We stopped at the Plattekill Travel Plaza on I 87 on our way to the Adirondaks, which is a sentence that sounds more romantic than it has any right to be. A travel plaza is a place where human beings briefly admit they have bodies. We eat and drink as quickly as we possibly can, we wash our hands, and then we climb back into our machines and hurtle north or south with emptier bladders and greater optimism. The good news is that after its recent renovation, the Plattekill Travel Plaza looks exactly like every other rest stop along the Thruway. This is not an insult. Sameness can be a comfort. You walk in and your brain says, I know how this works. There will be light, food, and a restroom that I do not have to search for and, more likely than not, will not frighten me. The building is airy and generous with natural light. Due to complete glass walls on two sides, sunlight spills in as if this particular corner of the Hudson Valley has been invited inside to keep an eye on us. There is a modest parade of quick serve restaurants greatest hits. You can secure chicken at Chick-fil-A, provided you're not traveling on the Lord's day of course, bread and soup at Panera Bread, a pretzel the size of your forearm at Auntie Anne's, and caffeine at Starbucks. There is also a respectable Applegreen convenience store, open 24 hours a day, which is where we did our foraging. We emerged with snacks and drinks, the sort of provisions that make you feel prepared for a journey that will last another two hours. The restrooms are large and generally clean. This is progress, particularly when compared to the pre-updated plaza. Not much more you could reasonably demand from a building whose chief purpose is to host people who are in a hurry. Parking is the only real adventure. Spaces are somewhat limited, and at busy times vehicles line the access road like a small and determined migration. The snow and freezing temperatures this winter have not improved matters. Slush narrows lanes and turns simple geometry into a test of faith while snow piles reduce available spaces considerably. You may find yourself circling once or twice, contemplating the nature of patience. On the whole, this is a solid rest area along I 87. It performs its duties without drama. Once inside, you could be almost anywhere, which may be the point. Highways are about going somewhere else. This plaza understands this. It feeds you, tidies you up, and sends you back into the wide and indifferent world with a warm coffee in your hand and crumbs on your shirt. Four stars. read more

The new Travel Plazas that have been opened up on the Thruway aew wonderful. They all carry the same look and feel from plaza to plaza so the reviews are pretty much the same except for location and the addition or subtract of a new location. This new Travel Plaza is a great place to stop when you're on the Throughway. Easy entrance in and out for both North and South Travel. The new choices for refreshments is nothing less than wonderful. Starbucks, Chick-Fil-A, Panera, and A Taste of New York Local food store. We stopped at Starbucks early and they had a full crew there. Quick line and fulfillment of order. We did come in early afternoon and there were plenty of people there getting ready for the day. As far as bathrooms were concerned, they were beautiful. The reconstruction of this stop is truly remarkable. It was [finally] a great experience in a rest stop. The teams of people here are extremely nice and helpful. Many more people behind counters than I was used to seeing. The new outdoor amenities include plenty of seating, a plaza for farmers' markets, and a dog park, with a playground and high-speed EV charging station coming soon. As far as breast stops, go, it's pretty good. Clean bathrooms, rest up store, a few chains like Panera, Chick-fil-A, and Starbucks.

This is a pleasant place to stop. It is spacious and features clean restrooms, several food options (including Panera, Auntie Annie's, Chick-fil-A, Burger King amongst others), a local products store, and there was a small farmer's stand out front on the day of our visit. The parking lot is large and EV charging is available. There is quite a bit of shared seating located around the plaza. A good place to take a break while on the road. read more

I remember NY State Thruway rest stops as a required chore in auto travel out West. So much so that oftentimes, we would wait till Albany, get off the Thruway and find a place to eat. Dark, dingy and seemingly unsafe. Over the last couple of years, we've seen the dreary venues torn down and replaced. Today we stopped at a newly constructed Platekill rest stop on the northbound trek to Vermont. Clean, spacious, well lighted, well frequented, safe, well maintained and with numerous concessions. It was a pleasure knowing you, Plattekill. I hope you truly are "new and improved" upon completion of the $450 million "private investment" that's apparently being spent on renovating/rebuilding service plazas along the NYS Thruway. I didn't feel that this stop was that bad, as evidenced in previous review. It was easy to get in and out, it wasn't usually as much of a zoo as the preceding stop (Sloatsburg, the one that's like a mall inside with a chaotic parking garage), and like most thruway service plazas, it was typically pretty well-kept. Who knows what the future holds? The sign said there would be Panda Express, Shake Shack, Chick Fil A, Popeyes, Dunkin Donuts AND Panera at the new incarnation. At least they'll have different options for different budgets! Imagine what a rip off a roadside, franchised Shake shack will be? In the meantime, the fuel area will remain open during the construction and I imagine their associated convenience stores will stay operational as well. They'll be leaving alternating plazas open, so I guess this means you'd better do your business down in Sloatburg or up in Malden when traveling northbound. Safe travels to all and farewell to the "old" Plattekill service area. You served us well and are probably being put out to pasture prematurely. Time will tell. Here's hoping the new incarnation isn't a soulless, poorly built grey and white box like everything else being constructed these days. read more

They have bathrooms and a nursing/pumping room. There is a chik-fila, Starbucks, and Burger King to get something to eat and drink. There's also like a convenience store in there. Looks like they'll be opening a Panera in the future. But if you go on a Saturday around noon you'll be waiting a good 45 minutes to order and get your food. That was at chik-fila but Starbucks and Burger King also had long lines. Prices seemed higher than normal at $10-15 per meal. Sides were $5. read more

Now that some of the Thruway plazas have been redesigned it feels like perhaps whoever has been responsible for them learned from some of the inadequacies of the New Baltimore Plaza. Its biggest issue was not being big enough to handle the crowds of customers, especially on weekends in the summer. This rebuilt plaza does a better job - at least it is larger on the inside than it looks from the outside. It has more restroom facilities too, including both private family and handicap bathrooms. It still seems a waste to bring in a restaurant that is not open on Sundays, especially since that's typically a busy day. Yeah, all the other restaurants get more business, but it also causes significantly longer lines, more churn, and ultimately longer waits for your food. At the time of this writing, the Sloatsburg plaza was still undergoing its revision, so this is still your first plaza traveling north. read more

Despite being so new, the location is already showing sign of age and poor maintenance/cleaning. Food locations are poorly stocked. Credit cards aren't accepted at multiple locations. Prices of food options are 30% more than off the highway. Staff seem overworked, underpaid and miserable. Chain app wallets and rewards aren't supported. Impossible to find seating or hear each other in the cramped and deafening interior. Upsetting that NYS and the Thruway allowed this corporation to take ownership of the public rest stops. The new location is poorly designed, and one can't help but think how much better it could have been if the same level of investment had been put into a model that wasn't so focused on private ownership. read more

Apple Green rest stop although new was a huge disappointment. The food court choices were very limited. Burger King set up so you could not read the choices unless you were standing right next to the counter. Chick Fillet with unhealthy food choices owned by a right wing anti everybody wing nut who wants to limit women's access to abortion and necessary health care, who is not even open on Sunday. Pizza at the "convenience " store that just had a pork topping selection. Over $10 for a small tuna sandwich that didn't even have white tuna and was on a stale roll. Even more costly was a wrap whose predominant flavor was salt that sported a soggy wrapper. Do yourself a favor and bring a sandwich either from home or your local favorite sandwich shop! An unremarkable, big shed-like appearance from the outside and open design interior, with chairs, tables and seating scattered around, as if for prolonged lounging with an electronic device. It's fresh and new, but I don't get the concept - one uses the Thruway rest stops for bathroom breaks and some food or gas and then hitting the road, not for lounging. I will say the open design and numerous windows make for a light filled interior space, which is nice, although it can be noisy. I have always been a firm believer in the idea that the journey is more important than the destination. As a result, the high point of my road trips or weekend getaways usually turns out to be that random gas station or truck stop along the way that plays such a critical role in our travels and that we so often take for granted. In that spirit, I regularly make it a point to visit certain places, particularly Thruway rest stops, as destinations in and of themselves and one of my top choices is the Plattekill Travel Plaza, as it is the closest one to home and always allows for a short but fun excursion. Located just a few miles north of Exit 17 and serving northbound Thruway travelers, the Plattekill Travel Plaza is a full-service rest area offering indoor bathrooms, multiple food vendors, a convenience store/gift shop, a gas station and various amenities and amusements. As is the case with most of the Thruway travel plazas, the main building represents a very 1990s blend of mountain lodge and postmodern styles as evidenced by the building's double-gabled façade combining both rustic wide wood and rock columns with postmodern baby blue trusses over magenta-hued panel windows. The interior shares much of the same style and design themes as the other Thruway travel plazas, such as the timber ceilings with interior cupola and the general mountain ski lodge feel, but with the smaller, square-shaped concourse found in the Marriott-operated Thruway travel plazas. I recently visited this location on a busy Saturday evening for a date night with my fiancée where we enjoyed a sumptuous Roy Rogers dinner followed by a dessert of French-inspired pastries from Brioche Doree and lattes from Starbucks. Later, while my fiancee relaxed in the vibrating massage chairs, I chatted up the gentleman at the tourism information booth about the inner workings of the tourism promotion business and he convinced me to take some rather well-produced brochures for Chautauqua County and the Thousand Islands region. As always, coming here was an absolute treat. But alas, our evening came to a close and we picked up some locally produced BBQ sauce from the Taste NY display and of course made a quick stop at the penny crank (I'm always a sucker for a good penny crank) and headed back home. read more

It's fine. It's not the best...but it's not the worst. Full disclosure...I don't usually stop at these travel plazas for anything other than refueling the car and to use the facilities. The bathrooms are kept fairly clean and I've never had trouble with the gas pumps. Several years ago I had an overpriced sandwich at Brioche Doree that was absolutely mediocre and one other time I recall going to Roy Rogers in desperation. That was a bit below mediocre...but I didn't expect much. Keep your expectations in check and you won't be disappointed. During the warmer months, they have stuff from local farmers and vendors...and there's a small area inside that sells maple syrup and a few other locally made things. There's a Starbucks if that's your jam. For whatever reason, my mom loves this rest stop. She lives down in the boroughs and whenever she heads up to visit, she always stops here (and inadvertently buys overpriced stuff). Last time, she picked up some kind of hot and sweet relish that was delicious. Like really, really delicious. Sadly, when I stopped there yesterday...there was no relish to be found. Plattekill is one of the better rest stops along this corridor...compared to most of the others in the region. read more

The Plaza itself is beautiful, clean, and has several options for food, including a 24 hr fresh grab and go type store. However, of all the options available, I would suggest NOT using Burger King. I had a 45 min wait (and yes we timed it) for 2 burgers and 1 small fry. It was the least efficient of any burger location we have ever frequented. There are 2 order screens for customers to place orders and 1 rotating cashier who occasionally took orders. No sense of urgency for the 25 plus orders piled up. We used the Fresh Green grab and go option as well on another trip though, and was impressed by the number of options available! Everything looked and tasted very good. Can't wait for the Thruway to complete the other rest stops! They don't even mention that some of the "gas only" stops do have porta potties. Good to know! read more

Nothing dodgy or scary at all, this was a greatly appreciated during my first car ride to Albany from Jersey :) I made a quick pit stop at the Platteskill Travel Plaza. The building was spacious. Some of the establishments inside include a Starbucks, Roy Rogers, Market, Brioche Cafe, and Nathan's. The bathrooms were clean and so was the seating area. There's a gas station, as well as ample parking. It's a good rest stop for a long haul drive on Interstate-87. read more

This stop marked the midway point of my drive between Baltimore and Montreal. I was famished, and in need of a rest. I spotted this stop, and decided to come here for some replenishment. I noticed this place was kept pretty clean, and fortunately is was not too crowded. I made a pit stop, and noticed their restrooms were pretty clean as well. Once done, I hit up the Starbucks on site for a chicken panini and an iced tea. I stopped to relax for half an hour before heading back out. Like myself, everyone else were commuters heading north or south. I experience no problems here, and I was thankful for the air conditioning on that hot and humid day. read more

It was above average. Definitely not worth a 90 minute drive. We ate at the great Roy Rogers. I ordered a Double Cheeseburger, single cheeseburger, roast beef sandwich, Mac n Cheese, Diet Coke and a TruMoo. The burgers and my taste buds were a match made in heaven, the roast beef was thinly sliced and the Mac and cheese was goupy and cheesy. The problem however was the pricing. For my order above, it cost upwards of 60$. The Diet Coke costed 6$. Way overpriced. Also, there were multiple maskless people in the bathrooms, making it very unsanitary. We got a second order of our food, so we spent around 100$ in total. I'm sure there is another rest stop in the area with a Roy Rogers and better prices. read more

Starbucks is great when you need coffee to stay awake on the Thruway, but when you need food to fill up, Roy Rogers and Nathans are both terrible when it comes to food selection and quality. They seriously need to replace one of these and get a McDonald's in here. The service stop on the other side of the highway is a whole lot better, but you can't reach that stop going North on the Thruway, which is a shame. read more

I'm going to offer the counter opinion to Matt W. on this one. Perhaps it all depends on whether you consider Roy Rogers to be more like food than McDonald's. I don't. There's something about all the pre-made food sitting out and wilting in the display that just makes it unappetizing to me. McDonald's used to do things this way, but then it modernized its operations. And maybe I'm spoiled. Reading some of there reviews, it sounds like drivers in other states have it much worse when it comes to highway rest stops. But the bottom line is that I'd rather skip this pull off and wait for another one with a McDonald's at the very least. There's a rest stop just down the road with a Moe's in it. It's probably one of the worst Moe's I've ever been to, but it's still better than Brioche Doree, which just makes me want to weep for humanity. If you need a clean toilet, by all means stop here. They've got gas too. And gum. And coffee. However, if it's not an emergency... drive on. read more

While driving on Easter Sunday from Long Island to Cooperstown for a short spring break with the family, I noticed while driving the NY Thruway, there was a sign for a rest stop that had a ROY ROGERS!!!? I haven't had this chicken in over a decade! I had thought they were extinct! What a treat, I had to stop here and get a 12 PC meal! Wow! $37, but worth every penny! The finest service plaza on the I-87 section of the Thruway, bar none. Northbound only. There's a Starbucks, a Brioche Dorée that has a really good variety, a non-skeezy Roy Rogers, a well-above-average Nathan's, and even the Travel Mart convenience store has good food selections (salads, hummus and raw veggies, and some decent pre-made salads). Roy's is the only 24-hour facility, though, but the others are all open into the evening hours. (There's also a New York travel kiosk which never seems to be open.) Facilities relatively clean although not huge, and there's a decent seating area. Limited outdoor amenities: no dog walk area or playground. Relatively easy-on and easy-off. The gas is the usual not-such-a-bargain Thruway pricing, via Sunoco, and it's a smaller physical building and the pumps aren't as numerous as the megastops, but we've never found a backup. The historical markers are a little removed from the actual places to which they refer, but if you're not familiar with the Newburgh encampment, you will be edified. read more
