It is fitting that a church named after the first Filipino saint would have a park also named after him. Plaza Lorenzo Ruiz is the one place that residents of Binondo can go to for some open air. Luckily for them, the local Chinese community has been working with the city government to upgrade the site.
The fountain, for example, was barely working a few years ago. Today, the water runs continuously, and at night bright lights add to the attraction.
There are some old trees that are still standing, but I wish that there were more. During these past hot summer months, a large portion of the plaza was too hot to occupy during the late morning to mid afternoon hours.
Otherwise, this plaza is a good place to hang out. With a constant police and barangay tanod presence, it has become a safe place, even at night. read more
