My friend said the last time she came on a Wednesday, there was only half the amount of people. We got some food from the restaurant side. You order at the counter, get a buzzer, and pick up your food when it's ready. I got the Pulled Pork BBQ (€12) which comes with grilled corn on the cob, fries, cole slaw, and bbq sauce. It was a good amount of food and everything was satisfactory. My friend got the Salmon Burger (€12,50) which comes with fries. I liked that there was cream cheese, avocado, and a soft boiled egg inside. Parking is difficult to find - it seemed everyone parked illegally on the streets.

The atmosphere is unlike any bar I've ever been in, and the service and food was outstanding. Only bummer is the BBQ was done for the day, but we just ordered something else. And they had a tattoo parlor and a barber in the bar! Granted they were closed on Sunday, but still! Save room for the ice cream. Trust me, I'm still thinking about it. The Rennais (or Reign in some pizza restaurants) is a menu staple and always a good judge to base the quality of the dough, ingredients and cooking technique. My order was well done, a wood fired oven usually ensures a great pizza. The ham, mushrooms and cheese were all in generous proportions. The only problem was the creme fraiche was too runny and make areas of the pizza soggy. Pair it with a light red and you have a great experience.

Getting inside it's an array of dated 1970s clichés: a wide variety of beiges, distinctly yellow lighting, acres of stuffy dark wood. These clichés extended to the menu. There was stale bread, and a pointless salad consisting of only badly ripped lettuce, walnuts and some unpleasant dressing. The steak wasn't the chic start up fare I'd expected where there's only one dish and it's done really well. It was cooked well, but it was drowning in oil, and cut too thinly and the mountain of fries would have been pretty good had they been less greasy. The rest of your steak sits in the middle of the table on a metal platter bathing a lake of more oil and the waitress stands poised at a sideboard fidgeting with more oily fries. We asked for ketchup or mayonnaise to hopefully counteract the oiliness, but bizarrely they don't serve any condiments besides mustard. So it was just oil, oil, oil until the desserts arrived. The desserts continued the 70s vibe: peach melbas etc etc. I have nothing against these dishes; when done well they're amazing, but these lacked any sort of style, finesse or quality. I had the "landslide at Mud Mountain" profiteroles, a brown chocolate mess which was just balls of ice cream with choux pastry hats stuck on the outside. We also got a sundae, and it was an obscene eruption of cream. I don't understand the queues you see outside here on certain evenings. I won't be going back; it will take a long time for my oil saturation to subside. You can get the same thing done better in so many other places. Quality over quantity I say.

He and his family had been talking about raclette so much and it was finally my chance to learn what it was all about. Except I had been eating SO much in the days leading up to our visit here that I just watched the family chow down on raclette, while I ordered something else. Raclette seems to be trending now in the States and I always feel a smile creep up on my face when I see raclette cheese wedges at the local farmers markets. Anyway, since we came during the end-of-year celebrations, there was no shortage of food and whatever I ate had copious amounts of butter, cream, and meat. I was about to blow up and I actually felt like my body was begging for some fruits and veggies. Seriously. I don't speak French, mostly because I feel super self-conscious about my poor pronunciation, so I can't tell you exactly the banter exchanged between the waitstaff and AT and my in-laws, but they all seemed to have a great time and our wait for food was minimal. I will say that service at restaurants outside of Paris is much friendlier, though you also risk the chance of finding anyone who speaks even a line of English being crazy low. Anyway, I started off with a bowl of creamy cauliflower soup, which was delightful! It was followed by a medium steak with salad and sautéed vegetables. I told you I needed some non-meat comestible in my body. The rest of the family got delivered metal pails of boiled potatoes, platters of charcuterie, and a ginormous hunk of cheese, with hot metal plates that melt the cheese. As the cheese melts, those participating in eating raclette scrape it off and the hot plates adjust to continue melting the dwindling piece of cheese. See my photos to understand better. Next time, I'll pace myself better and ask for a heads-up before we come eat at Le Vieux Carillon again so that I can partake in having potatoes, cured meat, and cheese.
