I walked in, ready to order my sandwich and was confronted with a steam table full of delights. I ended up with a pork plate that came with 2 sides (yellow rice and black beans in my case). The portions here are staggering - there must have been a pound of pork on my plate! My total - for a huge meal, a side of perfectly ripe & creamy avocado and a drink - $11. My pork wasn't fatty at all and was wonderfully rich and porky. It reminded me of a recent Lechon torta I had in Mexico. When mixed with rice and super flavorful beans - the perfect bite. I ate WAY too much and there was still plenty left. (Currently in a food coma at the airport) Super nice staff, everything was very clean and there are clearly lots of regulars. Whenever I am in Tampa I try to make it a point to grab some Cuban food before I leave town. This is my first time trying this place via delivery and the food was pretty good. We ordered the shredded chicken which was plentiful and had good flavor. The red beans and rice we got to go with it was good as well. We also ordered the shredded beef (ropa vieja) but received what I believe is carne con papas although there was only one piece of potato. The mix up in the order is the reasoning for the four stars. We were seriously looking forward to trying the ropa vieja. What we received wasn't that bad though. The empanada was also tasty. The cup of soup was just ok. Overall I'd probably give them another try next go round and hopefully will be able to get the ropa vieja. read more

A lot of food for cheap. I'm divided about writing this review. I definitely ordered something that isn't considered Cuban food - bourbon chicken to be exact. So how strongly should I judge a place based on this? I'll just stick to listing out the positives and negatives about this place below. POSITIVES - This place gives you a ton of food for cheap prices. When the employee was heaping on green beans onto my plate I thought she made a mistake and thought I only wanted green beans and not plantains too. Nope, turns out she put my plantains on another dish. I was swimming in green beans! If you love quantity and a cheap price, this is your place. NEGATIVES - I wasn't a big fan of the food. The bourbon chicken tasted like the bourbon chicken you can get at the mall (which isn't to say it is bad, I just expected better. On the other hand, this is a similar price to what you pay at the mall). The green beans tasted like it came from a can. I tried my friend's tostones and they lacked any taste. The sweet plantains were good. Their other food might be spectacular, but I found the food that I chose to be lacking. This is definitely a hole in the wall, but I enjoy places like this. There is a ton more parking in the back so don't worry if it is full in the front. You order cafeteria style (anyone from Texas know Luby's?) so it is really quick to get your food. It is a little confusing at times because the side list says tamales. I asked if I could get tamales as one of my sides and I was told that isn't included as a side that comes with an entrée. There seems to be a couple random rules like that, which isn't a big deal, just be aware that this isn't a well oiled machine. I'd be open to giving it a second shot, but I don't see myself coming back any time soon. read more

I am used to a bigger size of steak; it is thin w/a tangy flavor, prob. seasoned w/some type of citrus. The plantains were perfectly ripe and sweet. Oh myyy - the chicken noodle soup really hit the spot, especially on a rainy day! I loved the big pieces of chicken (dark meat), much^2 better than the itsy pieces of chicken I got from Metro Diner where I overpaid for a bowl compared to a cup from Pipo's. You can't dine in right now during Covid-19. Employees are wearing masks, but not covering their noses if you are concerned about that. read more

I got the Togo box, your choice of meat with 2 sides. I went with half pork, half pulled chicken for my meat selection, along with white rice and plantains. A side of mojo onions is a MUST when eating here. Im not big into onions, but I make the exception for these. I was in shock when I got the the registers and saw my total as only $16 for 2 HUGE Togo box's of this wonderful food. Definitely more of a cheat day meal, and your will absolutely leave full. Unfortunately, they seem to often run out of Cuban bread in the evenings so its almost a special treat when I can actually get a Cuban sandwich. I also enjoy their meals, like roast pork with black beans & white rice, or picadillo with garbanzo beans & yellow rice. We typically order to-go, and service is quick & easy. I often go inside, to see if something else catches my eye, but their drive-thru is super convenient also. This Pipo's is outstanding, but I'm deducting a star because they run out of Cuban bread much too frequently. However, their portions are quite plentiful, and the food always tastes fresh. Pipo's is a great Hillsborough County staple, and when you are craving good Cuban food in a no-frills atmosphere, this is the place to visit. Served cafeteria style, you grab a tray and walk down their window of hot food. An entree comes with two side dishes, and a couple pieces of bread. My usual go-tos are their picadillo, or ropa vieja, although I like their chicken and potato dish too. Sides are always yuca, my fave, and then I either get Cuban rice with black beans, or plantains, or green beans. Portions are very generous, and there is always enough for two meals.
