Although Harry Jerome is in the middle of a huge renovation, it still has the same small town, North Vancouver feel. It will be amazing when it is all finished! The only issue right now is the lack of available parking. There used to be lots of free parking, but now it is a huge construction site. Parking and traffic are awful everywhere along Lonsdale Ave., so you must get creative. It would be helpful to have more handicapped parking spots, but we will have to figure that out.

Most of the time, they are set up for lanes, but at public swim times, the waterslide and diving boards are opened up. There is also a nice big hot tub to relax in - although I've always been horrified by the many "No shaving" signs that dot the area. No running, no horseplay, but shaving? Who exactly is shaving in the hot tub? Some things are best left a mystery. I also like the authentic wooden sauna here, although it is kind of small. The best time to go is during one of the dollar swim or dollar skate sessions, although as you might expect, these are the busy times. But not too too busy, and probably the best little fitness deal in the city. (Harry Jerome is just near the top of the Upper Levels highway in North Van, so rather close, actually, for you brave bridge crossers.)

Climbing shoes, harness, and grigri rental is included in the lesson price. The instruction given was clear, and helpful. They also tested me by purposely doing things wrong (grigri on the wrong side, the rope is too long, etc), and asked me to verify that everything is good to go. I got the chance to belay the other lesson taker, and the instructor would pointed out what habit I need to fix. After the lesson, I got a piece of paper to review what I learned today. I also got a bit of free time to climb on my own. 7 days trial is included in lesson so that you can climb and practice more. The oval climbing gym offers bouldering (small section), lead, and speed climbing. Pretty solid climbing gym in my opinion!

If you don't live in the area, it's very close to the Main Street skytrain station (about a 2 min walk). Pros: - 2 areas specifically for deadlifting - 1 barbell pad (I need this for barbell hip thrust) - beautiful view of False Creek / Science World - new cable machines - there's an assisted pullup machine - spacious stretching area - they have large lockers (the long ones) - there's an ab wheel Cons: - no smith machine (!!!! What???) - no hip abduction machine - only 4 benches. Bonsor is similar in size and has at least 6 - it's a small gym - some asshole didn't put back the weights in one of the deadlifting area (325lbs). No f-in way am I reracking that. - the only extra barbells are the 2 in the deadlifting area. The other 2 are in the squat rack. At Bonsor, they have 6+ extra barbells that's in addition to the ones in the squat racks and bench press. Won't be going here again, not really worth the price of admission.

The gym is decent but the weight section seems jam packed full of equipment, which makes it difficult to move around and such when it's busy. The staff and trainers were all just kind of hanging out talking to each other but still helpful (A trainer came to help me when he noticed me staring at a machine with a confused look on my face and he didn't even make me feel stupid because I didn't know how to use it!) Standard sign up sheets for cardio machines but no one seems to really take notice, it was basically just grab whatever s available. The pool is huge and great. Loved the steam room and sauna, as they are both clean and spacious. Changing rooms are very large. The pool area is pretty empty if you go late morning/ early afternoon but the gym seems to always be busy. The restaurant boasts "fresh homemade snacks" on their website but I've only ever seen them serving hot dogs, hamburgers and sometimes those prepackaged sandwiches.

From the outside, you'd think there would be a lot of rinks or gym but the place only has two…read morerinks. One is floor hockey and other is ice rink, although both can be ince or floor hockey. They have a couple of multi-purpose rooms for fitness classes. I was hoping for a gym to work out but there is none. It's good for hockey and some fitness classes. There is a small coffee/sandwich shop and skate sharpening shop. They do have an outdoor patio upstairs to enjoy the sun.

Also gorgeous facility . I learned that it was over 15 years old and that they built it for the Olympics, but it seemed To be pretty new . Upstairs there's a curling lounge with a full bar and happy hour ! The locals are spoiled and don't even know it ! If you are local check this place out or even if you are visiting out of town you can still sign up for classes and they are very affordable! Check this place out and support your local rec center!

I love the idea of a community centre with multiple facilities. Gym, pool, skating rink, PLUS a…read morelibrary and café -- check, check, check. And it's modern? We love new, up-to-date facilities. I've used all their facilities except for the skating rink (so I like to think I'm a fairly reliable source). You can pay drop-in for gym and/or pool for $7.50 (yep, you can use both facilities in the same day if you want). Gym isn't huge but there are still enough machines/benches/treadmills to go around. You could totally do a full workout without waiting your turn (unless it's after 4 on a weekday, aka peak gym hours everywhere). Pool is one of the best in Vancouver, given that it's new and has a lot of features. A good number of swimming lanes, leisure pools, a lazy river, 3 diving boards, a big hot tub, a sauna (that is not so big) and a steam room. Showers are fine as far as public pool showers go (the curtains don't fully shut but still better than UBC's) and you can bring your own lock for the lockers. I love that there's a library because I can head on over post-workout and enter a different kind of calm, zen mindset as I peruse the shelves. Whose idea was it to attach a library to every community centre (and can we get more of that, please!)? There will always be something to gripe about with every community centre (sometimes there are way too many people in one swimming lane and I'm not sure why they don't open up another), but as far as Hillcrest goes, it has a lot to offer. A really great place to hit up all the facilities in one stop, or to bring the kids along for a fun-filled, athletic and/or academic weekend. Also, the staff is GREAT and so kind. Kudos to them!

I just called Edmonds Community Centre to inquire about why I have not received credit for a class…read morewherein my instructor did not show up. I expressed to the lady over the phone that the credit was not added to my account but she said she I needed to wait. However, when I expressed to the lady at the front desk today, November 13, that this credit was supposed to be given 3 weeks ago on October 23, 2023, she rushed to the end the conversation and hung up on me. I understand it was a holiday but maybe don't pick up the phone if you're just going to refuse me service?
