My husband and I had a 6:15pm dinner there a week before Christmas. We arrived 15 min late due to poor weather conditions. They told us we had a 2 hr window for next reservation which we didn't mind since we arrived late. We've been to Plump Jack cafe for breakfast, lunch and dinner all great experience (pre pandemic) so we were excited for our visit since it was my husbands birthday (which I mentioned in the reservation). Once seated it was all down hill. We were given 2 different menus with the same date Dec 19th. It took 3 visits for our waiter to inform us 4 of the 5 entrees were no longer available (keep in mind we arrived at 6:30pm). Options remaining were chicken and substituted pork tenderloin with pork chops which they charged $20 more for but failed to tell us. Service was slow, the room was cold, the chicken over cooked & dry but pork chop was decent but definitely not worth $55. On our way out we wanted to order 2 bottles of wine Togo. The price I saw on my menu was lower then our bill so I returned the bottles. They really should get their menus printed properly. Upside is apps were good (tuna 8 salad) & they did comp dessert (perhaps bc others around us began to complain about the food) but the entire meal $$$ should have been comp. We get things aren't normal with supple chain and labor shortages but I highly suggest PJ close their dining room until they can properly get back in the game. Overall this was a waste of $$$, an unfortunate and unpleasant dinning experience. Hope PJ gets it together. read more

However, two issues when sitting at the bar in the evening: 1) It was super warm in the Cafe: I had a T-shirt on, but I was still uncomfortably hot. 2) It was so dimly lit that I had trouble reading the menu and seeing what I was eating. I can't sing the praises of this place enough! We were coming from the Reno desert and in desperate need of a great place to decompress. This was a beautiful and charming respite and the perfect antidote to hard camping with all the pampering and beauty it embodies. Every detail of the hotel is perfect. Great furnishings, amenities. I do have to say, what made it truly special and unique was our greeting and the care that 'KEVIN' at the front desk gave us. From the moment I called and he answered, his knowledge, patience and just plain hospitality (so rare these days) made us want to come there. Then when we arrived, he took care of us and made great suggestions (the best being the restaurant and the fact that they could do room service!) I went to the bar because they were close to closing and ordered, met the terrific chef who happened to be coming out finishing up and the bartender went through the menu with us. It was AMAZING gourmet food. After dinner we had a jacuzzi and a swim amidst the pines and aspens. What a place!!!!!! We woke up refreshed and happy the next morning and seriously considered staying for a week, but unfortunately, we had to get on the road and get home. But we will be back! We will not be making the trek to the mountains without stopping here again. And thanks Kevin, you are terrific!!!! read more

There are times when you walk out of a restaurant wondering just what you really felt about the place. One thing is for certain, being popular is not always a plus. I mean on the surface, how can you beat it? It's in the Squaw Valley resort, easily accessible from every condo except for Squaw Creek. It has a super-friendly wait staff, dim lighting, and a kind of a maze-like floor plan. That we were able to modify our already full seating configuration to allow two more children was especially cool. We were seated promptly at close to 7:00 and we had water glasses brought out quickly. The menu has a variety of surf and turf and they have a very thorough wine list with a sommelier that knew what he was talking about. It started off being a first class meal, but then there were a few observations. It took a long time for the waiter to ask us about appetizers and kid's meals. Okay, not a problem, the waiter was very good. But the waiter also seemed to have four other tables besides the 12 top we had, which led to the question of how is the guy able to manage everyone when he has about 30 people total? Answer: very slowly. We waited about 45 minutes just to order the entrees. One of the kids plates was pasta ordered without any cheese (the child has a very sensitive and limited palate), and when the order was sent back because it had cheese on it, they tried just scraping it off instead of making another plate of it. That didn't work very well. And the noise. My god the room is loud. I could barely hear anyone next to me, and I was looking forward to the meal just so I could finish and get out. When the entrees arrived, about an hour and a half in to the meal, they more than met expectations. The pork chops were cooked perfectly, and they had nice Brussels sprouts to go with a polenta like sauce. Friends also liked the steaks and the kids loved their meals otherwise. The bill was expensive, even for the mountain, but you are in a swanky place and I would argue the food quality justifies the bill. But the service, while very good, was overburdened and the main room with the tables is just a bit too noisy for my liking. So like I said, it's hard to know what to think. All of the ingredients are there for an absolutely great restaurant. If only they would add the staff and soundproof tiles to make it a pleasant dining experience. read more

If you're not sure where to go, PlumpJack Cafe & Bar is a great option in Squaw Valley. Located right near the village at the base of the mountain, PlumpJack offers both lunch and dinner in two different settings. There's a casual, relaxed bar area with first-come first-serve seating and a nicer dining area in the back. The bar area is cozy with comfortable seating and a large fire place. I enjoyed a salad last time and the burger is another good choice. If you're coming for lunch in the middle of a ski day, be prepared to sit down and relax. If you're trying to maximize your time on the mountain, it might be better to come for dinner. For a fancier dinner atmosphere, I'd recommend making a reservation in the dining area. I loved the asparagus soup and the Mary's Chicken Breast was perfectly cooked with a caper lemon vinaigrette on top and gnocchi. If you like peanut better, the peanut better cheesecake for dessert was delicious - super rich with chocolate and raspberry sauce. read more

Not sure about the cafe because it wasn't open. The hotel was not up to par. Several wedding parties were staying at the hotel, but they didn't put them all on the same floor. Lots of noise in the middle of the night with people coming and going. Extremely loud. The insulation in the place is horrible. 2 nights of no sleep. We were told it was a temporary structure built for the Olympics, and was not intended to be permanent. And, here it still is in operation. They made cosmetic improvements, and charge high prices. This place honestly doesn't deserve any stars the staff were rude and couldn't tell us what happened to our food nor what the managers name was, our waitress just sat there and peeked at us around the corner without saying a word. We waited over 2 hrs for our food then once we went to leave they finally told us they were sorry that our food was ready, but there were people around us with even bigger groups that got there way later than us and got there food before we did and not just one group but over five . Plumpjack cafe is located at the base of Squaw Valley ski resort. Located in Olympic Valley, this little cafe has a bar and also rooms to stay in. I stopped in here to get some lunch before meeting up with my brother's. The cafe is spacious, with lots of table seating. The service was spot on, my water was refilled without asking. The cafe seems to be a " coffeeshop" atmosphere, along with the menu. There is a separate dining area for dinner, that looked quite nice, but was not open for lunch. I ordered the fresh ground hamburger with cheddar cheese on top. It was accompanied by tomatoes,onions, pickles and lettuce. Just your plain Jane cheeseburger, but it was good. The bun was a fresh brioche bun and did not fall apart and added flavor. Definitely a good burger, ate the whole thing. Why four stars, they are a bit pricey. We had the sweetbreads and the poke cones for appetizers and the burger and pork chop for entrees. I got the gimlet thyme cocktail, too, which was great. The sweetbreads were fantastic! It didn't taste organ-y and had such smooth texture, and the sauce that came with it was rich, but didn't overpower the subtle sweetness of the sweetbreads. A must order! The poke cones were also delicious, although there wasn't much of it. The presentation was very cute, the serving vessel looked like a candle holder. I don't remember exactly, but I believe we got five of the little morsels. The entrees were a different story. The burger was average and not all that juicy. The fries were lukewarm and not crispy. The worst culprit was the bread -- there was simply too much of it, and it wasn't toasted or soft or crispy, just this big dough-y chunk of bread. Even if the patty was more flavorful/juicy, the bread would still completely overwhelm the protein. The pork chop was a quarter un-editable fat. I'm all for a bit of fat to add flavor and preserver juiciness, but in this instance, I had to cut off so much fat, I wasn't left with all too much consumable meat. The best part of the dish was actually the braised greens. It had a bit of vinegar, almost like southern greens. We didn't order dessert so I can't comment on that, but altogether, despite the delicious appetizers, the entrees fell so far below par that the restaurant is a no-go for me. read more

The pot pie was kind of hard core though, with tons of root veggies that it took a couple of tries to finish off. The Cobia was probably the best dish of the night for me even though I'm a NY Steak lover. The ambiance is split between the drinking crowd and the dining crowd. Garlic Fries were done just right. Prices were very reasonable for the quality and size of portions. Only a buck or two more than Red Robin. We ate outside in perfect weather with views of the Sierras. Can't say enough about the service we received from Aenora. She was prompt and very personable. She knew the menu and wine list very well. On vacation in South Lake Tahoe and decided to drive to Squaw Valley to revisit the PlumpJack Cafe. First time back in the vicinity since 2006. We were excited to try this Cafe again. Wine was great! I had a Russian River Pinot Noir and my love had the Cab (forget which one). Two stars are for the wines. The food on the other hand was overly greasy, not what we were expecting, very disappointing. No flavor, just globs of grease everywhere. We shared the olive appetizer. Too my surprise came out heated and looked as if it were bathing in water for too long because the skins were wrinkled. I was expecting a cold or room temperature dish. We shared the chef's pizza. The meat on the pizza was dry and burnt. We only had material type napkins and weren't able to remove the grease from the pizza. We've had many pizzas elsewhere and never had this overly greased experience. I'd only recommend this place for drinks not food. One last complaint, there wasn't a glass of PlumpJack wine by the glass or a taster flight. One was mentioned in the menu, but only on a Thursday, lame, should be everyday. Regardless, the drive to and from was spectacular. We got the whole snow experience. Wow, this place is so delightful! It's warm and cozy and dimmed lightly for a romantic feeling. Too bad we weren't feeling that romantic as we wearing the same, stinky clothes that we wore when we were boarding. But that's okay because we were still seated promptly with our reservation. The day we went they were offering the "Chef's Winter Tasting". This basically consisted of four courses ($45) along with the option of wine pairings with each course. When we asked how much wine would be poured in each glass, the waitress replied "about 2-3 ounces each". For $20 more, we decided to go for it considering it was the equivalent to about two $10 glasses. And wow, did she lie! She poured us 6-7 ounces! The first course was "Pork Terrine" which was a tiny bite-sized piece of pork on a soup spoon... but boy, was it the most delicious piece of pork we ever had! And the wine paired with it was absolutely perfect. The second course was a "Truffle Coddled Egg" which was a truffle-enfused scrambled egg placed back in its shell. A very unique, wonderful dish. Once again, the perfect wine was paired. Next was the "Quail and Duck". DELICIOUS!!! The best duck and quail ever. Although one slice each, they were each cooked to perfection and, of course, had the perfect wine pairing. And finally, the dessert "Black Sesame Sponge Cake". But by this time, we were too full to enjoy it... probably more full from the wine than the food, but full nonetheless. To sum it up, the food was a little expensive and a bit small-portioned, but this was the first time that we didn't care. Everything was perfect. First off, let me say that if I could, I would give our waiter here six stars. He was so kind and really phenomenal in taking care of us. It sounded fantastic, and I went ahead and made a reservation, hoping that he would enjoy the splurge, and that it would be a nice, romantic dinner for the two of us. On the reservation, I mentioned that it would be his birthday, and that we'd love a quiet, romantic spot in the restaurant to enjoy our meal. When we arrived in Tahoe, people kept mentioning to us that we "[had] to try PlumpJack", as it was the best restaurant in the area. When we got there, we were excited to be set at a two person table and to be greeted by a friendly, knowledgeable waiter, who suggested some champagne for the occasion. (We split a glass, generously poured in two flutes between us.) From there, we had to try a PlumpJack wine, and settled on the Adaptation Cabernet Sauvignon. It wasn't too dry, and we both found it very enjoyable. The waiter was kind enough to split an appetizer and a salad onto two plates for us, again, generously portioned. We had the scallops, which came with an interesting blood-orange sauce and had a great flavor. For our main courses, I had the swordfish and he had the duck confit. I loved the swordfish, and didn't mind the smaller portion size, given our pre-meal appetizer and salad. I took a bite of his duck, and it was -fantastic-. It was so obvious that he loved it, and I was glad that the meal was living up to the hype! For dessert, our waiter brought out a creme brulee with granola, nuts and dried berries. We loved it!!! The food and the service were both fantastic. The lost star for PlumpJack had to do with the request I made during the reservation process... I'd asked for a quiet, romantic spot where we could enjoy our special meal. While we were initially fine with our seated location (toward the middle of the restaurant at a two person table), about half an hour into our meal, two large, corporate groups were seated on either side of us. They were VERY loud, and we almost had to shout to hear each other at times. It would've been a much nicer ambiance to have a side table away from the noise, but instead, we were in the middle of a large crowd... We are locals and came here for a nice date night for a celebration. We have a few favorites around the area but wanted to try something new and came here. Unfortunately, both the service and food were disappointing. It was clear the servers and bartenders thought we were tourists and would not return and treated us as such. After ordering steaks rare, one came out well done (no pink at all). I politely asked if it could be cooked again to be more rare. It was obvious it was an inconvenience and the service quality declined further. I've actually never sent a meal back in a restaurant, but again this was a splurge celebration for us and so clearly not what I had ordered. The next steak came out a while later and was blood rare. It felt like it was a small act of defiance. But I enjoyed it because it was closer to what I wanted! Nothing was taken off the bill despite us having to send that back and eat our meals at different times. We decided to finish the night with one drink at the bar. The bartender made a comment that we were the ones ordering all of the xx cocktail (I guess it is more challenging to make?). It further made us feel unwelcome. Further, despite one of us not having a drink, they did not ask if we wanted one. We decided to finish the last few sips and head out. It was a really disappointing experience. We have made many friends at some of the other local places where the staff is more welcoming. We'll continue to frequent our regular spots with frankly better food as well. read more

This restaurant was truthfully really good. When I initially entered, I wasn't sure if it'd be above my price range but I decided to venture on and try it nevertheless. I thoroughly enjoyed my squash dish, dessert and my specialty drink. I had the luxury of meeting some fellow patrons who were congenial and pleasantly conversational. Actually, the "Cafe" gets a zero. Their mussels were mediocre to say the least, they could use a lesson from some quite good French restaurants/chefs. Forty dollars for substandard meat, aka, flat iron "steak" was simply tough and gristly. It was a special occasion for us and ordered the server's desert recommendation. After half an hour, it never came, that was enough for us; we paid the bill and left. The message to management; we will not return. Yes you have a captive and perhaps naive clientele, but your reputation rests upon quality for a reasonable value, for which you failed. There are so many excellent restaurants in the Tahoe area, don't waste your time, money and pallet on this one. One positive note, our server Richard was excellent. PlumpJack management should be ashamed to have such a fine person front their poor quality enterprise. read more

We had breakfast and lunch at the bar cafe area. The breakfast buffet offers the essentials, fresh and warm. The scrambled eggs are free range. The fruit plate is fresh. They make their own whole wheat sourdough. I love it. The lunch service was great. The bison chili topped with hickory radish was hardy, fresh, but not overly seasoned. The spinach salad was delicious. The poached egg was a great touch. The dressing was tasty, but not overwhelming. Another table ordered burgers. They smelled heavenly! We had dinner at the formal restaurant. The service was superb. The food was well prepared and presented. It's definitely not just a ski resort type of dining. We felt we were dining back home in SF. Plump-jack Cafe and Bar is definitely one of the more high end restaurants not only in Squaw Valley but in Lake Tahoe itself. The first course was bad. Im a duck fan and I like when its moist and it feels like it will melt in your mouth. The duck here was the opposite of what I love. The flavors were just bad and competed to my taste buds but ended up just being mediocre. The duck itself was cooked badly was very dry. The taste was off and it tasted cheap. It was also very tough and at times felt like you were eating a rubber bullet. After the first course was mediocre I wasn't particularly looking forward to my Flat Iron Steak. I asked for it medium rare. It wasn't cooked perfectly but it wasn't cooked badly. The sides of the dish were pretty phenomenal they had potatoes that were cooked just right along with these sauces which completed the dish. If I am ever back in squaw valley I will be visiting this place again. read more

$15/person for Sunday brunch buffet... Pretty good for the price. It could have a few more items. The waffle & croissants are delicious. Scrambled eggs, bacon, toast... I ate dinner here for a work team offsite. It's a lovely fine dining restaurant. For starters, we had the seafood poke cones with mango, jalapeno, wakame seaweed and sesame-ginger vinaigrette. The petite cones were presented in a nice iron holder, and the poke was fresh and delicious and the cones light and crispy. Then I had the kabocha squash winter bisque with poached cranberry-dungeness crab cake and meyer lemon creme fraiche. The bisque was served in a huge bowl and was very light and flavorful, and the crab cake was fresh big pieces of amazing crab meat. For the second course, I had the grilled Caribbean cobia with warm hummus, harissa butter, romanesco, tangerine. The cobia fish was a nice thick size portion. I never had romanesco before - it's like a cross between a broccoli and cauliflower, but a light green color with a series of spiral buds; very eye-catching. It was tender and tasted like broccoli to me. I was so full from the poke cones and bisque that I couldn't finish my second course. After a bit of rest, we ordered dessert. I had the PlumpJack's chocolate mousse s'more - honey graham cracker, liquid fudge and house made marshmallow. I love s'mores (my fav part of camping) and had to order this dessert. OMG it was the best fancy s'more I ever had; it was so yummy! The mousse was so decadent and light, and topped with two large perfectly roasted marshmallows. The next day we at the breakfast buffet in the bar area near the fire pit. It was a small buffet with scrambled eggs, bacon sweet potato home fries, fresh fruit, toast, tea, coffee and juice. Nice dining option for the Squaw Valley area - not as good as their San Francisco location but that's to be expected. Very nice materials, cozy chairs and it's not too noisy. Food was good, they were offering a harvest menu with 3 courses for $60 which included wine pairings. I'd have to say the best part of the whole meal was their homemade sourdough bread which I couldn't get enough of. Nice wine list, decent cocktail selection but very spotty service (we were left waiting for ages while our waiter attended to a very drunk table). All in all, this isn't a bad choice for the area. read more

We were pretty excited to come here for dinner. Unfortunately, the food did not meet our expectations. There are two areas of this restaurant with two separate menus. We sat in the front area, with the bar and green couches. The ambiance is more relaxed with a bar. I really wanted the salmon chowder and it was a complete disappointment. It didn't taste anything like salmon or chowder. It had big chunks of carrots and potatoes. The chowder was not very creamy and although the presentation was great, there wasn't much "chowder" in that bowl. My husband had noodles with an egg on top. He was not impressed with the flavors of that dish, either. Let's talk about the service. I ordered a glass of wine and I got that, promptly. However, it took some time for our food to come out. We were having drinks in the casual bar area, and a manager came over to scold us for placing our foot on their chair. Not a fan of the pretentiousness stinking the air here. Mind you, another table nearby had guests doing the exact same thing. The only difference is that our table had more minorities. No wonder they have mediocre reviews here! We'll take our business elsewhere next time. read more

This place was a huge disappointment especially for the price of food. Customer service was adequate but food was not that great.

We have been coming to PlumpJack Cafe since it opened in 1994. We've had many wonderful meals, had a large birthday party in the private room, and introduced many friends to the restaurant. I liked to tell people it is one of the best in Tahoe. Tonight I brought six friends, including the publisher of books by Anthony Bourdain. He has very discerning taste and I was confident he would like the food At PlumpJack's Cafe. What a shock. What happened to this once-great restaurant? Admittedly, it is not easy to provide offerings to those who are vegans, which my husband and I are. But in most good restaurants the waiters tell us the chef would be happy to make a simple vegan pasta. At Plumpjack's, I was told they could not accommodate any variations to the menu. I was told I could order only one thing--a cold soba noodle dish from the bar menu. So my husband and I ordered that. The cold noodles were so overcooked they clumped together. When chewed they had the consistency of glue. There were only a few bits of mushroom and veggies. There was no broth, no flavor whatsoever. I ate only a few bites and had to stop. My husband said it was awful but he had not eaten all day so he choked down a ball of dough, but remained upset that we had been served such poor food. When I told our waiter that the soba noodles were inedible and why, he repeated back in a snide way what I had said and added, "Anything else?" There was no apology, no offer to provide something else. My publisher friend asked the waiter to bring me a salad and the waiter replied in a sarcastic tone, "with pork"? That upset all of us. We did not understand why the waiter was belittling me. Had he deemed I was too uppity for someone with my skin color? Why was he all smiles with customers at other tables? The maitre d' was more understanding and offered a plate with avocado and tomatoes to go with the iceberg lettuce. Too little too late. The whole tone of our evening had been dampened by a hostile waiter. Everyone was angry. My publisher friend also said his food was not great. PlumpJack, what happened? You have surly service, your food quality has suffered. You are the opposite of accommodating. I can't believe how much you've changed. Sad to say, although we have been customers for 25 years, we will not be going back nor will we be recommending Plumpjack's. read more
