Lebanese food in an unassuming, mosaic-covered rustic restaurant? Yes, please.
The new kid on the block of Oxford's Cowley road, Pomegranate had received a thumbs-up from several of my friends and had piqued the interest of those who hadn't yet found the time in their Michaelmas to try it. A similar but notably different menu from the new Greek restaurant a few doors down, I found the menu versatile with plenty for vegetarians and meat lovers alike. I couldn't decide on a main (standard), so after several minutes of perusing, decided to go for the meat mezze platter. (When in doubt in Middle Easter/Med cafes, you can't go wrong with a bit of everything).
Definitely didn't regret my decision as there was plenty of food which included everything from the standard falafel and hummus to a refreshingly new broad bean salad. There was baba ganoush and salad as well as dolmas (stuffed grape leaves). I am a (self-proclaimed) dolma connoisseur as all of our family friends are Armenian/Azerbajan in origin and can guarantee that it was perfectly spiced and lemony. I was not crazy about the chicken wings though my boyfriend thought they were great. Nor was I in love with the tiny sausages. However, the spiced potatos and the overall fresh flavors won me over. Really attentive and quick staff as well. The decor is simple and minimal with a nice fire place with dried fruits (pomegranate) strewn across. Also, the bill comes in a closed decorative wooden box which was the exact same one my boyfriend brought back from Israel as my souvenir. Definitely a sign we will be coming back.
We left happy and full of hummus, which is what one should always be. read more
