Back to the gym I go. Not sure why I bother. I only tanned today because I had to meet my daughter for a few wedding things. Anyways the guy at the desk barely looked up from his phone to acknowledge me or the couple behind me. Finally swiped in and decided to use the restrooms before tanning. They were amazingly clean. Including the shower area. I was being nosy and just had to see if all had been cleaned . Went back to the desk and signed in for tanning.....got to the room and when I walked there were paper towels everywhere on the floor and what I can only hope was tanning lotion all over the walls and floors. I should've taken pictures but hightailed it out of there and asked for a different room. I clean for a living but it's not my job as a paying customer to come in and do someone else's job for them. The next room was a little better. At least useable. I can't help but wonder where the trash cans are that they used to have. read more

I switched from AFAM because of the hydro beds and the one is permanently broken and the second doesn't always work! Please get new beds!!!! That's why I pay for black!!! enough with the excuses! I could order one online and have it in a week!!! This facility also doesn't have the red light therapy! At first the gym was okay. I called the gym with a question and the girl who answered was snotty. From that point, I have noticed that some of the other employees have high-school like behavior as well. Maybe hire mature people? Not a fan of this gym. read more

I belong to two gyms, one which is closer to home and this Planet Fitness. For the most part, however, I have been drawn to this one more regularly. Why? The people who work there! Honestly a majority of the folks here are really friendly and the others are still friendly. In the last month or so, they've replaced all of their bikes, ellipticals, and treadmills with new models. Some of the other equipment could possibly use replacement, but for the most part, they are always working. The only negative has nothing to do with PF, but the owners of the building. Anytime there's a good rain, you can expect to see a can or two appearing to collect drops. In the end, it is my favorite place to work out with just a few itches that need to be scratched! read more

Was a customer for 2 years here because it was the closest Planet Fitness. Endured ceaseless flouting of the gym's petty rules (bags on the floor, people talking on their phones, banging weights, etc.) by other people and never said anything to them. But for members to enforce these rules on other members in the absense of any enforcement of anything, and then have the staff do nothing when informed about it, shows the staff is perpetuating this iron-pumping, fist-bumping Alpha-male security apparatus. Not the lunk-free zone it purports to be, and definitely not the place for the average person just trying to get in, or stay in, shape. Look elsewhere. read more

Joined PF tonight away from gym on post since the equipment is workable but noisy. PF equipment are clean and they have the latest nautilus/lifefitness equip. Membership is definitely priced right. $21 and u can bring a guest. I like the workout Express equipment that is grouped together so you can get a total body workout in less than 30 min. read more

There is a very limited staff at this Planet Fitness, however, everyone I have had contact with has been exceptionally nice. Another reviewer talked about dust on the machines, but I certainly haven't seen any. There has been a machine or two that had signs on them that they were out of order, but given the number of machines and the paltry number of gym users, I did not find this to be an issue. It does take some getting used to the organization of the gym, as some machines are tucked away in other open spaces. The only negative I would ascribe to this place is that the ownership treats its employees awfully from their hourly rate to how many hours they can work, etc. This though, really says volumes for the employees, who provide good service and are friendly. All in all, this location is great, but please don't all join, as I like the solitude of my workout. :) read more

If you are going to limit my access to a gym I pay to access for what amounts to nothing more than the flu virus then you should give me a prorated fee during any months my access is limited. In fact you should give all members a prorated membership fee for any hourly limitations or closures. read more

I've been a planet fitness member for almost two years now and the facility in Colonial Heights is by far the best one I've been to. The establishment itself is very big compared to other chains and there's more machine choices allowing less down time waiting for people to finish their sets. The locker room and bathrooms are fairly clean as well and this one has a larger massage area followed by a lounge to relax at. There's also 50% off drinks if you're a black card member with a hot spot accessible only to black card members as well. The machines here are well maintained and I've never had an issue with sanitation. I would avoid peak hours such as around 4-5pm where people get off work or coming in early or later on Mondays. Overall the best planet fitness I've been to. Membership is cheap, so I recommend people to subscribe here. read more

Great bang for your buck if you're focused on cardio or strength training! I've been weight training on my own at home for a while and decided that it's time to push things up a notch and sign up for a gym membership. The price, equipment selection, hours, and other perks match up with my anticipated goals for the year so I decided to give Planet Fitness a shot. The gym has a huge selection of cardio equipment and I doubt I'll ever have an issue finding a free treadmill or elliptical. With a wide range of free weights and other machines, it looks like the gym has a lot to offer for someone who's in the beginner-to-advanced range of strength training. Free courses are also available for targeted training of muscle groups - haven't tried these out yet but I'm hoping to soon! A few of the machines (treadmill/ ellipticals/ etc.) allow you to track progress by sending your workout information to your phone. Maybe not the most useful if you use a fitness tracker too, but a nice option for those who don't. Things are spaced out nicely and I've never felt like "all eyes are on me" or that I've been crowded in on, which is nice for someone not yet used to the gym environment. The gym's been a little on the warm side but otherwise comfortable. If you overheat easily on cardio, make sure to pick a machine under the fans! A few key pieces of equipment are missing for the heavy lifters (barbell benches as an example) but I don't think those pieces are necessarily critical for the skill range Planet Fitness caters toward, and I also see the possible liability issues of inexperienced customers using them incorrectly. That said, I'm trying to be creative and resourceful while making whatever is available work for me. Facilities are very clean, staff members have been polite and helpful so far, and the site seems to run fairly smoothly. The Black Card membership has a few nice perks and I'm looking forward to using the hydro massage bed! All said, I'm definitely glad that I signed up and look forward to some steady progress at PF this year! read more

Great gym for a first timer, doesn't meet my needs with more gyms open in the area. But currently the gym can be hard to work in as it's workout floor is smaller and limited. They clean ok (not as often or as strict as local options) and costumer service is good. 3/5, id join again if it was my local gym and had no better options. read more

I love coming to this location, everyone is friendly and I always look forward to being greeted by Kirsten and having a friendly conversation to make my day better. She is a great employee who I believe works hard and keeps this gym in great condition. The locker room is always clean as well as the equipment and machines. The gym is literally brand new having just now opened today. Upon my first visit front desk staff was very friendly and taking care of the members efficiently. There is a fair amount of equipment and duplicates of most. Bathrooms and Black Card Spa are all roomy and well taken care of but again this is only the first day. Potential issues on a busy day would include there being only two hydro massage beds and 2 massage chairs limited to 10 minutes when busy. Can be kind of irritating but understandable. The biggest things that made me dock 2 stars are as follows. 1. There is a type of dress code. If you've never seen a Planet Fitness commercial look one up. It's very anti-"lunk". And while I understand no one likes the obnoxious guy at the gym banning string tank tops, jeans and flips flops to avoid "gymtimadation" (per the sign posted) is literally ridiculous. If seeing people who worked hard on their bodies to get to a great physical standard bothers you, you shouldn't be in a gym at all. I wonder what issues this will cause me as I do like to where a string tank top with a sports bra underneath in the summer and biking shorts/compression style shorts and I feel I should be able to do that. Remember indecent exposure and being intimidated by other peoples bodies are two different things. 2. There is no red-light therapy here and I can't drive out to God knows where to find a facility that does have it because all the RVA locations lack it as well. However the price of $10 dollars a month, no contract and $20 Black Card membership a month 1 year contract with a $58 cancellation fee within the first 12 months is a very good deal in this area. Golds Gym across the street is dirty and out dated, and American Family Fitness has ridiculous membership prices considering their equipment is consistently needing maintainence. All in all its a good deal. read more

I'm in town for 5 weeks so i jumped on an amazing deal with Planet Fitness, $20 monthly black card. The place is spotless and the tanning beds are better than my tanning salon back home. My only complaint is that there are no free weight bar bells/squat racks. I'd rather not use a smith machine but since that's all they have I had to make do. The staff is always really friendly and helpful as well. I feel like I got a great deal with PF. read more

I was approached by Anne the personal trainer in the gym About me being a personal trainer. She also approached my cousin and church friend as well and asked was I their personal trainer. She approached us while we were all working out together and told me that personal training was not allowed and I can't train here. Please keep in mind, this trainer has never spoken to me personally but is speaking of me to other members at the front desk. I told her that I was not training them but we were all working out together as we always do. She continued to tell me that I was a trainer and that I was not allowed to do that in the gym and I explained to her again that I am allowed to work out with them or anybody else who wants to work out with me if I want and And I had spoken to her regional director about this situation before and she also stated that I was allowed to work out with whoever I want especially if I am working out with them. So, this is what I do. however this young lady was very rude and told me that I could "go out on my merry way" in the gym in front of members and my cousin and friend which was very rude and caught us all by surprise. By the way her name is Anne Peterson, she doesn't wear a name tag. Caucasian, blonde. I told her that was rude . She replied "no, you're not listening" Which was also even more rude she was talking to me like I was a child which started to make my cousin and friend even more uncomfortable. I told her that I will continue to work out with them because we are doing nothing wrong and we are allowed to work out together. I am aware that people train in the gym and I am aware that men always train in the gym and they do not work out with people that they train however I'm sure that I am approachable being that I am a young black woman and at this point I do feel discriminated against there by not only being a woman but I noticed that all of the The black employees have been replaced White employees even the trainer I am also aware that I am definitely allowed to work out with whoever I want and any gym that I want to. At this point my membership has been terminated by the manager Kaitlin. She told me that I could talk to a higher up. No one has spoken to me about my side of the story I'd simply received an email about my membership been terminated. I told her some things that happen in the conversation with me and Anne however she just stated that is not the story that she had gotten and that she had tried to call me. Which is not fair simply because I work out there daily and now my membership is terminated And without hearing my side she terminated my membership. I have to find another Gym, it is not fair at all and at this point I do believe that legal action will need to be involved because since my conversation prior to Ann's new job with the regional director I was allowed to work out with whoever I wanted just as long as I was working out with everybody and didn't look like I was giving advice. I'm not sure if this is discriminatory or not but I will have my lawyer take a look deeper into the situation especially being a woman with all the male trainers that are in the gym and how I am such a target when I work out with everyone that I am with in the gym I don't understand why I am constantly being harassed and why I am such a topic to them but I do not believe my membership should be terminated because I truly like planet fitness as a whole and like working out there. I do compete in shows so I do work out quite a bit and planet fitness is very close toMy home. I do hope that I would hear from the regional director in the right way very soon or someone higher up and not a local manager who didn't care to hear my side of the story at all I am offended by the whole situation. My better half and I purchased a black VIP membership at this facility just after the first of the year. We were going on Occasion to use the treadmill, exercise bikes and MASSAGE chairs. I injured my back in March, so we haven't been using the facility. Today, we decided to go to work on our tan. And the attendant at the front desk was telling us how the tanning beds worked. My partner started asking some basic questions and planet fitness lady just abruptly said "you just have three minutes to get ready for your tan", so off we went. We are both in our 60's so we don't move as fast as we used too! We both hustled to our respective tanning booths and I just got my clothes off and started to apply lotion to my head, then my tanning unit started to run. This alarmed me, so I shut the unit and began to remove my lotion and get dressed. I immediately ran to the front desk, the lady that checked us in, was busy. So, I said excuse me and the guy standing next to her turned around. I explained every to him and he said "our restart your session". I asked the guy if he could set the prep timer for more than 3 and he said No! In late spring we went to a couple of tanning sessions in preparation for our Florida vacation. In the process, I got severely burned while tanning in one of the stand up units. It took 4-5 weeks for me to recover from my burns just in time for our vacation. My better half joined an independent tanning facility and continued to tan. The owner of the Independant spa told her that PF only randomly & selectively replaces their tanning bulbs. And by doing this, the PF beds have hot and cold spots-if you will. read more

I signed up last week and last night was my first trip in to meet the trainer to "Build my own Routine" as they have on their schedule. My hours at work do not allow for me to attend their scheduled classes most are to early. So I arrive and am told to wait in the class area which is in the middle of the lobby where everyone comes and goes. The trainer finally shows up about 10-15 minutes later stating he did not see me behind the wall where I was sitting but if he had bothered to walk over to the area he was to meet me at he would have easily seen me patiently waiting for him. I let this slide and proceed to listen to him tell me about all his certifications, credentials and training when he suddenly stops and says "Oh wow I have to send this text" and proceeds to do so. And so the rest of the evening pretty much proceeds the same way with him splitting his attention between me, the people entering the lobby and his phone (mostly his phone and the lobby). Then after all this I basically find out that I have to adjust my schedule to come in to the scheduled classes they give for groups if I want to get any "fitness training classes" anyway. Why they advertise do your own routine I do not know. As for their fitness training my personal experience with this individual was a -3 on a scale of 1-10. I did not feel that he cared about his job, the information he was giving was basically I felt his own personal opinion and not based on any kind of training. I was told "counting calories is stupid" and "don't worry about losing weight but inches". No two individuals are the same and should not be trained or taught the same. What works for one person may not work for another and that is why the trainer need to take the time to get to know the person their history and situation. This guy is not that person!!! When I called the club to cancel my membership and let them know my concern because you have people that are going to this person in good faith for help they basically made excuses for him and blew me off. So hopefully if you decide to join you will have a better experience they I did. Thankfully I know enough about losing weight and inches to know that they go hand in hand. I have recently lost 60 pounds and from a size 16 to an 8 and really wanted to get into weight training but this is not the place to do that obviously. Good Luck!! read more
