Here in Buenos Aires, the melted cheese dish is known as provoleta and if your sensibilities mirror mine I'd suggest getting it wherever and whenever you see it on a menu. No exception here. I came back a second time with a smaller group and really couldn't justify provoleta for my party of 2 simply because I knew I'd consume it all. So my second visit, while very good indeed, allowed me to focus on parts of the menu that I'd enjoyed previously while not over-filling myself on provoleta. What that looked like was this: Multiple versions of empanadas, Choripán (basically a sausage sandwich), and flan, all accompanied by beer and wine and all enjoyed at a very reasonable price. TripAdvisor guests rate El Sanjuanino very high as do I. I have a hunch it'd be the place I'd return to repeatedly each time I found myself in Recoleta. It's casual and delicious - especially the provoleta - attracting both Argentinians and in-the-know travelers. You'd be wise to count yourself amongst them.

But hey, if you come here you mainly come for empanadas!! And those are great! I tried both fried and baked, and I liked them both. Service was very nice and fun, we felt very welcome and cared for. We ate outside, and it was very pleasant, so I can't really say something about the ambience inside.

The Location: It is located in Palermo soho, near the corner of Jorge Luis Borges and Paraguay. The…read morelocation is relatively safe, and it is a touristy area. The People: Good staff. The Food: - Jamón y queso (Ham and Cheese) : A really good empanada. This one I recommend trying--the ham-to-cheese ratio is phenomenal. - Jamón, queso, tomate (Ham, Cheese, and Tomato) [#1 recommendation]: This one was my favorite empanada in this place so far. A must try. If you like ham and cheese and only want to try one empanada, make sure it is this one. The ham-and-cheese one is good but the this one (with the added tomato flavor) makes it delicious. - Carne suave (Smooth Meat): A good empanada to eat. Neither bad nor out of the ordinary. - Carne Cümen-Cümen (Cümen Meat): If you want to try a meat empanada that tastes differently than other typical meat empanadas, I would try this one. It was decent, but certainly different than the standard meat ones. - Carne cortada a cuchillo (Cut Meat) [#2 recommendation]: Of the meat selections in this review, I would say my favorite (or the one I would buy if I had only the choice to buy one meat empanada) is this one. Similar to how they cut the meat "al pastor" in the United Sates or Mexico. Good choice. Pollo (Chicken) [#3 recommendation]: It was good. Of the empanada flavors talked to above, this one would be one of three that I would probably buy again. Good flavor. The Venue: They have (as shown in the pictures I have provided here) enough seating indoors for about 10 people to eat. However, this is more of a take-out delivery place. I ordered my empanadas to-go. But if you are in a group of four people and want to eat-in, I am sure that works out too. They have some special offers but only if you buy a significant amount of empanadas. Upshot: A really solid place to grab some empanadas in Palermo soho.

This restaurant's…read moremenu promises to take you on "a trip around Argentina," as it features all sorts of local dishes showcasing the flavors and produce of the country! We started off with a basket of warm house bread, and it came with several different types, but by far my favorite was the focaccia, which was topped with cheese and herbs and had a lightly salty flavor! All the breads went nicely with the ramekin of sauce on the side, which our waiter described as homemade "mayonnaise." Next, we had the Silo Pampeano salad, made of quinoa, roasted almont, goat cheese, arugula pesto, and fresh arugula. The salad was nothing fancy, but dressed with a little olive oil and vinegar, made for a really refreshing yet hearty dish. Finally, we tried the Milanga Pampeana, which was a thinly-pounded slice of deer meat, which was then breaded and fried, served over fried slices of sweet potato and a side of Mendozan tomatican, which was a mixture of egg, tomatoes, onions, and peppers cooked in a small iron skillet. While the deer meat had a nice gamey flavor, parts of it were a bit tough, and there was way too much greasy breading, given how thin the slice of meat was! However, it was tasty nevertheless, and I wouldn't hesitate to come back to try more of the menu. The standout of this restaurant to me, however, was the service--there was only one waiter manning the entire restaurant, but he was so kind, attentive, friendly, and helpful! Great experience, and great value!
