Another example of an Italian chain restaurant whose popularity rests on its familiarity and consistency. The pizzas are fine, but inevitably you will never get an amazing or unique experience because large chains like this are always a box ticking exercise. Standard Pizza Express vase with single flower on table? Check. Easy listening jazzy music plinking along quietly in the background? Check. Reasonable quality but entirely predictable food? Check. It's the predictability that makes these restaurants work though, and you can't really blame a business for cracking out a tried and tested formula which keeps people coming back, nor can you blame the customers who come for a relaxed meal, where they know what they are going to get. Not everyone wants to be surprised by their dinner - and who doesn't like their dough balls? The actual building of the Lewes Pizza Express is slightly odd, a narrow and irregularly shaped restaurant, it isn't a particularly lovely or impressive space, but it does mean that you don't have to sit at a table in the middle of a vast expanse of floor, like in some visually nicer, but slightly less comfortable restaurants. read more
