Convenient and good…read more Today our tourist travels took us to Melk to visit the Abby. The Abby visit was very interesting, starting on how to get to the Abby. We took the steep path, I suspect any path was steep. We also had an English guided tour through the Abby, which was well worth the small charge. When we finished we were hungry, and felt a little pressed for time as we soon had a boat to catch. Melk is a charming village with many places to eat and shop. We finally selected Kamillo Pizzeria and sat outside on this cool overcast day. A trick we have already learned is to ask for an English menu, which they provided. That makes things so much easier for us. They offer mainly Italian including pizza, and Greek items, but what caught my eye was their Chicken Cordon Bleu. It took less than 10 minutes to arrive at our table. The breaded chicken was moist and delicious and came with thin cut fries, my favorite style. I was quite pleased with the food and the service, our server being a friendlier sort than what we have experienced thus far in Vienna. We finished and settled in enough time to make our boat, and our enjoyable day continued.

We were in Melk to board a short afternoon Danube cruise. After touring the abbey in the late…read moremorning , we had about an hour for lunch and my daughter found this place. It is at the far end of town from the river, but the walk wasn't long, We ate here on a Friday around noon. Most people (we observed later) opted for pizza (which seemed to be ready quickly). We all got pasta. Whether it just takes longer for pasta, or service is leisurely, we were not sure. A lot of the tables here seemed to be locals but there were a few obvious tourist tables (at least, I'm guessing there are not a lot of Koreans who live in Melk). We were seated promptly and the server took our orders fairly soon. Then we waited. Once the food arrived, it was good. My daughter could not finish hers, so she took the rest to-go. I enjoyed mine and finished it, though. My wife's salad was huge, and we all shared that. If you are in Melk at lunchtime, this is a good option.

No, but given that you'll also see the abbey and the charming town, it's definitely worth a trip, and unless you are determined to eat NOTHING BUT AUSTRIAN FOOD while in Austria, you should eat here. The cracker-crust pizzas are on point (we had the tri-formaggi and the funghi), and the insalata mista was surprisingly good -- lots of fresh veggies. Everything else rolling out of the kitchen past our bar seats looked good, too (although personally I'd stick with the pizza and pasta over the wok items). It's a small restaurant, and you will wait for a table anywhere near lunch or dinnertime (unless you are lucky enough to snag seats at the small bar, as we did). The one dude rolling out each ball of pizza dough, topping it and sliding it into the oven, TO ORDER, can only work so fast. (The bar seats have an excellent view of this.) If you've got a train to catch in the next hour, or you just want something quick for whatever reason, this may not be the place for you. But if you have a little time, you'll get an actual delicious handcrafted pizza. Seriously, I want that pizza funghi now.
