When we were there for spring break, we were coming off a storm and it was quite rough. Some surfers catching some great barrels which was fun to watch. Other days it was calmer. A ton of snorkelers - I guess there is a few reefs full of fish. It's also adjacent to a sea turtle cove, so you can catch some sea turtles on their way. Overall, a great beach. Afterwards we drove over to Dragon's teeth to hike down to Makaluapuna Point, where we watched huge waves crash against the rocky shoreline. Walked 10 minutes past the Ritz Carlton, Kapalua to DT Fleming Beach Park. Only 3 miles from Kapalua Bay, one of the best snorkeling spots on the island. However, no snorkeling here today, as high waves rolling into the long beach. Red flag warning sign says 'Danger, no swimming'. Another sign says 'Warning, Dangerous shorebreak'. Picnic tables and rest rooms, with outdoor showers available to wash away the sand. There are about 20 free public parking spots, but all were taken by 10am, including a number of food trucks, and surf board rental trucks. Across the street is a parking lot of several dozen spots, with only three filled. Nonresidents have to pay and register at this parking lot, through www.parklinq.com, entering zone 210. On Thursday November 7 2024 they only offer all day parking 7am to 8pm for a flat fee of $26. Hawaii residents may register to park for free. The good thing is that this $26 fee enables you to park on the same day at the impossibly crowded Kapalua Beach parking lot 3 miles away.

However, now we have two kids and they loved playing in the sand and ocean waves. Maui ocean water is warm, so everyone stays warm while in the ocean or snorkeling. We take turns watching the kids while the other parent goes snorkeling. On several days, we saw lots of fish, turtles, and eels. On one snorkeling adventure, a more experienced snorkeler pointed out to me something near the rocks. When I first looked, I didn't see any fish and the person pointed again. THEN, I saw it! It was an octopus on the rocks! It was holding on to the rock and I could see it breathing. That's the only motion you could see. I watched it for several minutes, then the octopus started moving its tentacles and moved around the rock, then swam to another rock. That was sooooo coooooool! (Thank you fellow snorkeler!) Seeing the octopus was one of the highlights of my Maui vacation. There are showers and restrooms on one entrance to Kapalua Bay, so you can rinse off before heading to your car. For parking, there is a paid lot (pay through an app on your phone, but it's expensive). You can also find street parking and walk to the beach. Hope to be back in 2027!! Xie Xie!!

Very calm waters with plenty of reefs near and while we didn't see thousands of variety of fish we saw enough to leave happy and with good stories... My son saw a turtle! and we saw lots of Dori's family members and tons of Reef Tigerfish which also known as the Hawaiian State fish! There is a golden time to do snorkeling or swimming without the bigger waves rolling in. We got there around 11 and stayed until 1pm or so because the waters began to feel more forceful. Also a telling sign was the surfers started showing up another telling sign the tides were shifting. Have a great time, and be ready to see a lot of beach chickens too! Oh lastly, it's a very short walk if you want to grab something to eat at a cool indoor mall with a few food truck style options and if you need to shop for things (Safeway, Longs drugs, ABC, novelties).

If you are going with little kids bring water shoes. I was taking small and big pieces of fresh broken glass -- not sea glass-- out of the sand and water. There are homeless people. We went early in the morning and a person was swimming close to us and he pooped in the water. A huge human turd floated by us and it was disgusting. It's sad because the water was clear and the coral made it such a fun place for the kids but that incident made it so gross, I had to shower immediately. But because the area was so shallow we stayed anyways.... The shaded area smells like pee. So not sure how clean it is.

The steep hike seemed easier but longer and steeper. The pools were teeming with fish and crabs, high tide was about and hour off. Looked around and dove into the deeper of the pools, the water was cool and the salt seemed filtered away. We hung out until the waves started cresting the outer walls. Very beautiful, please be respectful if you go; leave it a better, cleaner place than when you arrived.

We also had our kids with us so that was a game changer. Parking was easy at the trailhead and there weren't a lot of people here. There is a sign at the beginning honoring a man who died here and asking people not to go in the pools. It is about a 5 minute walk to the cliff where you can first see the pools. If you choose to walk down, it is probably another 10 minutes and the terrain isn't too terrible. The pools are indeed right on the ocean, with water from the ocean splashing into them and then pulling back out. It did not too violent when we were there and there were about 10 people swimming and diving into them, so they must be pretty deep. We stood and watched and took in the view for about 15 minutes and then went on our way.

To reach the beach, you drive north on highway 30 to the Mile 32 marker at a slight curve where two paved pull off areas will be on the left in front of chain link fencing. There is enough parking for 15-20 cars. Park here then walk north to the end of chain link fence and green metal rails with concrete steps will lead you down to the beach. The rails are hidden behind high shrubs.
