Visited Porkies on inWednesday night. I had the two meat platter - pulled pork and "killer ribs" and Rick had a half slab of baby back ribs. The pulled pork was excellent - smoky flavor permeated the meat. My portion had some burnt ends along with the tender shreds. The "killer ribs" are meaty with a dry rub. Rick's baby back ribs were moist and flavorful. He opted for Cole Slaw and baked beans for his sides. Cole slaw was fresh, crisp and with a vinegary dressing. Best barbecue place in deland. We got a couple turkey sandwiches, pulled chicken sandwiches, dirty taters, sweet potato casserole, and Q salad. It was amazing. The meat in the turkey sandwiches was tender and juicy, the slices were about 1/2" thick, and it was a lot of meat on each sandwich. Pulled chicken sandwich and Q salad were great as well. The dirty taters will be a side we will order from now on, and the sweet potato casserole was so good, it was like dessert. These are certain states we all know as BBQ States, FL ain't one and DeLand, FL isn't even the twinkling of a thought UNTIL you meet Porkies Between my partner and I, we had the ribs, sausage, brisket, chicken, chopped pork, green beans, baked beans, dirty potatoes, French fries, garlic bread and cornbread. Let's cover em one by one --- Sausage perfectly smoked, the skin still had a nice snap Ribs fell right off the bone, wonderfully tender Chicken (if you read any of my other reviews you'll find I'm a self proclaimed chicken snob cause restaurants always kill it) skin wasn't too fatty, smoke and spice went all the way through the meat, could see the moisture still totally intact *chef's kiss* Chunked pork moist, Smokey, melts in mouth Brisket tender, good bark, dances on the tongue Baked beans brown sugar molasses base but now overly sweet, a lil bland (personally believe this is done on purpose) till you add and stir in the BBQ sauce of choice Green beans true Southern style with mix of pork and bacon French fries, great crispy outer and soft center I just needed to add a lil more salt Dirty Potatoes not cooked to death, still had a lil snap in the skin, the smoke level, the spices ....I will be gathering all my chefy skills to attempt a recreation at home Garlic bread OMG amazing, so much garlic, absolute perfection IMHO Cornbread, never had anything like this, it was like a corn cupcake, soft, moist, buttery and an hour later still on my tongue Sweet tea, true Southern style and near diabetes causing, wanted to steal the whole container We wished we had room for dessert but my 2 meat and my partners 3 meat had us each bringing home leftovers. Took my food. Which was a to go order. To another table. Then let the people at the table go through the food. Then was told it's not their food. Then she tried to hand it to me. I told her very politely she could keep it. And walked out the door. She never offered me my money back or to make new food. She seemed more upset because I wouldn't accept the food that she let somebody else go through. read more

My go-to in Deland for BBQ. Ribs are always hot and tasty. Sides have been as tasty.

Great little BBQ place with lots of atmosphere. Order at the window and they bring it out. Server was kind and friendly. The garlic bread and corn muffins are delicious. The ribs were also very good. The Mac and cheese was not warm and a bit too creamy. The dirty potatoes were different, I couldn't decide if I loved them or didn't like them. Not the old Porkies' BBQ. The pulled pork and the taters were served lukewarm at best. Other than delivering the food to your table, the staff did not do much...oh wait! Excellently surprised and disappointed in myself for not visiting sooner. Was my mistake for thinking they were somehow related to Porkie's in Apopka but I was wrong. Firstly, I really enjoyed the brisket sandwich. Wasn't as smoked as I would have liked but was of prodigious portion and deliciously tender. All the sauces are fantastic. I Loved them all and that's not usually the case. Somebody's definitely on my flavor wavelength there Solid sides. Those dirty taters and sweet mashed were yummnnn. As was the sweet tea. Porkies is Alabama style BBQ, and it's by far the best spot in DeLand. The sole reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is their sauces are some of the worst I've ever had. I've tried to like them on multiple visits. The 'cue is great and it deserves better sauce!!! read more

This is our 2nd time visiting here because we live in Orlando & it's kind of a hike to get to Deland. BUT.... once you get there you find it's certainly worth the drive. Yeah, there are a lot of other choices for dining, but this is a super place for BBQ! If you are familiar with the old Porkies that was in Apopka & that closed down awhile back, well this place is kinda sorta similar. YUMMY!!! I got their Yaeger salad with chicken which is their Smokehouse salad that has a delicious mustard-based vinaigrette dressing & chopped green olives & tomatoes for about $8.50 I think. My husband got a 2 Meat special w/two sides for $17.95. Reasonable prices for very decent portions too! He chose sliced pork & ribs with BBQ beans & fries & garlic toast. We also decided to share an "appetizer" of a small side of Brunswich Stew & a small side of Dirty Taters. Both of these were super tasty, and we were "fighting" over who was gonna get the last spoonful of each! Heeheehee As for the review of our meals..... OUTSTANDING!! The chicken on my salad was just plain, moist chicken breast, but it was wonderful with my salad. It was quite sizeable & I could even pull some of the chicken to the side on my plate & mixed it with a mix of their housemade Sweet BBQ sauce & their housemade Carolina Red which is kinda sweet with a teensy bit of heat. I couldn't even finish all of my huge salad. Since we came for lunch I just had it for dinner. My husband shared a bite of his juicy large ribs. sizeable portion of sliced pork, french fries, & BBQ beans, & Garlic toast so I can agree with him that everything was outstanding. I called my mom to get her a take-out today since she lives close-by. She got the special of Ribs & pulled pork with the Summer Slaw & BBQ beans. The Summer Slaw has a vinegar base & is a teensy bit sweet. Very tasty & she says when she drops by here these are her 2 favorite sides. Pepsi products. Fresh unsweet & sweet teas. I was able to mix up an Arnold Palmer since they had Tropicana Lemonade as a choice. Good looking desserts, but we were way too stuffed today. And another point.... it seems that a lot of BBQ joints tend to put way too much heat in their side items for just no good reason. I was so happy to be able to simply taste the sides. Everything was good, southern BBQ, and not jalapeno added to everything (including the cornbread for some reason). BBQ places are everywhere these days but Porkies was the 1st I visited after moving from SC to FL last August. I am absolutely wild for their ribs. And as for ambiance, well the signage above the door is insanely hilarious as it reads: "You can smell our butts a mile away." Clever! I love their Dirty Taters also. Overall, I would have to say it's average at best. Had the pulled pork dinner. Meat was cold and not much flavor. Had the beans which were ok but again not much flavor or smokiness. Went to Porkies in Deland for lunch today. First time there. I ordered a Jumbo Brisket sandwich, Baked Beans and Collard Greens. The brisket was dry over cooked and tasteless. I seemed to me it was cooked in a crock pot to long. The beans were canned beans and the collards were also tasteless. Not a hint of smokiness in anything. Just not good. Seconds? Yes please!! I have to say that Porkies is some of the best BBQ I have had since moving to Florida. After looking for a place to eat after going to Blue Springs State Park I decided to give Porkies a try, all the reviews I read were positive so why not! My husband, mom and I chose the meal for 4 that included a pound each of ribs and pulled pork as well as half a chicken, 4 pieces of garlic bread and 4 sides of our choice. We chose baked beans, coleslaw, Mac & cheese and dirty potatoes (which I upgraded to a jumbo size). Everything was amazing especially the dirty potatoes (I could have eaten nothing but those and been happy!) the staff was super friendly and the dining area clean. Decor would be what is expected in a BBQ restaurant, pigs, favorite college and sports teams and a bit rustic. There were plenty of tables inside they also have an outside dining area that looked like it could use a bit of updating. All and all I would recommend making the drive to Deland to give them a try read more

Yes! Definitely a must. Stopped here for lunch, this place is located down the street from Stetson University. I had the chopped pork and Liza tried the ribs. We both had the same sides Dirty Tatters and Mac and cheese with garlic bread,portions were fair and food was delicious. Staff was great and the location was a bit dated but clean and comfortable. I visited on a Sunday and was blown away by the food and the warm, cheerful atmosphere created by the staff. I was so inspired that I wrote and produced a song for them, which they enjoyed. Dan, the cook, mentioned that the owner would love it and told me to let the owner know that I was promised a free meal. I never asked for this free meal; it was offered. However, when I returned today to claim the meal, one of the owners rudely refused to honor the offer. I paid for my meal, but the owner's attitude was so off-putting that I requested a refund before the food arrived and left. No matter how great the food might be, the unprofessionalism of ownership makes it impossible for me to recommend this restaurant to anyone. read more

I ordered take out for a white meat 1/2 chicken platter. I opted for the Dirty Taters and Mac & Cheese with garlic toast. Wow! I got a LOT of food. Two huge chicken breasts with 3 sides of sweet bbq sauce. It was so good and I was able to save the other breast and 1/2 my mac & cheese for later.
