The decision often feels abrupt or unmeasured but it rarely is. All I can say is that I'll know it when I see it and La Belle Hortense was a perfect example. We'd been walking for over an hour when I suddenly crossed the street in front of 3 other cafes and declared "This is it. Let's have a drink". I mean, who wouldn't stop for a tiny storefront doing double-duty as a wine bar cum bookstore? Seats at the small bar were mere inches away from the few tables behind my stool. A play list from a streaming service was visible, amplifying music that could be easily talked above. A tiny passage led to an intimate back room, windowless, with filled bookshelves and several more tables for drinks and diners. It wasn't mealtime for me so I enjoyed only wine at the bar and buying a few postcards in-house before leaving. As such, I didn't sample the food menu sourced from other restaurants on the street. It amused me though, to sit at the bar and watch plates being ferried back and forth across the street to tables inside. Charming and eclectic, La Belle Hortense isn't anything to go out of your way for but if you find yourself nearby it' might be time to stop for a drink.

We had the house wine, a ham sandwich, the tarama and chicken liver salad when we went and everything was delicious. The tarama was unreal, it was whipped in a way I have never had tarama before and I and my husband come from Greek families. The chicken salad was perfect as well and the chicken liver was grilled and seasoned to perfection. My husband and I went here while they had the Peter Turnley exhibit happening and his photos added even more ambience to the place if that is even possible. We stayed here until the back of the restaurant cleared out and honestly I would have been happy to spend all night here. It was a truly magical place that I will be sure to visit every time I go to Paris.

Paris definitely does not have a craft beer culture. This is a real shame because there are many wonderful beers produced in France. But you would be hard pressed to find 95% of them in bars in Paris, even bars known for having good beer. One of your only options is going to Cave a Bulles and buying individual bottles of French beer. If Simon is not busy, you can easily chat with him for an hour about beer. He will help you choose a good variety of beers to bring home, ones that you are probably not going to find in the US. His English is excellent. And If you really want to make a friend, bring him a rare beer from the US (or elsewhere).

I showed up 15-20 minutes before closing, and I wish I had gone in sooner. Simon loves what he does and it's evident. My 2 biggest regrets were not bringing him a bottle from back home and not having a checked bag to bring the loads of Cantillon (that I wish I had bought) back to where I was staying in Nice. La Cave a Bulles will certainly be a staple for me whenever I visit Paris.

There must be over 500 different beers clearly labeled with country of origin and type of beer to make finding what you're looking for a little easier. The man who runs the shop is obviously quite knowledgeable and happy to share his expertise. You can also find the perfect glass to go with your beer or pick up a mini-keg for your next soirée. I only gave the place four stars because I find some of the prices a bit outrageous. Expect to pay between 2€ and 4€ per bottle.

Picked up some wonderful wines last week for a dinner with friends and they loved the choices, particularly the family (Fleury) champagne which is in a region closer to Paris than the traditional northern champagnes we are used to.
