We were in Sacramento for the evening and chose this location after a brief "let's take a chance" episode brought to you by the bing application. The evening started off with two, fantastic lemon drops by our waiter Igor. We followed it up with venison capaccio and the special tartlette. We followed that up with Ravioli infused with porcini mushrooms with a cream sauce. Our wine choice for dinner: Comte A. de Dampierres Champagne. Then we had the Branzino (sort of a sea bass) coupled with ratatouille and Spanish-style gazpacho. For dessert: clafouti with cherries. It was fantastic and we'll be going there again! read more

Date of experience: Friday, 11/12/10 Recommended by a coworker. Food and service did not live up to the hype, price, or atmosphere. Atmosphere was great, did not feel like you're in a strip mall area. Dim lighting and contemporary music set the stage for a relaxing environment, and it was. Service was slow in all aspects (acknowledgement, taking orders and waiting for check). Started with the mussels in coconut sauce. Mussels were cooked well, but the coconut sauce didn't have much flavor. The pomme frites (fries) were excellent though. Main courses were duck confit and rack of lamb. Duck confit was too dry, took away from the taste and point of a moist, confit. Rack of lamb had a nice dry rub, cooked well (med-rare) but nothing special. Still not worth the approx. 24$. Dessert was okay, had the molten lava cake with vanilla ice cream for 7.50$. Too small for the price. Good selection of imported draft beer. My coworker had a good experience, so make your own judgement. I won't say to avoid this place because there are some good reviews here. But for me, there are better places in the Sac area for the overall food experience. read more

I was a big fan of this restaurant down in the pocket. The service was attentive and the food simple but delicious. The price was reasonable and you walked away from a meal feeling as if you got what you paid for. The new restaurant, in the Arden Park area, is just the opposite: Overpriced, poor service and worse of all an owner that really does not care about his patrons. I gave Plan B 3 tries at its new location, each experience got progressively worse. The last go around we had ordered mussels only to wait 40 minutes and told that they were out. Mind you this was at 8pm on a Saturday. No apology, no explanation, no substitution. The calamari appetizer was tasteless. The fish was overdone and poorly seasoned. The only positive thing I can say about this restaurant is that it has become progressively less full each visit. Unfortunately, the Arden Park crowd tolerates this establishment because there is nothing else in the area. Fortunately even restaurant starved APers can see that the "emperor has no clothes." Tried Plan B with my sisters. Had the mussels in garlic and wine and one in coconut. Both were good, but the coconut was better. The calamari was perfect. The pappardelle was prob my favorite but the ribeye was good too. We tried most of the menu actually. Overall good food and good service. read more

We were visiting some friends in Sacramento who have a 2 year old daughter. The fact that they are not "foodies" such as I am... and they have a 2 year old daughter, they didn't know of any local places that weren't some sort of a chain. Mobile Yelp found this for me.... We were lucky enough to sit at a table with "booth" type seating on one side and regular seats on the other... Our friends sat on the booth side and did their best to contain the two year old terror. The staff was super friendly and our waiter knew the menu well.... Always a good sign. We had three or four of their appetizers that were a mini flat bread pizza kind of thing... OUTSTANDING. I ordered a halibut special and was somewhat let down. It was basically baked halibut on what I'm guessing was a turnip puree. Nothing special.. and somewhat under seasoned. EVERYONE else loved their food.... And it looked awesome. I had a little taste of the short ribs (also a special of the day) and they were awesome. Bottom line, not really the place for a kid, but they made it work... I would go back in a heart beat... but next time I would skip the baked halibut special. If I was local, Plan B would quickly turn into a place I visit often. read more

The situation: We will need to pick up an exchange student who's staying with us. She's spent the day at Six Flags and will be dropped off at the Starbuck's at Watt and Fair Oaks at 7:00. It's 5:30. We're hungry. We need a restaurant in the area that we can hang out at while we wait for her. We choose Plan B. We chose right. We walked in at a little before 6:00 to see a rather empty looking place for a Friday night. We were seated immediately and graciously, despite our lack of a reservation, and within a half an hour, the place had filled up. First off were cocktails. My wife ordered a brandy old fashioned (she's from Wisconsin, so what can I say?) and I ordered a Manhattan on the rocks. Both of the drinks were well-made and they immediately put us in the right mood. There is nothing like a well-made cocktail on a Friday evening to put the world right. One sip, and the working week is behind you. We were looking for something light to eat (it was 103° or so when we went in) and the menu was obliging. I started with one of the tartelettes while my wife ordered a shrimp "stix". The tartelette was wonderful. A piece of flatbread loaded up with fennel, caramelized onion, leek, and white anchovy, it was full of bright flavor and perfect for a summer appetizer. The shrimp stix was a long skewer with a couple of large pieces of shrimp wrapped tightly around it, grilled, with a little aioli drizzled on it. It was also excellent. My wife then had the mache salad with brie, apple, and vinaigrette while I had the mussels epice. I didn't have a bite of her salad, but this was because she dispatched it in fairly short order. Given that she's not a big fan of salads in general, I think that means she really liked it. The mussels were very good. The epice treatment involves a tomato sauce with a healthy dose of hot pepper. I'm not one of those people who tries to eat the hottest stuff imaginable, but I think anyone would at least find these to have a satisfying warmth to them. And if you order mussels, don't leave off the fries. These were top-notch; thin, crispy, with a little shake of herbs on them. I could have eaten ten orders of them. With our second plates, we had a bottle of a Cotes du Rhone Villages (from Sablet) that was a lovely and relatively inexpensive ($35-ish) addition to the meal. Dessert was the creme caramel for my wife and the tarte tatin for me. Both were lovely and equal to the quality of the earlier dishes. Our exchange student arrived at the same time our dessert did, but she wasn't hungry. Too bad, as we were hoping she'd order the calamari or the rabbit special so that we could steal some from her. That said, the meal was wonderful. We will definitely go back and we'd highly recommend it for a light bistro-style meal. With any luck, we'll be able to recommend their more substantial dishes (rabbit, ribeye, burger) in the near future. Excellent food, good wine, good cocktails, nice ambiance (lots of old people, which made us feel young), fair prices, attentive and friendly service. What more could you want? read more

My wife took me there for my birthday. The service people were very pleasant, but horribly inattentive and slow. They also left a string tie around my steak. Great food, nice atmosphere, longest service wait ever, despite no being crowded. The staff just didn't seem to care. They didn't even try to push drinks on us as we waited 45 minutes for our dinners. I'd go back for the food, but not if I was in a rush. read more

We came here for a dinner date, we had the mussels and duck leg with fries. All were delicious and made with fresh ingredients. I would give the place 3-1/2 stars. of the past three times that we have eaten @ this restaurant, i am disappointed most during my last visit for a small dinner celebration of my new marriage... side note: BIG thanks to JK for organizing it... & by the way, that wedding cake topper was just what i would have picked myself. I still think this restaurant has one of the better muscles...only if you are a fan of muscles. Appetizers: (i) Marinier muscles: Garlic w/ light butter sauce. Good & tasty (ii) Narnaise muscles: creamy sauce. very smooth & yummy. great dipping sauce for the small cut-up baguettes that they give in the beginning (iii) Potato frites: light salt & herbal flavor; nice crunch. Entrees: (i) Seafood Risotto: this was just a-ok for me. the sauce was not the greatest. somewhat bland. there was a good portion of squid & shrimp, but those were the only two types of meat avail in the dish. the whole dish did not look too appetizing. it looked like a glob of orange risotto rice. (ii) Ribeye: a few of my friends had this dish. althought the meat portion was generous, each piece had a lot of fat. they all concur that this dish was average. (iii) Rabbit: taste like chicken. no gamey taste. tender. it was good but felt like they had ordered a chicken dish. What a happy surprise!!!Amazing food, great wine list, phenomenal service. I saw some reviews that were negative, posting about "fake French" cuisine and all I have to say is... don't go to Lyon! Their daily specials are worth the price of admission. We had the fennel leek tartelettes with white anchovies which were divine, their wild mushroom raviolis appetizer off the daily specials list, French Onion soup that has to be the best I have had (apparently rabbit broth is the key), an amazing rack of lamb entree (should always be prepare medium rare) and a Filet Mignon special with a mushroom reduction sauce that has to be tasted to be believed. Their ratatouille is insane. We did desserts of Creme Brulee, as well as a poached pear special that had whole pepper corns in a red wine reduction... how could it get any better? The service by Franc was terrific: I appreciate it when a server knows every detail of every ingredient on the menu. The wine pairings were perfect, down to the pear dessert wine that was recommended. I love this place! Small, intimate, setting with a nice little bar too. I ordered the prawns with mixed veggies and mashed potatoes and it was amazing! The prawns were cooked perfectly, the mashed potatoes were super flavorful and creamy and the veggies had the perfect flavor and snap to them. I can't wait to take my husband! I seriously don't know how this place has gotten a four star rating. Maybe it's because people in Sacramento don't know what good food tastes like, and I don't blame them because we were never offered good food until recently when mid-town was built up. Anyway. We walked in, stood at the door for five minutes, literally (where there is no host nor host stand....peculiar). The manager/owner is seriously a Class A Bitch. We walked in without a reservation - god help us! And she literally scolded my party. She told us in a very harsh tone - not once - but twice, that for "next time" we really need to call ahead, every time. But then she seated us....immediately. Odd how that worked out. And then she air kissed a few people. The food wasn't spectacular - the only good dish out of the three ordered was the rack of lamb, which came with cold mashed potatoes/vegetables. Wow, what an amazing experience. The owner, Chris, was hands on the whole time, and very helpful. Keeping us entertained. The place was so inviting and comfortable. The staff welcomed us and treated us like we were family. Chris is very friendly and a caring owner. Our server educated us on the food, and what the specials were of the day. The swordfish was absolutely amazing. The Salmon was very good as well. We had the prawns as an appetizer, come with crispy bacon on them and are fabulous. The sauce and presentation was out of site. The wine suggested was Gregory Gramm Chardonnay and was fabulous. Very polite and kind staff. All of the dishes looked great. Also had the Carmelized apple tartelette served with Vanilla Gelato which melts in your mouth and was an amazing dessert special. read more

Perfect little French corner at Watt and Fair Oaks. The service and food was just right. I wish I had taken pictures before cleaning the plate. The calamari was light and crisp. I went for the quail special with foie gras sauce and brussel sprouts- yum. For dessert I had cheesecake with raspberry and blackberry- divine. My boyfriend took me here for Valentine's Day and we both really enjoyed our experience. Very romantic ambiance. There was a set menu (probably because they get busy on Valentine's and it makes it easier on the cooks) but you still had options to choose from for each course. There are 4 courses. I wish I remembered our waiters name because he was ON TOP OF IT! Amazing service. He had light colored facial hair and a bald head (might have had a buzz cut too, not sure.) Our food was really good. Only thing to note (not a negative note, just something to be aware of.) is that if you make a reservation, it's $70 to cancel. Prices are high but it's worth it for the dining experience, and they give themselves a 20% gratuity (tip). Would definitely recommend and will be going back! read more

Wonderful tapas... the Tartellettes, the Fries (or Pommes), and the Salmon are immensely tasty. My daughter loves the fries and the bread and butter. While the food keeps us stopping by the cusotmer service leaves much to desire. We are native "Pocketites" and we welcome new businesses with intrigue... but we often wonder how hard it would be to offer your cutomers service with a smile??? I came here shortly after the restaurant moved here and can't believe I forgot to Yelp it! The food is French, bistro-style, very elegant and probably better suited to dinner than lunch. The service is French-style as well, making a quick business lunch rather unlikely. Personally, I came with friends for lunch and my Plan B had to be calling the office to tell them I'd be a half hour late due to slow service. I would certainly return when I had more time for a leisurely meal. The mussels and salads selections are interesting and attractive. read more

This is THE BEST little upscale restaurant in Sacramento! The service is superior and the food is delicious! I love to come here just to relax and enjoy the downtown New York vibe. Go try it out for dinner and have one of the specials, they are great! I came in one night stressed and after dinner, wine and great customer service was convinced never to settle for less. They made me feel great! January 2010 ***changed this because the last time I was in there before they moved from pocket...the owner was complaining about how bad the location was for such a great restaurant and I didn't feel valued as a customer. Even if the neighborhood wasn't responding how they liked, I still was spending about 100 bucks a month there and I felt that I should have been respected more. Wow did not expect such a nice lovely restaurant tucked away in a strip mall. I adore this place! My friend and I both got their house white which was delicious and only $6.50. we got the butter salad - it was fresh and the blue cheese was on point. The highlight of the meal was their yummy mussels that came in 5 different flavors, $3 extra dollars for fries but totes worth it. We shared two plates of mussels and one order of fries which was perfect. The mussels were big and not overcooked; the sauce was so good it made you want to lick the plate and mad that you couldn't. Was there last night with my boyfriend for Valentine's Day. They had a four course selection for $65 a person. We got there early, so service was good. Waiters were very attentive. Course 1: Oysters - They were good. The sauce that came with the oysters was new to me but it was good. It was limey with shallots in it. Dipping the bread in it was a good idea since I love anything with lime. Course 2: Mache Salad - It was very plain. There were only three very thin slices of green apples on it that gave it flavor. I'm not a big fan of brie cheese. I would have preferred the Cream of Asparagus that the BF got. Course 3: Salmon - The salmon was grilled to perfection. The mashed potatoes were good, can't really go wrong there. The vegetables were grilled well. I really liked the subtle wasabi sauce with the salmon. Course 4: Raspberry Cheesecake - The cheesecake was usual, but the raspberry sauce that was drizzled on top was SUPER sour. It was apparently made from fresh raspberries because it tasted exactly like the raspberry on top of the slice. As much as I love sour things, they should have gone easy on the sauce. Overall, the food was just OK. Liked that they gave my date and me endless amounts of bread. I would only order oysters and an entree if I ever go here again. read more

We were exceptionally pleased with our experience at Plan B. For those of you who don't know or get French, Franck will make you feel right at home. His artful descriptions of how the dishes are prepared make everything sound so exciting and you cannot help but order appetizers. We then ordered drinks and our experience began. We were there for nearly 4 hours. I recommend getting there early. My wife and her aunt had the Filet and I had Pheasant Ragu with gnocchi. Phenomenal!!! So much flavor in every bite and the Filets was so ample we shared them. This place made you feel like family. We ate and drank and looked over our wedding albums with my wife's aunt. Franck and the Chef's father joined us to look. The place was packed and they were happy even though we were taking up precious table space. As the evening went on they even brought over their homemade wine that was similar to a light colored port. (which I'm not sure is even on the menu.) We finished off with a Chocolate Lava Cake which was truly decadent. Seriously one of the best restaurants in Sacramento. And I thought I didn't like French food. read more

Thank you Plan b for a lovely dinner. Finally made it! Fennel leek tartlette with anchovies was a great start. A little acidic but tasty. Just right size for two little apps per person. We love mussels and found the basic one with wine garlic perfectly balanced, the provencal mussels were a little disappointing to me but not to hubby. I would have preferred more herbs, fish stock and a touch of saffron. A bouillabaisse broth. Just tasted like a basic tomato sauce. Cafe rio in Aptos does does a great job with this. Fries and aioli were perfect. Ratatouille was finely diced and well balanced but hubby prefers larger more rustic pieces. It was fine but lacked something. Service was attentive, friendly, personable, knowledgeable. They have a good crew! A nice neighborhood restaurant with a good price point and comfortable feel for a nicer night out. Went here for brunch, ordered just some simple eggs and bacon. To give this place a full, fair review, I'll need to go back again. I was pleasantly surprised when I walked through the doors of Plan B. The upscale decor and ambience reminded me of cool restaurants in NYC. Had dinner here with a friend a couple of weeks ago on a Friday night. Although we didn't have reservations, the hostess was able to find us a table and the wait staff ~ especially Frank, was most accommodating and attentive. We didn't have to wait long for our food to arrive and it was beautifully plated and delicious. After our meal, the owner's father invited us to sit at the bar where he served drinks and entertained us with interesting stories. It was a night full of fun and laughter. This is a great spot for a date. Not a good choice for toddlers. read more

PlanB set-up shop in a somewhat peculiar looking strip mall that doesn't exactly scream "gourmet cuisine found here!" But walk through PlanB's doors and you'll find something completely different...modern with far more class than the exterior would suggest. After being guided to our table, PlanB's owner welcomed us, discussed the menu and took our orders. We tried the pancetta wrapped tiger shrimp, rib-eye steak and mussels, then topped it off with dessert. Everything was wonderful, but the pancetta shrimp appetizer really stood out! Crisp pancetta with a slight crunch to the shrimp that conveys freshness. Wow, I wish they'd turn it into a dinner entrée! Now we understand why PlanB made it into Sacramento Magazine! read more

I was looking for a restaurant a little outside of the midtown grid and decided to give this place a try. I was pleasantly surprised to find that both their food and their service was great. Between my wife and myself we ordered a fairly good representation of stuff across their menu (except for meat) and it was all great. Their mussels were very well done - too often I get mussels that have been cooked until they were chewy - the mussels at Plan B were flavorful and tender :-) The wine list has a good mix of local and imported wines and the waiters were very good - just the right balance of attentive, without being overbearing. If you are looking for a restaurant a couple minutes from downtown/midtown, I would definitely give this place a try. read more

I really hate writing this review, but I am hoping the owners will take my criticism & make changes. After reading the glowing reviews my husband and I decided to try this restaurant. It being close to our house & locally owned was a plus. We had a reservation for 6:15 & arrived 5 minutes early. We were shown to our table quickly & told our waiter would be with us shortly. The restaurant is small, but the atmosphere is nice. It is definitely a place to go & have a leisurely meal with friends. Our waiter was very personable in the beginning. He took our order, brought drinks & knew the menu & specials well. After that the night took a sharp down turn. We waited 20 minutes for our salads & then the main course arrived after 55 minutes. My meal was hot & delicious but my husband's was not. His swordfish was cold, dry & overcooked. When the waiter asked how his meal was he told him. He did offer to replace it but we were afraid we would have to wait another 55 minutes for a replacement. My husband reluctantly ate his meal & once again told the waiter it was terrible. The waiter commented that it must have not been that bad since you ate it. Not ok!! Sorry to say but we will not be back. I really wanted to like this place. read more

I've been here twice now. The service is great, the owners are very friendly, and the food is amazing. The first time there were 3 of us and we ordered three kinds of mussels. They were all yummy, but nantaise was the best. The pommes frites were very good too. This time we had the squash blossom appetizer. I saw the squash blossoms at the farmers market but had no idea how to eat them. These were dipped in batter with a little piece of mozzarella inside - delicious. I had planned to try something different but I couldn't help is, I had the mussels nantaise again. The sauce was so good, I wanted to lap it up like a cat! (The owner said he'd give me a dollar to see me do it.) It looks like not much from the outside, a restaurant in a strip mall, but the food is amazing. First, make reservations!!! We did not have any trouble getting a reservation but we were glad we did. The menu is fantastic. Service was also first class. Going back to the menu... we arrived around 7 to see the chalkboard specials and we were psyched: Crab & Lobster Risotto had me drooling. By the time I placed my order it was off of the board. Chalkboard means "until we are out" so don't delay is you see something you want. The wine list was impressive and the waiter made suitable suggestions. We will go again. Phenomenal food. Deeply flavorful, rich and satisfying, inventive and beautiful, gourmet and delicious, perfectly prepared. The decor is elegant, dark, and lovely. The atmosphere is classy, relatively quiet, and romantic - but romantic in a perfectly elegant way, not a cheesy way. Our main server was amazing - very charming, extremely helpful, very friendly and chatty but in a professional manner. And he had a French accent! One hostess/server (yep, the girl with the short blonde hair) was rather rude and unwelcoming. She also had a French accent, so I almost forgave her, but still. In fact, everyone who worked there had a French accent - even the chef. It added to the ambiance and authentic feel, plus a French accent is simply beautiful They made one mistake with my dinner (giving me gnocchi with a blue cheese cream sauce instead of gnocchi with a wild mushroom sauce). It was so enormously delicious, I barely minded; plus, the server apologized profusely and genuinely, the chef came out personally to apologize, and they comped our desserts. Never have I felt so pleased and happy and well-served whilst eating a meal that wasn't what I ordered. I'm absolutely going back. I don't even care if they serve me the wrong thing again, as long as it's that good. We brought our 4-year-old daughter, which I was a little worried about, as it's a very fine restaurant that doesn't seem kid-friendly. My daughter is very well-behaved for a 4-year-old, but, you know, she's still a kid. I thought the servers might look down their noses or seem irritated. However, they were extremely nice about it; the nice server talked to her kindly and suggested things on the menu that his own children liked. (She would only eat the "pomme frites" - french fries - but at least they had that!) Later, he even brought out his own four-year-old daughter (adorable, French) to introduce her to us.
