Pizza Express is certainly a hot spot in Carlisle, and with so many interesting options on the…read moremenu, it comes as no surprise. I didn't think my meal was anything to rave about, but I'm willing to give another Pizza Express a go before making up my mind. I started with the olives marinate and caesar salad, both of which were a bit lacking in flavor. I was particularly disappointed with the salad, which was extremely bland. If the dressing did in fact include anchovies, they added very little, and the three anchovies strewn about my plate did not give the salad a much needed boost. The margherita pizza was perfectly fine, though I prefer mine with white cheese and much more basil. Still, the pizza had a lovely, crisp crust and was cooked well. I would likely order something else off the menu if given another chance, however, as it simply wasn't a spectacular main. The restaurant is housed in an old bank a few blocks away from the train/bus station, which makes it very convenient. The decor was plain - white walls with simple artwork and little else - but certainly better looking than most pizza restaurants in the area. The crowd was fairly young: a few families, a handful of couples, and a few groups of teenage girls celebrating their exam results.

It looks like a greasy spoon when you walk in and the back room could be a church basement, but the staff and friendly and helpful (I had never seen fried haggis) and the food is great. It was a recommendation from the young lady who did our distillery tour (do it!). It was not amiss. I had haggis, which is fried in light fish batter...lots of things are, including pork sausages (!) Bit of a shock to health-conscious north Americans. The batter was good and the haggis inside was outstanding. Get it with gravy, peel off the breading if you don't want the extra gut, and enjoy. My son had chicken parm, a giant pizza-like section of chicken with a slice of ham and a winter duvet of cheese. OMAD folks will be all done for the day. Cheese blend was perfect, chicken tender and moist. Chips were fluffy, done right. Some food is good for you, some is just good.
