    Sticky gunk in elevator
    Brian E.

I've stayed at more Marriott properties than I can even remember. But this one will stand out as one of the grosser ones I've visited. I was only there for one night, love the proximity to the arena, that's about all this place has going for it. Otherwise it is very dated and based on the cleanliness of the elevators, not well cared for. My room seemed clean enough but I arrived late and was out the door early so I didn't investigate too much. A colleague who lives in the area said she was surprised to find that the hotel was open. Apparently it had been closed for years. Back to the elevators, every elevator I rode was covered in some kind of sticky gunk. Looked like a soda bottle exploded on them or something and no one could be bothered to clean it. At first I thought it was just one of the elevators but on subsequent trips up and down from the lobby, it was clear that this was an issue on multiple elevators...the pics I took don't show it well, but it was gross. My attitude is if the public areas of a property are in bad shape, the behind the scenes conditions are probably worse. Doubt I'll be back.

    March Madness taking over!
    Victoria M.

Came to the Pittsburgh Marriott City Center for March Madness. The hotel was our basketball team's hotel - go Golden Grizzlies! The hotel is right next to the hockey stadium, so it is perfect if you are in town for an event at PPG Paints Arena. Valet was easy and only $10 more than the self-park option. Inside was a little underwhelming. To the right is the hotel's bar, Crafted North. To the left is the lobby. The hotel had March Madness banners and our teams logo throughout the lobby to celebrate us being there, so that was great. The staff who checked us in had a problem finding our reservation. It was found eventually and he upgraded our room because of the mix up. So we were on the top floor - 21st room. Elevators are slow and clunky, especially when you are coming up and down from the 21st floor. Our room was fine - clean and comfortable. The bathroom was updated while the room itself was not. We had no soap in our room and asked for some to be brought to our room but it never came, so when we were downstairs we asked for some. The bed was not very comfortable - too hard for my liking and the pillows were like pancakes, totally flat. Our TV sound was not working, so we unplugged the TV and re-started it and the sound worked. There was conjoining doors to the room next door and I could hear the TV in the next room. I checked the door and sure enough our adorning room was not locked! I could also see the door cracked of the door next door. Safety issue?! The deadbolt didn't latch and only the tiny door handle lock worked. So be safe Yelpers! The Crafted North bar was good - some different and unique food options, along with a full bar. Staff were running around and working really hard, especially dealing with us basketball fans. The tomato soup and nachos were delicious! Our university hosted a pre-game event in one of their ballrooms and it was great. Food was awesome and staff made sure dirty plates were cleared and food was replenished. The room itself is much like the hotel room - lots of warm outdated colors like browns/reds/yellows. Walkable wise there is nothing extremely close. The stadium seems to be the biggest and closet thing to the hotel. Tried to find a place for breakfast and had to walk about 10 minutes from the hotel to find somewhere. Not many restaurants either around the stadium or other attractions.

The room is really dirty... rings of dirt & mold in the shower. Dust and grime everywhere honestly

Where to start....the room was completely disgusting. Very dirty and looked like it was only "walked through" by housekeeping. We stayed for two nights in the same room and asked for housekeepingmake the bed and bring new towels while we were out for the day. When we returned neither things were provided by the hotel and I called the front desk for them to apologize and say they would at least send towels up to our room, we waited over 30 minutes and no towels were brought up to us so we went to the front desk and they offered us free breakfast and stated that it was a third party that cleans the rooms so it isn't their fault. Not to mention when staying here be prepared to pay an extreme amount of parking fees. We stayed for 2 days and paid $100 in parking at the garage for the hotel on top of the cost of the over charged room. We will never stay here again. Shame on you Marriott!

The whole hotel smells like pot. The elevator, my floor and the parking garage. Maybe I'm just unlucky they have an inconsiderate guest... The valet in the morning is hard working. The one in the afternoon is on his phone and gives you an annoyed look when you tap his window to ask him to help. Both times I dealt with "Larry" (on his shirt), he wasn't pleasant and didn't want to be bothered. I didn't have a full stock of supplies. No big deal but they weren't refreshed the two days after checkin. My tissue box was replaced the second day... My room smelled the first day. It wasn't a funk, but a faint recognizable smell... my guess it was weed now that I've been here a few days. The in hotel restaurants are slow. I went for a second time because I was tired and didn't want to leave hotel and no one was there to seat me or was paying attention. Sat for five minutes and decided it was worth walking because I was more hungry than tired. Individually, I can ignore any one of them. Collectively, it's a BIG warning sign of hidden problems and there are plenty of hotels in the area... Marriott brand if you're frequent customer looking for points (like me). There's still one more night... let's see if I change my mind. The only highlight was the hard working valet in the morning! --next morning--- Thought I'd sleep in but swear that my door opened and closed. A little after a gentle tap that asked if I needed anything. Ok, no big deal, that's why I put safety latch on because it's happened to me before but I didn't hear knocking and I was in the shower... so I learned to use safety latch. It was 9:am so it's a reasonable time to knock. Then I noticed during previous refresh, they gave me two lotions instead of conditioner. Again, no big deal ... taken alone. So no conditioner. ...and the water was lukewarm but at least it wasn't cold. Also, not unusual, at around 1000, I've experienced that too from morning rush. As I was leaving, I realized they took my change from the vending machine. Again, no big deal because I usually leave that as -part- of my tip when I leave, I do like to keep it to use at the vending ma machine though. I know, don't leave money out, so that's on me too.... Easy to mistake as that's the tip of the day... but almost always, they leave it unless I put a note. Again, any of these taken alone or in various combinations is fine... BUT ALL of these over a course of one stay?

Great hotel. Friendly and courteous Valet. Clean lobby. It's got more than 20 floors, so if you enjoy high rises. Great gym, pool is clean, nice men and womens saunas. Modern flatscreen, great desk, pretty mid sized fridge, plenty drawer space, Heater and AC unit work well it's a PTAC style with wall thermostat. Plenty of night stands I got 4 in my room. Customer service is professional and friendly. They have a restaurant/wine bar running late til 11pm! Overall Im happy with my stay

I stayed here one night because I thought the trendy Bloomfield neighborhood would provide a nice change-of-pace from the more established downtown area. I was also planning to drive to upstate New York and thought this would be a convenient location for a faster getaway. Well, a sudden winter snowstorm forced me to cancel the side trip to New York, and I ended up spending very little time exploring Bloomfield because I took a long nap in my room after a sleepless night in the previous hotel. Even though it was bordering on pointless to shift to this hotel, I still enjoyed the studio I reserved for $152. There was a comfortable king bed, a fully equipped kitchen, a corner sofa, and a 360-degree swivel flatscreen TV. It was a lot of amenities I didn't need, but hey, it was freezing cold, so the apartment set-up made it feel cozy. One other advantage was a sizable lot to park my rental SUV. Even though they offered a happy hour and continental breakfast, I skipped both. Instead I braved the cold and just strolled on Baum to find a decent greasy spoon for dinner and a quiet gay bar for a drink. Not a bad stay, and I'd consider a return to explore Bloomfield. The lobby area was really pretty and so much larger than it appears from outside. Free breakfast! The pool was nice and heated. We had it to ourselves both times we went in it during our stay. The parking is pricey. I absolutely hate paying for parking. I wish this came with the hotel stay as it was also already priced on the higher end. Overall, I would definitely stay here again. I would probably pick a day that didn't fall on a holiday weekend for a less expensive stay.

This past weekend (checking in Friday, June 12; checking out Sunday, June 14) was the end. When I checked in, another guest was at the front desk requesting a fan. The person checking me in seemed involved with that, so they didn't seem concerned with filling me in. It turned out, however, that the air-conditioning was broken for the entire hotel. After around a half-hour, I really started to notice the heat and humidity in my room. My wife was arriving later (after a difficult air-travel day), so I went back to the front counter to inquire about the AC. This time, there was one couple checking in with the person I had spoken to. and that couple was given extensive detail about the AC issue. When it was my turn, I noted that I had just checked in and got none of that detail. She told me then that there was no way of knowing when the AC would be fixed, but if it wasn't fixed by 6 p.m., there would be a discount; or, if we chose to leave, there would be no charge. Something, at least. A little while later, the AC kicked on. Excellent! I set the AC as low as possible to cool things off. The AC was actually set to 62 degrees from Friday evening to Sunday morning. Despite that, the coolest it got was 68 degrees on Sunday morning. Midway through the day on Saturday afternoon, it was around 77 as we were trying to get dressed for a wedding. (There were actually two wedding parties staying at the hotel for the weekend, all dealing with poor AC at a supposedly "luxury" hotel). We called back to the front desk about 1 p.m. Saturday, and they expressed shock that our room was not cooler because the AC had been fixed. A few minutes after our call, the room began to cool to a reasonable temp (though, again, never anywhere near the actual temp it was set to). My wife decided the hotel was intentionally turning off the AC to try to save money. I decided that they weren't being intentionally malevolent, but rather they were just inept. Either way, the hotel absolutely failed to live up to what it had once been. We won't be recommending or returning again. Also of note: - The hotel website notes its Spirits and Tales restaurant is open for lunch on Saturday and Sunday. But don't be fooled into thinking that means you can order lunch on Saturday; they only have their brunch menu (which is almost identical to their breakfast menu. The salads and sandwiches on their lunch menu are not available.) That said, at least we could get into the restaurant this time. On a previous stay, we arrived to discover the entire restaurant and bar had been booked by another party, so we had to go elsewhere for a drink. - The hotel's other restaurant, Cork and Crust, is also not open for lunch on Saturday or Sunday. So if you do want lunch on the weekend, don't expect to get it at this hotel. (The pizza I purchased Friday night was fine; I wasn't a big fan of the non-traditional Margherita pizza (with pesto and slices of garlic), but I'm picky about pizza.) - The carpet in our room was fraying. The mini-bar refrigerator was empty. - Apparently, the hotel was used as an overflow space for students from the University of Pittsburgh in recent times. That may explain why things are a little worn. But the idea that I'm paying luxury hotel prices for a glorified dormitory is a little much for me. The one positive is the man working the desk downstairs at the Lower Lobby. He's been there for a number of years, and he always remembers my wife and I (even if it's been a while since we were last there). He's kind, friendly, and helpful. The parking valets are always fast and friendly too, but the main guy at the desk really does an excellent job.

You will get a free drink at checkout you can get a beer at the tap room or a coffee at Mellon Square (on site). It is not good for the speakeasy ... and yes, it's a real speakeasy that existed in the 1920s you could access thru tunnels under the city! So cool! On checkout day, the event I attended was going to start early and finish after checkout time. Since I was up late the night before, the front desk said I was welcome to bring my bags down now for bellhop to hold, but they also put me for a late checkout at 1pm so I could come down late the next day too. So partway thru the event just before 1pm I brought down my bags and they held them for the next 90 mins I was there. I parked across the street at the Mellon square parking garage ... Apple GPS marks the garage in the wrong place FYI ... it marks it about a block away but it is directly across the street from the hotel, with the entrance to it being on the cross street. I paid $44 to park there from Thursday around 5pm to Sunday around 3pm. Not bad. They do have valet parking at the hotel too but that is $55 per day I believe. Leaving was sad. I would have liked more time to enjoy this place. I would love to come back sometime! I have nothing bad to say about this place. Wonderful staff and incredible hotel! Thank you for this amazing stay!
