It's also one of the first places you see when you arrive by train or bus and walk up to "downtown" Montpellier. La Place itself is beautiful, completely covered in marble, wide open and tree-covered esplanades at the western end.
L'Opéra is worth a visit and it serves as the lovely cap to one end of La Place. Comédie et Tragédie look down on La Place inviting everyone to come and see a show. Les Trois Graces sit atop a fountain in the middle of La Place, serving as a wonderful meeting place for anyone who visits. Le Tram runs right through La Place on its way to various parts of Montpellier.
There's restaurants, cafes and streets that run off La Place every which way, inviting locals and tourists to walk around and explore the beautiful architecture, shops and cafes that are hidden just off la Place.
Seriously, this IS Montpellier. Every local sits in one of these cafes for an afternoon coffee, beer or glass of wine. Such a beautiful place to enjoy the mild Mediterranean weather all year round.
