La Pointe du Hoc is a 110 ft (35 meters) cliff that juts out into the sea overlooking the English Channel on the northwestern coast of the Normandy region in the Calvados department of France. Trying to imagine the soldiers who scaled these cliffs seems unthinkable! In World War II, on the morning of June 6th, Pointe du Hoc was one of the most daring operations of the Allied landings. This was a crucial German stronghold and you can explore the remnants of German bunkers, machine gun posts, and bomb craters that are now filled with wild flowers and bright green grass. Suffice it to say that this incredibly beautiful scenery is a very poignant testament to the courage and determination of those who fought here in battle. Managed by the American administration, like the nearby American cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer, it is free to visit with ample parking. As of March 2026, they are currently doing construction around the parking. NO DOGS ALLOWED. Hubby and I wanted to visit Pointe du Hoc because it is a significant World War II site featuring dramatic cliffs and historic remnants. We arrived with a tour group and were able to see the amazing 100 ft cliff that the soldiers had to scale and bunkers that are still standing. To climb the cliff Rangers used ropes, grappling hooks, and ladders to ascend the cliffs under fire from German forces above. To see this in person puts what these soldiers went through in perspective. This again is another amazing historic site, and a must see read more

Pointe du Hoc is the site where the Army's 2nd Ranger Batallion famously scaled 100' cliffs on D-Day morning with German machine gun fire raining down on them. Their goal was to knock out six 155 mm guns that were presumed to be positioned atop the plateau. Big bomb craters now grown over with grass and the ruins of German bunkers still litter the plateau. A Ranger monument marks the site and both Presidents Reagan and Biden gave D-Day commemoration speeches at this very spot. read more

Having just visited Colleville-sur-Mer during the 80th anniversary celebration we decided to visit the day of with Pointe-du-Hoc. Extremely interesting and impressive. Whereas museums provide context, seeing a landscape virtually untouched by the last 80 years with bunkers and craters, next to the cliffs is something else altogether. This was the site of the famous battleground where American troops overtook German forces. According to Wikipedia, "Pointe du Hoc is a 100 ft (30 m) cliff overlooking the English Channel on the coast of Normandy in northern France. During World War II it was the highest point between Utah Beach to the west and Omaha Beach to the east. The German army fortified the area with concrete casements and gun pits. On D-Day (6 June 1944) the United States Army Ranger Assault Group assaulted and captured Pointe du Hoc after scaling the cliffs." I came here on a tour with a group of 3 people total. This is the place during World War II where the United States Army Ranger assault group overtook German forces On June 6, 1944. There is A Monument at the edge of the Cliff in memory of the fallen soldiers And there are plaques that explain all the events that went on. There are craters in the ground from Explosions and the aftermath of Battle. The remains of Bunkers and gun Pits Are scattered around and you can still walk into some of the bunkers and see what the German soldiers themselves must have seen while they were in there. Otherwise it is quite a serene countryside but I recommend you wear light jacket in case of rain or wind since it is right on the coast. read more

Great spot and museum in Normandy. We came during Thanksgiving week and the place was empty. We got there before the museum opened so just walked around first. The craters from the bombs/shells are still there! Highly recommend this as well as the Normandy American Cemetery for your visit to Normandy to learn about the D-Day Invasion. read more

Wow, what an incredibly preserved site! The site still has bunkers that you can walk into. The land is covered in crater holes. It's really quite insane standing at Pointe du Hoc and trying to comprehend what the Rangers had to fight against. This area is absolutely breathtaking and worth taking about an hour to walk around and look at the monuments. read more

Lots of abandoned Nazi bunkers intact and blown apart. Tons of bomb craters everywhere. Concrete bunkers are wearing away because of the weather and plants are trying to overtake the bomb craters, so get here while you can. You can get an idea of how steep the climb must have been for the Rangers to get up here. read more

A worthwhile stop with a free small museum with a hard hitting film of survivors talking about the day they scaled the cliffs and pushed forward to take out the guns before D Day. There's a walk out on to the cliffs, the ground pitted with impact craters and a view to the now peaceful cliffs overlooking the ocean. A very moving experience. read more
