I have fond memories of taking my father here and sharing a seat here. And it's a lovely place to go for a walk along The Ridgeway before or after. There is a hard core group of drinkers and "local personalities" that can be overwhelming for the uninitiated, this however if your on you own or in a boring marriage / relationship can make for amusing viewing. This aside, the relatively new management team have really turned this pub around from what was a bear pit to a well organised and comfortable pub with the best locally priced food and beer. Fosters for instance is 70p cheaper a pint than the relatively nearby Badgers Wood. It also sells a very reasonable choice of wine at very competitive prices. There are even guest Real Ales to keep almost every happy apart from me, come on people lets have a quality Cider on tap, not that rubbish Strong**w. Recently benefiting a big refit this pub has comfortably retaken its no.1 spot in Tadley. With great value food, comparatively cheap beer, several new tellies with Sky and ESPN sports makes it a sensible choice for watching the big match or having bit of a sesh with mates.

Staff are super friendly and knowledgeable and the service is brilliant. I love the wine list, but I'm being torn away from making my way through that to try their excellent range of spirits!! They have a green and relaxing beer garden with a cool looking hut for kids (no more salt and vinegar crisps and cola by a fireplace! ), and even their own veggie patch where they grow a few herbs for the kitchen. I wish I lived closer!

UNCLE TOM'S CABIN I…read morehave long since come to the conclusion that in general terms, the only decent pubs in the UK are to be found either in major cities, ports, traditional market towns or indeed just about anywhere in the country that is not 'suburban'. In that respect, we are lucky living where we do. While the pubs in our town are a nondescript bunch, a swift 10-15 mins drive will see you out in the country, where acceptable hostelries commence as close as about 4 miles away. Thus it was that a recommendation led us to Cookham Dean many years ago when considering a local upon which to bestow our favour. Cookham is a very sizable area, consisting of Cookham Village by the river, Cookham Rise, which provides the railway station and then Cookham Dean which at a higher elevation in several senses is the 'jewel in the crown of the Cookhams'. Indeed, the real estate prices and clear demographic profile of the nearby residents suggest anything but Life among the lowly, which was the alternative title of Harriet Beecher Stowe's famous novel. In fact in 2011, the Daily Telegraph deemed Cookham to be Britain's second-richest village (before you Google it, number one was East Horsley in Surrey). In the old days the then landlord of UTC (may he and his lovely lady rest in peace) was a quirky and bristling retired major who seemed to favour Basil Fawlty as a role model. At that time, the pub served the locals as an admirable alternative to either going home or staying at home and was very much like a private gentleman's club. Indeed, woe betide the errant unknown passer-by who entered, only to then suffer the kind of disdain meted out to an 'other ranker' who had shown the temerity of venturing into the officer's mess without having been summoned (despite the fact that either war had unexpectedly broken out, or the colonel had just exploded messily on the parade ground). But all things must pass and when aforementioned couple retired, the establishment saw various landlords (some of whom were actually quite OK), but none of whom were quite in the same league as 'Mr & Mrs Major' in terms of being such a unique institution. After a few years, we refrained from attending for quite a few years until just recently, when curiosity got the better of me and I set out to become reacquainted with the cozy bar and pleasant shaded garden. The current landlord/lady have been there for three years and certainly seem to have made some positive changes. The service was polite and prompt and the food arrived in good portions. I particularly enjoyed the deserts. The dining room was full of concord memorabilia which is very unusual, if a little strange. It's the kind of pub that makes me wish it was just round the corner from me.

They serve a good selection of traditional pub grub - I recall their beer battered fish and chips being particularly good - and have a fantastic beer garden which is perfect for a sunny day. The interior is deliberately quite shabby chic and there are no dingy corners in this pub! Since The Honeypot closed a few years ago The Red Lion is the only watering hole for a few miles and it does an excellent job of keeping thirsty locals and visitors supplied. You'll find a friendly and relaxed atmosphere and a good solid traditional English pub.

However, the refurbishment was drastic, gone is all the jingoism and threatening attitude and you can now wait for a train in comfort (there is even a display showing trains arrival and departure times), have breakfast and a decent lunch or dinner. My pie was OK, of the mass catering variety and for this reason I can't really give it more stars, but there is a good atmosphere and a good selection of drinks, so altogether a good place. It shouldn't be too difficult to improve catering standards and for this place to become one of the best pubs around.

They were all delicious, followed by three orders of the special pork chop (moist and tasty) and a sea bream. We were so impressed that we followed up with desserts. The chocolate torte was the highlight but all 3 were great. I also liked the old fashioned cordials they offered as well as the nods to the history of their dishes - felt much more thoughtful than the typical pub. The only criticism we could make is that the one bar man and waiter combined was a little bit overrun with how busy things were. We'd heard that the food had much improved but were still blown away by the quality and will definitely return.
