It feels pretty safe even during the evening time (the only time you can walk in the summer heat down here) since lots of people are on the trail. Of note it doesn't actually make a full loop but more of a semicircle so you'll have to walk back the same direction. The library itself is decent though I wish they had a bigger selection! I feel like a lot of popular books can be checked out or missing. The librarians are helpful and I was able to find some great gems:)

There is a small one in Port Isabel and its hours are limited. That said, the nearest big city is Brownsville, the large and spread out port of entry to the U.S. from Matamoros, Mexico. Brownsville seems to have somewhat of a downtown there, albeit not a very nice one. The library is further north from this area, on quieter and more spacious streets as one heads north toward the big shopping areas. There is a very large parking lot behind the library. I had to go into the city's main library having to do some things beyond the capability of a laptop, accessing software and features probably on a library's computers. I was able to do so. The computer room is a large rectangular one with computers at the perimeter and a long island, also with computers on both sides, in the middle. A person is assigned to the tech desk and they helped me with what I needed to do. At the end, a librarian who appeared to be in a management role up front helped me with some additional formatting and checking and got the needed information to me. I was initially greeted by circulation desk personnel who told me where I could find things and, thankfully, not where I could go. (I'm trying to be humorous.) After speaking with the employee in circulation, there was a small food vending counter and I bought a sandwich and something to drink, for which there are adjacent tables. There are many books in their extensive stacks as well as comfortable chairs interspersed throughout the library for patrons who might want to browse through books and other reading material. They have study rooms in addition to a larger quiet room. I used the latter and the atmosphere was appropriately quiet. The city's main library befits the size of Brownsville and most likely fills most of the needs of its catchment area. I encountered an engaged level of patron service on my lengthy afternoon visit to the library. In addition to helping you with their resources, they were also a good source of information about the general area.

I liked coming here a lot with my daughter. The library seems to have updated amenities as well which I really appreciate.

The "Old Morgue" of Fort Brown was built about 150 years ago. This lab was one of the first places…read moreyellow fever was studied via autopsy. It was here, Dr Gorgas discovered treatment and prevention of Yellow Fever. The tree in front of the morgue was said to be used to hang criminals before conveniently depositing the bodies at the morgue. An interesting side note: The Old Morgue building is infamous for being haunted and many reports of apparitions have accumulated over its history. Ghost hunters have been known for frequenting this building and have observed anomalies and carried out studies of oddities present around said building.

I was last in the RGV just a few years ago, and spent a lot of time in various towns here because it's one of my fave parts of the whole USA, and also one of the most heavily-Mexican-influenced areas. This is a beautiful town, with plenty of restaurants, shops and amenities. It's underrated and a little off-the-beaten-path. It doesn't seem to be much of a tourist town. I have a friend that lives in San Benito so I stayed with him for a few days. It's the hometown of someone very close to me, so there was already a sentimental attachment. I wouldn't say it's one of my fave towns in Texas, but I definitely look forward to being there again. One of the most special people on earth (and the sexiest, for that matter) was born in this city. A lot of other Texan cities already have Yelp listings and reviews, but San Benito does not. Perhaps because it's named after Benito Mussolini. Typical older Italian guy. Loved young girls, pizza, and fascism. It's very close to Harlingen, by the way, which is the city in the middle of the RGV, halfway between the western end of McAllen and the East end of Brownsville-South Padre Island. It's a dusty leafy warm little border town that is more Spanish-speaking than English-speaking, and has some great Tex Mex food as well as Mexican as well. And most importantly, an uber hottie was born there. Not Mussolini... someone way hotter. And this is review #1977, for a good reason.

I usually cross with no problems but I've done it thousands of times. For me these trips are always bitter sweet. I'm either leaving loved ones behind, getting a bit of freedom, experiencing something new or wishing the vacation never ends. You should once in your lifetime take a trip to Mexico even if it's just for street tacos. Who cares you don't know what kind of meat they are. They taste like chicken! Walk the bride, shop the stores on both sides. Just don't purchase merchandise in matamoros unless it's tequila. Do your shopping in Brownsville. They're comin' across the border by the thousands everyday Lookin' for a better life in the good ol' U.S.A. Even for myself, being a local, I was surprised to find some hidden jewels by visiting the Brownsville Convention & Visitors Bureau. With the Help of Felix Espinoza, one of the associates behind the desk... this man has a passion for his job, the kind of passion that's rare to find in today's quick paced world. He knows the in's and out's of the entire Rio Grande Valley better than anyone we've known. Whatever your likings, this gentleman has a destination for you to visit. You've already been there? Not a problem, he'll point you into the right direction and give you some spots that you didn't even know where there! This gentleman is a true ambassador of our beloved home and rich culture. With service this good I recommend even our locals to drop by and see what next adventure awaits you. In addition to those already awesome service, the staff is available to assist groups and planners with organizing meetings and conventions in Brownsville.

As you drive up and down Padre Blvd., you will know that this is the U.S. Post Office for the town…read more... and the island. It has that official but sort of time stamped '70s or '80s Sunbelt government office building look. The difference is that it sits up high off the ground, possibly to put USPS vehicle parking under it and maybe even because it can rain hard here. With its being off the ground, the maze of ramps to make it accessible is one of the most noticeable things about this place. Once inside, the actual post office is small. The staff is accustomed to working at a USPS location that sees a lot of tourists with many different needs, so they appear to be mellow and are fairly helpful. The zone for the post office boxes is a lot larger than the post office lobby itself, which is actually small. I went here to mail four postcards that I got for a very good price. I still send them, though a lot less than before. There isn't much of a market for postcards anymore. The big beachwear and novelty stores on the island don't sell them and I actually stumbled onto them at a store in Port Isabel. Two of the postcards traveled domestically and two of them traveled to Italy. The two sent within the U.S. got to their recipients fairly quickly. Those going to Italy must have been on a "milk train." You already know which side is at fault. The parking lot in front of this USPS branch is large. Also, befitting the smaller year-round population numbers of SPI, this branch has slightly shorter hours from Monday through Friday - until 4:30 p.m. - and a very short window of hours on Saturday mornings.
