The Basil Wagyu
Mike B.

Great authentic Thai restaurant with some unique dishes! Stopped here for lunch with some friends. Quaint dining area that's well lit with a good amount of seating. Service was quick and friendly. We had a couple appetizers like their pork jowl and the wagyu roti mataba. They were both delicious, perfect bites before the meal. For the main course we all got the basil wagyu. It's a plate of minced wagyu beef with green beans and basil leaves, topped with a fried egg. I opted for a salad instead of the rice but it usually comes with jasmine rice. You can choose your level of spicy, I got medium. It also has a small sauce on the side that was quite spicy and tart. The meal was a perfect lunch, not too filling but enough to get full. I'll be back to try more!

basil wagyu rice, shrimp pad thai, beef panaeng curry with roti

Cute, kind of hidden Thai place in Lake Forest. I believe it was the owner (very friendly) who was helping pack our takeout order. Really liked their basil wagyu rice. Other dishes I tried, like the pad thai and panang curry were very much on the sweet end of the flavor spectrum. The food is good, though the portion sizes are on the smaller side.

I worked in Bangkok for 5 years so I'm always on the lookout for great Thai food. And the Thai food here is very good. My mother ordered the Sen-Jai Pad Thai with shrimp and I ordered the Kaeng Ka-ri, Yellow Curry (which had potatoes, chicken, carrots and onions). When I was asked the spice level, I asked the owner to make it the same level as if I were in Thailand. My Yellow Curry was delicious and hot with the right use of spices, creating a layered taste. (My only nit with my dish is I thought the chicken was on the dry, somewhat tough side.) My mother's Pad Thai was excellent --- light with super fresh shrimp. Both dishes were generous portions for a reasonable price. The ambiance of the restaurant was light and bright, with a yellow wall with artwork of trishaws and the other wall a muted grey. The owner who served us was very friendly and made us feel welcome. I'd like to try their other dishes.

Pad see ew with chicken

This is probably one of the cheaper Thai places I've eaten at but still has great flavor and execution. They have a good selection of food on their menu but I went pretty basic with pad see ew. This was cheaper than all of the places I've been to in the last year, but was still very delicious and fills you up pretty decently. We also got the plern signature pork jowl which was juicy with a nice char taste, but the star of that dish was the accompanied sauce which just went well with everything. We'll have to come back and try some more stuff. All of the workers were also very friendly. Only downside is they don't seem to have public bathrooms.

Papaya salad

Found this cozy lttle gem in Lake Forest and had a great experience. The space is nice and the server was incredibly friendly from the moment i walked in. I ordered the papaya salad, it was refreshing and crunchy. I then ordered the chicken satay and they came with a delicious peanut sauce and a tiny cucumber salad. I wish the cucumber had a more acidic vinaigrette, but the dish was still good. This was a nice spot for a quiet lunch.

Crispy Chive Cake

First timer! Late weekend lunch and had no wait. Lots of parking in the plaza. Cozy and clean restaurant. (FYI they do not have a restroom). The woman who served us was very welcoming, friendly, and attentive. The menu isn't overwhelming. Prices are reasonable. Food came out fast and beautifully plated. All three plates we ordered were DELICIOUS. - The pad see ew tasted very authentic. - The pork jowl bowl was refreshing and we liked how the purple rice was broken rather than traditionally sticky. - The chive cakes were crunchy and unique. The sauce was yummy too. Lovely experience. We will definitely be back! Can't wait to try other dishes.

Inside. No restrooms??

The food here is really good. The portions are on the smaller side but flavor is there. The tofu is crisp and firm that's a plus! Price is about same as other Thai places around. I go here because they are on the Lake Forest gift card program. The service is always good - we have visited in person once and ordered to go once. Ladies very kind and friendly. Located in the plaza near Jack n the box. The restaurant is small but clean and bright.

Ground beef with basil
Figaro R.

A very satisfying meal . I ordered the ground beef with basil and fried egg on top of the rice.it was satisfying. Spicy can be adjusted from spicy to no spice at all. I chose the latter and it was perfect. The only thing i can say is, beef was a little dry but because of the sauce it compensate it. I received my order still HOT which means they cook to order which is a plus on my book. Yes, I will patronize this restaurant again and will try their other dishes soon. Oh , I have this to-go.

Steamed Chicken and Rice
Jason G.

Been here twice now. Nice little Thai Cafe. I like the steamed chicken and rice but wish it came with more chicken. Portions are smaller/prices higher than average Thai restaurant so its not my first choice with so many Thai restaurants around. But the service is friendly. Note: there is no restroom so you will have to search nearby restaurants which is a big inconvenience.

Delicious Egg Pad Thai
Susan S.

Our food was delicious. This is a very small casual restaurant and a shopping center in Lake Forest. Our service has been lovely. The menu Included vegan and vegetarian options as well as items for every pallet. I opted for the pad Thai with egg . It was delicious.. The sauce was amazing. The noodles were delicious. The presentation was beautiful. The chicken dish was moist, juicy with beautiful aroma and nice spices. We were very pleased and happy. The chive cake is outstanding.

Michelin quality restaurant in Lake Forest, California. #PlernThaiCafe is a popular Thai restaurant known for its authentic and flavorful #Thai and #Asian #comfortfood, often with unique twists from the chef. They offer vegetarian and vegan options, small plates, and wine. It is known for its quality ingredients and affordability. I love their Wagyu basil stir-fry, crispy pork Brussels sprouts, and authentic Thai teas.  Other standout, authentic dishes including the pork chow with purple rice, steamed chicken with rice and wagyu curry. Many dishes are under $20 making it a local favorite for both dine in and takeout.

Delicious, we love everything we order, keep in mind that the coconut soup was very simple but actually taste delicious, place is small very small, their taste is good, also the servers were very friendly, price was also ok to us for the delicious meal. but something we didn't like or approved is that they don't have a public restroom, that's not good.

Tofu pad see ewe 5/5 !!
Linda F.

Probably some of the best Thai food in South County. Been eating their food for years now. My favorite dishes are the tofu pad see ewe noodles, fried chicken with rice, and shrimp green curry. I love all their Thai condiments they have which enhances the flavors. The food tastes authentic and very flavorful, not overly sweet like Hanuman Thai (which I feel the food at Hanuman is way too sugary and Americanized flavors.). The ingredients are fresh and authentic. The service has always been prompt and friendly. The ambiance is casual but it's clean and cool. Highly recommended this awesome gem!

I don't know how to describe what it tastes like, but it's kind of like a seafood curry with spinach and a bright rainbow curry. Pad woon soon was good too. And pad see ewe. However, I had a major disappointment Last night. I ordered a Tom kha goong soup that cost $17. Most places sell the soup for like 5-10 dollars so I'm thinking $18 is expensive that has got to be some dinner portion soup so it didn't make sense when it asked me if I wanted a large for seven dollars more, I'm thinking that that's probably a portion for a family. But it's cold and it's raining and I wanted to sip on something warm. They sent me the tiniest cup of soup. think when you go to a restaurant and they ask you if you want a cup of soup for three dollars or a bowl of soup for five dollars. I got a cup of soup. think when you go to a Japanese restaurant and they give you a small little miso soup with your meal. That's how much soup I got for $18. There were two slices of tomatoes in there a a couple mushrooms and a 2 piece of shrimp. This upset me so much because I spent so much money and was expecting some food. I politely called the restaurant and spoke to them about it and they said that they were very sorry but it's expensive because DoorDash charges 30% of the price. Which I understand, and I expect to pay more to have something delivered, but it was still very expensive for what I got, and in the end, it wouldn't have cost them much to give a large portion, and they should be more mindful about balancing what the customer is getting with their profits. Which they totally deserve their profits. It would be much more reasonable if the small was $6 and the large was $12. If that was the small I can imagine that the $25 large portion probably should've been offered as the small portion. Just writing that out upsets me so much have you ever spent $25 for a soup before?

This Thai spot in Tustin, Manaao Thai Comfort Food, had been on my foodie list for a while ever…read moresince it opened in 2023. Not long after opening, it was featured by the LA Times / Daily Pilot, and then quickly blew up on TikTok and IG foodie circles across OC. Dinner starts at 4:30 PM, and we arrived around 4:10. Even then, people were already waiting in their cars. We walked around the plaza for a bit, but when we came back at 4:28, a line had already formed outside. They use a Yelp waitlist kiosk at the entrance, and we were already the third party in line. The restaurant has around 25+ tables, and within minutes of opening, the place filled up fast. By the time our first dish arrived, the line outside was packed. Definitely glad we came early, this place gets busy FAST. We ordered: 1. Khao Soi Noodle $28 One of the LA Times' "Best Dishes of 2023," and honestly the standout of the night. The rich yellow curry broth with coconut milk had a nice spicy kick without being overly salty. It came with crispy noodles on top, softer noodles underneath, plus crispy soft-shell crab that added great texture. The lime and diced onions on the side helped brighten everything up too. Very flavorful and worth trying, although $28 still feels a little pricey. 2. Gaeng Som (Thai Sour Curry Fish Soup) $28 A mildly sour and spicy curry fish soup with crispy fish, green papaya, daikon, carrots, and long beans. The flavor actually reminded me a bit of Korean spicy fish stew, but with stronger sourness and herbal notes. Great with rice, though again, the price feels high for the portion. 3. Thai Hainan Chicken Rice $18 This was probably the weakest dish we ordered. The chicken was very soft but lacked flavor, and the soup was pretty bland. Honestly, I prefer the Vietnamese-style chicken rice in Little Saigon more. The rice itself paired nicely with the stronger curry dishes though. 4. Thai Milk Tea $6 Less sweet than most Thai restaurants, which I really appreciated. Much more balanced and not overly sugary. Overall, Manaao feels more authentic and regional compared to many Americanized Thai restaurants in OC. The menu goes beyond the usual Pad Thai staples, and the flavors definitely have more depth. That said, prices are on the higher side, and portions aren't huge. Three dishes can easily run over $70. Still, I can see why this place became so popular. The owner apparently used to work as a web developer before starting to cook hometown Thai dishes during the pandemic, eventually opening Manaao with his wife to focus on authentic Thai comfort food. They're already expanding to Irvine Spectrum near Din Tai Fung. Out of everything we tried, the Khao Soi was definitely the must-order dish for me. Would I wait an hour for it though? Personally... probably not! Manaao Thai Comfort Food 13842 Newport Ave Unit F, Tustin, CA 92780

I would suggest getting it a bit spicy/with more Thai curry. Their crab and Thai fried rice is also a hit. Their massaman curry is flavourful and not too hot. You can always add more spice if you want. My favourite noodle dishes are the Pad thai (so yummy and not dry), pad kee mao (love the Thai basil), and pad wood sen. I have ordered the chowmein, it wasn't the best or my favourite, this dish didn't really taste "Thai" at all and I would not order it again, but it does not affect my opinion of this place. The people are friendly and food is ready despite them usually being busy. Don't forget to ask for chili in vinegar - these are a yummy addition to your food.

We visited with our soccer family at the request of my son to have Thai food. I personally look at not only the ratings but the pics of the food in order to determine if we should go to a place - this had some good pictures that looked enticing. That was last night - it's morning and I'm still thinking about the yummy flavors in my mouth! The spring rolls were good - well wrapped and filled with a perfectly made peanut sauce to dip it in. The bamboo shoots dish came with a plethora of vegetables and was mildly to moderately spicy in a good way. My favorites were definitely the beef satay which was cool to perfection and the pad Thai - very well done - and I've been eating at different Thai places since I was a teenager! The noodles were on point with the texture, the flavor was saturated throughout every bite, so yummy! I did not try the pad see ew but it looked really good. Love the quantity given and the high quality of the food. Our meals fed three very hungry JV soccer players and four famished parents. Our waitress/server was very attentive, friendly, and smiling with a welcoming air that made us feel like we were eating at her home. Loved it and we are definitely returning! Thanks Thai Garden!

Well, I guess it was bound to happen. While my food adventures in OC have largely been successful,…read moreit was inevitable that I'd end up coming across a place that so many folks like that just didn't hit the mark for me. However, I never would've thought that place was going to be Siam Station. After hearing good things about their spot in Cupertino/the Bay Area from several friends, it felt rather fortuitous when we randomly came across their original location - and with no line in sight! Inside, they've got a cozy sort of vibe and it's cool how they have some outdoor tables set-up as well. As for the menu, it didn't seem all that extensive at a glance, but it has all of the staples you'd expect to find among their appetizers, soups, salads, fried rice, stir fried noodles, noodle soups, curry dishes, entrees, and desserts. -- ZESTY WINGS - Deep Fried Chicken Wings Topped with Crispy Basil and Served with Chili Sauce Easily our favorite dish of the night. The wings were really crispy on the outside and oh so juicy on the inside. Even though there wasn't much of the sauce, which was flavorful but not that spicy, it was fine - the wings were still great without it. -- KHAO SOI with Chicken - Yellow Curry Broth with Egg Noodles and Chicken and Served with Red Onions, Lime, and Pickles Ehh...this was okay, I guess. On the plus side, the chicken was tender and I thought the broth was pretty good - not the best I've had, but better than most. That said, I didn't love the egg noodles, especially the crispy ones after they had soaked up the broth. -- PAD KEE MOW (Drunken Noodles) with Crispy Pork - Flat Rice Noodles Stir Fried with Spicy Basil Garlic Sauce, Bell Peppers, Tomato, Sweet Onion, and Thai Basil I was super excited for this, but it was disappointing. The first thing we noticed was how pale it was and, sadly, the taste matched. Whether it be their garlic sauce or some chilis, this needed more. As for the pork, it was definitely crispy, but a few pieces bordered on dry/burnt. -- MANGO STICKY RICE A little hit, a little miss. The mango was fine (decently sweet, soft), but the sticky rice left us a little wanting. Mainly, I didn't love the glob of coconut cream, was it was pretty thick and viscous, which gave the rice a weird texture/coating to it. As far as service goes, it was uneventfully good. Although there was one point where it was hard to hail someone, it was mostly because the restaurant got increasingly busy and one of the servers was trying to help a group sort something out with their order. Otherwise, our food came out relatively quick and the workers were rather efficient with everything. Despite how we left feeling bummed out by our experience, it had more to do with being underwhelmed than the food actually being "bad". Admittedly, we came in with high hopes/expectations from all of the hype we had heard and it probably didn't help that we had gone to Manaao the night before, which is one of my favorite Thai restaurants anywhere. What's more, I wonder if we just didn't get the best that Siam Station has to offer. I certainly wouldn't be opposed to coming back to find out (and potentially writing an update), but perhaps I'll just try my luck at their spot in Cupertino that my friends like so much.

She confirmed that it was. While I have not dined at all OC Thai restaurants to compare, they did a great job here and I would come back. My Spicy eggplant with chicken and brown rice was excellent. The portion size was above average which is critical for this guy that burns through food like a Ford F350 burns through gasoline. They gave and adequate amount of veggies (and you cannot have too many veggies in this dish especially peppers) and a good portion of chicken. You choose spice level on a scale of 1 to 10. I picked 3 as a guess and would not go much higher than that next time. Their brown rice is incredible--you will not find better anywhere. Service is efficient, respectful but no time to sit at your table and chat with you. One Asian woman was serving the entire restaurant and the pickups and did a great job.
