It was only a Movado, not even something more expensive.. what is the point of robbing a paying customer? Just a regular person, holding down a regular paying job, looking to purchase a regular looking nameplate necklace while in NY, and I stumbled upon Popular Jewelry after eating regular Chinese dishes while in Chinatown! Lol. That's the truth, yo! After I discovered that Canal Street Market was closed on the July 4th holiday, I was headed toward the subway station on Canal Street when I looked up and saw Popular Jewelry. They had a ton of gold on display in their windows, with articles and photos taped on the door. Not your typical jeweler that you'd see in a mall. Hmm, must be out of my league, but let's check it out anyway! The shop probably had about 5 customers at the counter when we were warmly greeted by Jenny. I told her what I was looking for, so she pulled out a tray of nameplate samples. Single layer, double layer, raised, with bling, etc. Like I said in the beginning, I was just looking for something regular. So, Jenny then showed be a single layer script nameplate in 14k, and informed me of the cost. The price was right and the estimated completion date (next day) worked out well since I would be leaving the following day. As I was filling out the paperwork, I was approached by another woman. She asked how we were doing and wanted to know how we found out about her jewelry shop. I told her I was just passing by. Then I jokingly said, do you have a lot of famous celebrity customers? She then pointed to her wall of photos...Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, Macklemore, Jude Law, and the photos go on and on and on. Then humbly mentioned she was popular on YouTube! The owner of the shop, Eva Sam, famously known as A$AP Eva, treated us like family. I called the next day to check on the status of my necklace. I had to provide them with the Receipt # and name. This was the day right after Michael Jackson died and since Z's a DJ - took it kind of hard and for some reason because he died, Z wanted some hoops. Came here a few months ago and forgot to leave a rating! Definitely a bit small inside, but lots of variety on display and even more in the back. The people working were friendly and amenable to discuss price, so I felt I got a fair deal. It's a good idea to check the website to get a rough idea of what the initial asking price might be. I came looking for one specific piece, but they showed me other things as well and offered to let me try them on - it was a real "VIP" feeling, haha :) I turned them down because didn't want to waste their time, as my budget was up, and luckily they weren't pushy at all. Definitely come with a limit in mind - they're good!! As for the jewelry itself, the lovely 24k gold pendant I got has held up perfectly after 6+ months of 24/7 wear. The design has remained sharp, including the details, and there is no discoloration, rusting, warping, or scratches (that I can see, at least with the naked eye). With a little polish to make it shiny, it would probably look just like it did the day I got it. My boyfriend got me this heart-shaped ring from this place. I didnt really like this place from the start because I had a sketchy feeling about the staff and jewelry but since my boyfriend seemed excited, i decided to give them a chance. Within a month or two of having this ring, 3 diamonds fell off, in 3 different places. After the 2nd time, i was told that it would cost $20 to replace the diamond and i said this is not my fault, why am i paying for a diamond that fell off so easily? It is the setter's fault for not setting the diamonds correctly. The lady proceeded to tell me WITH ATTITUDE, "its not sturdy due to the shape of the ring and its not our fault either". I moved from New York to Virginia over 20 years ago, but every time I come home to visit friends and family, I come in and purchase something. Thley've always been willing to negotiate on price. More recently, I chose to ask for custom-made jewelry. First, I had diamond studs made for me. 1.5 karat total weight. I was able to specify the quality of the diamonds. Beautiful work. My next purchase was a custom-made name plate with both my name and my husband's name. My husband had recently passed away, and I had a gold tear drop filled with his ashes. I also had my own chain. They created the name, added the teardrop, and used my own chain. I wear this every day. I saw a pair of diamond hoop earrings that I loved in Virginia. but they were lab created diamonds. I asked them to recreate these earrings with high-quality diamonds. The entire process was done by text messages with Kevin. First, they drew a picture of the earrings. We decided on the size of the hoop , the quality of the diamonds, and the closing clasp. I was involved every step of the way without ever stepping in the store. The results were perfection! Seven diamonds per hoop excellent quality totaling 2.5 karats. The pricing of all of my custom-made jewelry was fair. The pictures I am attaching do not do justice to the perfection of the diamonds. This is my jeweler for life! They have beautiful golden and diamonds in stock. UPDATE: So I had them fix the ring and it looks amazing. Why they didn't do it like this in the first place, I don't know. Final consensus about this place is that quality of work is hit or miss, and customer service is good. Prices are a bit higher than average, so make sure what you get is exactly what you want. ORIGINAL: I'm still trying to see how I feel about this place. I ordered two signet rings and a pendant for myself and my husband, and they all have an engraving with a tiny diamond on each. Only problem is that when my assistant went to pick them up the engravings were filled in black (we provided pictures for style and it clearly isn't black) and the diamonds and engravings are not lined up. I understand there is a bit of room for error because it's difficult to make something perfectly lined up but the diamonds were not centered at all and were completely off to one side. If I'm paying money for these things shouldn't I be getting good quality work? I requested that they redo my husband's ring because that one was the most obvious, so I will revise this review once I pick it up next week. Service is excellent- Eva even got on the phone with me and explained what happened, but didn't offer to redo the ring (I had to insist on that). The hype for this place is real on Instagram, but I can definitely see a difference in care between "regular" paying clients' pieces and "famous" clients' jewelry. I used to come here quite often with friends even before they became popular 10 years ago. It was until recently I've had the worst experience of my life. I had just purchased 3 rings including a $400 eternity band from the store and came in the next day to pick up the other 2 rings I had resized. The woman who was working with me showing me other rings was a mess. I was asking her about a custom piece. She asked me to take off my ring (the $400 band) to show Eva the size of diamonds I wanted for my custom piece and that was the last time I saw that ring. I don't know if she lost it or stole it but it was gone. $400 spent lost in less than 24 hours. It was the most horrible experience and Eva the owner did nothing to make up for the unorganized actions of her seller. We even looked at the cameras and it showed the seller taking it and never giving it back. The seller claimed that she never touched my ring which was a complete lie. Days after I ran into the seller who lost/stole my ring at another Chinatown jewelry shop only to find out she was fired. Eva is a fraud and I will never give this fraudulent anymore business from now on. There are multiple lengths for the necklaces in mm, but Cathy was very meticulous allowing us to try on the necklaces several times before purchase. I am allergic to gold so she showed me some sterling silver pieces that were really pretty. We needed to have our bracelets sized because our wrists were small so Cathy told us to come back in 2 hours. These women are CROOKS. I grew up in this neighborhood and have shopped at many of the Jewelry stores along Canal and Bowery. My go to is New Top Jewelry but their jeweler wasn't in this day and I needed a few pieces fixed. I found Popular Jewelry in my search and they were one of the only places that had a jeweler in early enough seeing as I was leaving the city and needed it done at a certain time. I brought several items in one being a gold chain that was bought in Hong Kong for the child I take care of. His sister has an identical chain and pendant and was waiting in the car while I had the pieces fixed. When I got the chain back I could tell there was something wrong. First of all the clasp was still broken and the chain seemed different. When I compared it to the identical chain of his sister it was at least an inch and a half longer and the links were slightly different. I brought both chains in to show the woman who helped me and to have her weigh them both. Not to my surprise the chain they had given me back weighed less then the original chain. The owner then got involved and screamed at us telling us that she was FAMOUS and didn't need our business. She told us that even if the necklaces had been switched why wouldn't we want the one they gave us because it was longer? When we asked to speak with the person who had fixed the necklace she would not reveal who it was and continued to be nasty. We ended up leaving and that was the end of it. I have never had such a bad experience, there are MANY great places to shop for jewelry in the area but Popular Jewelry is a scam. Their prices are also much higher than most places. Something inside me said, "You could be Jenny from the block, you know that lady had gold name jewelry." I searched online for places that sell name jewelry but I didn't want to order anything online, and not be happy with it. Thus I ended up at Popular Jewelry on my way to Vapeasy. I Coyly walked up to the door where I pressed a buzzer in order to get in, what I saw was miles of gold in cases of course- but no name jewelry. At first no one came to help me, but then a little petite Asian lady who I later found out was named Lily came to help. I asked her about name rings, she then pulled out a shelf of gold name rings in different styles, and designs. I chose a wrap around name ring, with a star at the bottom of my name. I told her my ring size, gave her my debit card, my ID, and a smile. But before leaving of course she had to pull out the name bracelets, necklaces, and earrings (Thankfully my ears are stretched) I then negotiated a price with Lily, and another woman working at the counter for a name plate including the chain. A week later they called, telling me my ring was ready for pick up, I just picked it up today- I am pleased with my ring. It's not a thin piece of gold with my name scribbled across it the band is thick, and the inside is stamped with 14K in the middle. I love that they haggle with the prices with you, and everyone there seems like they love what they do- which is selling you some pretty shiny stuff, and going home bling blangin'!
