I was over-the-moon excited to be going on holiday.
And it was okay, really, it was fine, but it definitely could have been better.
We arrived after a 45 minute coach ride from the airport and were hurried straight into dinner (it only runs for certain times), I was less than pleasantly surprised.
The food seemed average, good even, just not all that much variety. This theme continued throughout the week- make sure you avoid or WATCH OVER the open grill cook, I was served uncooked chicken of a grey colour on the outside, pink in the middle a total of four times. Chips are always without fail provided, but in terms of vegetarian options? You're pretty much stuck with some vegetable hors d'oeuvres most nights. Their saving grace came in the form of the home-made puddings table, which were generally speaking delicious, and definitely made it worth trying something new.
The rooms were pretty average- think a mediterranean Travelodge but with a nice bathroom, balcony and a big tv- but it didnt matter too much, we wouldn't be spending a lot of time in our room anyway right? Wrong.
There was nothing to do. Literally nothing.
Which is fine, if you're the kind of person that goes on holiday so that you can do nothing by the pool, but for me? Location and entertainment is incredibly important, and it just didn't seem to be up to scratch.
Convinced there must be more than a bar and a pool, I explored the grounds (which took less than five minutes). If you walk around the front of the hotel (on the right as you come out) there's a pool of terrapins. Great. Interesting. Fun. For a few minutes. And that was about it.
But perhaps i'm being unfair. They had table tennis and Jenga too and during the day you could play either Boules or Darts.
To be honest, its definitely aimed at an older demographic. The evening entertainment consisted of various tribute bands and a music quiz of songs all before I was born. Most of the people there were over 60, and they seemed to be loving it. Whilst we were hiding in our room watching Jeremy Kyle and mourning the lack of entertainment by nine, the foyer was full up until the bar closed at midnight with slightly tipsy older people tottering around with brandy and lemonades.
It wasn't terrible. It just wasn't particularly exciting or adventurous, and for me a holiday is all about exploring a new culture. Alcudia Old Town was the only thing we were able to find that was vaguely close (despite traipsing through trip advisor and frequent sessions of desperate prayer) and is definitely worth a look, I recommend going on a Sunday when the market and cathedral are both open.
If you have money to spare? I'd go to one of the nicer more central resorts and definitely research the location first.
I can't rate this hotel any higher, mostly due to location- if you're paying to travel abroad to get away from home, you don't want to pay even more money to get away from the hotel.
At Platja D'or entertainment comes at the price of over forty euros there and back of travelling across the island to find somewhere that doesn't look like mini-England dropped on a beach. read more
